In India, a “Steam gift card” bought from a retailer is usually a prepaid Steam Wallet Code: you receive a code, redeem it on Steam, and the credit goes to your INR wallet. The important exception is Steam’s own Digital Gift Card, which you send through Steam; the recipient accepts it without entering a code, and Steam converts it to their currency. Physical retail cards are being phased out, so for most Indian buyers the choice is between an INR retailer code and a native Steam Digital Gift Card.

Valve’s amounts are not a universal denomination list: the native gift-card values depend on the sender’s Steam store currency, and retailer code denominations are set by individual shops. JioGames’ denominations are from its June 2026 guide; Steam’s India-session values were observed on 29 October 2026.

For Indian retail listings, the terms usually describe two parts of the same product: the “gift card” is what you buy, and the “wallet code” is the unique code you enter. Valve sends both Steam Gift Cards and Wallet Codes to the same redemption page; the separate product is a Digital Gift Card purchased and sent inside Steam.
Valve describes gift cards and wallet codes as gift-certificate-style credit usable for games, software and other items available on Steam. Its Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code page accepts a code in a field labelled “Steam Wallet Code.” In India, a digital listing called a Steam gift card generally results in an emailed or on-screen code—not a gift automatically delivered to another Steam account.

Three products that are easy to confuse
- Physical retail card: A plastic or paper card with a concealed code. The buyer hands over the unused code, and the recipient redeems it on their own Steam account.
- Retail digital code: A shop sells a digital denomination and sends the buyer a code. It works like the physical card once redeemed, but is delivered online. “Digital gift card” in a shop listing does not by itself mean it is Steam’s native gifting feature.
- Steam Digital Gift Card: Purchased on Steam and delivered as a Steam gift notification and email. The recipient accepts the gift; there is no wallet code to type.
For a retail code, funds land in whichever account redeems it. Once redeemed, the balance belongs to that account, not to the person who paid for the code.
Which option should I choose in India?
Choose based on who will receive the credit and how it needs to be delivered. An INR retail code is a straightforward top-up or code-based gift; a native Digital Gift Card is the option designed for sending credit to a Steam friend through Steam.

To top up your own India account
Buy a retail code denominated for an INR Steam Wallet, or pay at Steam checkout using an available payment method on your account. A code can be useful when you want to set a fixed spending amount or avoid using a saved payment method. If you buy a code, redeem it while signed into the account that should keep the money.
To send credit to a Steam friend
Use Steam’s Digital Gift Card if you and the recipient use Steam and the gift flow allows the transaction. Steam says it converts the digital gift into the friend’s currency, which is different from the retail-code currency rule. A retail INR code can also be sent, but only when you know the recipient’s wallet uses INR; the recipient redeems it themselves.
To give someone a physical present
Remaining physical cards may still be available, but they are a dwindling option. Valve says it will not restock retail Steam Gift Cards and expects retailers to be out of stock by the end of 2026. Existing cards remain redeemable, subject to local laws.
To avoid sharing a login
Give the other person an unused code or send a native Steam gift. Never sign into someone else’s account or ask them to give you their password to redeem a gift: the code or Steam delivery is intended to put the credit on the recipient’s account.

Can I use a US Steam gift card in India?
Do not buy a USD retail wallet code for an INR Steam Wallet. Valve’s live help guidance lists limiting redemption to the currency of the Steam Wallet as an anti-scam measure; a retail code should match the wallet currency. The fact that a Steam redeem page describes currency conversion does not make a mismatched retail code a safe purchase.
First check the balance currency shown by your Steam account. If it shows ₹, buy an India/INR retail code. If a seller calls a USD denomination “global,” do not treat that label as proof it will redeem into an INR wallet. A code sold for a dollar wallet may be refused on an Indian account.
The currency-conversion rule for Steam’s native Digital Gift Card is separate: Valve says the digital gift is automatically converted into the friend’s currency. Do not rely on that rule to rescue a mismatched retail Wallet Code.
Does changing Steam’s country fix a code mismatch?
No. Valve explicitly says CD keys and Steam Wallet Codes cannot change your store country. Steam’s Store Country guidance says a country change is available only once every three months and requires a purchase using a payment method from the new country. A wallet code is not a shortcut for changing regional pricing or account location.
To check your account’s country, open Account Details on Steam and review the store country shown there; while travelling, Steam continues to show the home-country store prices. Confirm the wallet currency as well before buying, because country and wallet currency are related checks but not interchangeable fixes.
Where can I buy Steam Wallet Codes in India?
For digital retail codes, Indian options listed in October 2026 include JioGames, RooterShop, UniPin, Amazon.in and Flipkart; Zepto and Blinkit availability depends on location. These are retailer-issued codes, not Steam’s native digital gift delivery. Listings, denominations, stock and seller terms can change, so confirm the region and currency on the specific product page before paying.

JioGames’ Steam product hub lists codes for sale; its June 2026 guide gives denominations of ₹130, ₹325, ₹650, ₹1,300, ₹2,600 and ₹5,200 and describes UPI checkout. IGN India’s 28 October 2026 roundup reported JioGames gift cards ranging from ₹150 to ₹2,500, illustrating why a retailer’s current product page matters more than assuming one fixed denomination ladder. Those figures are merchant listings, not a Valve-published India SKU list.
Amazon.in and Flipkart listings can vary by seller and availability. Before paying, check that the listing is for Steam Wallet credit, states INR/India compatibility, and has a clear way to contact the seller if the code is invalid or already redeemed. For example, IGN India pointed to an Amazon.in listing titled “1000 Steam Wallet Code Only”: Amazon.in product listing. A familiar marketplace name alone does not guarantee that every listing is suitable.
Retailer catalogues differ. Rooter’s India blog lists denominations including ₹150, ₹250, ₹500, ₹975, ₹1,000, ₹1,680, ₹2,500 and ₹5,000, and has advertised discounts; those are Rooter’s offers, not Steam’s official face-value schedule. A merchant catalogue dated 11 October 2026 lists Steam India codes from ₹130 to ₹5,000. Treat any discount as a seller price, not evidence that the code is global or valid for a different wallet currency.
Can I buy a code with UPI?
Some Indian retailers offer UPI checkout. JioGames describes payment through UPI apps including Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm. A separate retailer report says Steam itself has accepted UPI in India through a checkout gateway since July 2025, but Valve’s help pages cited here do not confirm that availability. Check the payment methods shown on your own Steam checkout; direct payment availability can depend on the account and current checkout options.
Buying a retailer code remains an alternative if your Steam checkout does not offer a usable payment method, or if you prefer a prepaid limit. It is not the only route claimed for avoiding a card decline, and card-failure explanations attributed to retailer guides should not be treated as a verified statement of Indian banking or regulatory rules.
How do I redeem a Steam gift card or wallet code?
Sign into the account that should receive the funds, then use Steam’s wallet-code redemption page. Do not use the product-key activation page: it is for game or CD keys, not wallet credit.

- Sign in to the correct Steam account. Check the account name before entering the code; a redeemed balance cannot be moved to another account.
- Open the wallet redemption page. Use Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code. In the Steam client, the documented route is account name → Account Details → Add funds to your Steam Wallet → Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code.
- Enter the code in the Steam Wallet Code field. Carefully distinguish look-alike characters such as 0/O/Q/D, 1/I, B/8 and G/6. Valve does not state an official code character count in the cited help page, so use the code exactly as printed or emailed rather than expecting a particular length.
- Continue and confirm the redemption. Review any currency or error message before completing the process.
- Check the wallet balance beside your profile name. Keep the Steam receipt and retailer confirmation until the credit appears.
On a phone, open the official redemption URL in a browser if a separate in-app path is not visible. Menu labels may differ by client version; the web page is the direct documented route.
If the code is rejected or the balance looks wrong
- Region or currency error: Check that the code currency matches the Steam Wallet currency. An INR account should use an INR code; do not keep retrying a USD code.
- Typing error: Compare ambiguous characters and re-enter the code carefully. Do not share an unredeemed code in a public post or with an unsolicited helper.
- Recently purchased code: Valve says retailer activation can take several hours. Keep the receipt and contact the retailer if the code still is not active after the seller’s stated activation period.
- Physical card issue: Valve asks for a photo of the entire back of the card showing the code and the matching retail receipt. If the code was printed directly on a receipt, Valve says it cannot help with that code; contact the retailer.
- Unexpected balance: Check the Steam email receipt to confirm which account received the funds, then restart the client. Valve’s Wallet FAQ says to contact Steam Support if the balance remains wrong after two hours.
- Wrong activation page: Exit + Add a Game → Activate a Product on Steam and use the wallet redemption page instead. A wallet code and a game key are different products.
What can Steam Wallet funds buy, and can I transfer them?
Steam Wallet funds can pay for games, software, micro-transactions and other items available for purchase on Steam. If the wallet does not cover the full cost, Steam asks for another payment method for the remainder; multiple redeemed codes add to the same account balance.
Wallet credit cannot be moved or gifted to another Steam account. Valve’s support answer is direct: “No, your Steam wallet funds cannot be moved or gifted to another Steam account.” There is also no cash-out: Steam’s digital gift-card terms say, “Card is not redeemable for cash or credit.” For a friend, send an unredeemed retail code or use Steam’s Digital Gift Card flow before the money is redeemed.
Valve permits a refund request for Steam Wallet funds purchased on Steam within 14 days, provided none of those funds have been used. This is a limited refund condition for funds bought on Steam, not a general cash-redemption promise for a retailer code.

Valve says it is ending Steam Gift Card sales at retail stores because scammers use major-brand gift cards as a payment method in fraud schemes. The Steam Support Wallet FAQ says physical cards were introduced to retail in 2012 and the digital programme followed in 2017. Valve will not restock physical retail cards as stock runs down and expects retailers to be out of stock by the end of 2026.
This change concerns physical retail cards. It does not mean Steam Wallet Codes sold digitally by retailers are the same thing as the discontinued plastic cards, nor does it end Steam’s own Digital Gift Card programme. Valve says existing physical cards can still be used on Steam whenever the owner chooses, subject to local laws.

Valve lists measures including retailer and law-enforcement cooperation, scam warnings on cards, currency-matched redemption limits, availability limits and removing cards when abnormal activity appears. For buyers, the practical safeguards are to purchase from a retailer that can address a failed code, redeem promptly on the intended account, and never pay a stranger with Steam codes. Avoid code generators and implausibly discounted offers; an unused code is effectively transferable value until someone redeems it.
Is a Steam gift card the same as a CD key?
No. A Steam Wallet Code adds money to the wallet, while a CD key or product key activates a specific game or software product. Redeem wallet codes from the wallet page; activate eligible product keys through + Add a Game → Activate a Product on Steam. Entering one type on the other page will not convert it into the other product.

Do Steam wallet codes expire?
Valve’s Wallet FAQ says existing physical Steam Gift Cards can still be redeemed whenever the owner chooses, subject to local laws. Check the retailer’s terms for any conditions tied to a digitally sold code, and keep its receipt or order confirmation.
Can I buy a Steam Digital Gift Card with my existing Steam Wallet balance?
No. Valve says existing Steam Wallet funds cannot be used to purchase a Digital Gift Card. Use an available payment method at checkout instead.
What happens if my friend declines a Steam Digital Gift Card?
Steam refunds the original payment method where possible; otherwise, Valve says the funds go back to the sender’s Steam Wallet. The recipient’s wallet receives funds only after the gift is accepted.
Can Steam Wallet funds buy items on the Community Market?
Valve says wallet funds can be used for Community Market purchases if the account is not limited. Account restrictions can therefore affect that use even when the wallet has a balance.
