Steam Deck compatibility badges are Valve’s reviewed assessment of how a game works on Deck—not a universal performance promise. Verified means the game passed Valve’s checks for a ready-to-use experience; Playable means it runs but may need a manual step; Unsupported means Valve found a current functional barrier; and Unknown means the review is not complete. The most important distinction is that Unknown is not a failed test, while Playable does not mean broken.
Use the badge as a starting point, then open the title’s compatibility details. The specific issue—such as a launcher that needs touch input, occasional text entry or a Proton-related blocker—matters more than the color or label alone.

What do the four Steam Deck badges mean?
Each badge answers a different question about Valve’s review status. It does not describe every player’s preferred frame rate, battery target, control layout or future version of the game.
| Badge | Valve’s meaning | What you may need to do | What it does not promise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verified | The reviewed build met Valve’s compatibility checks for a good out-of-the-box experience. | Usually nothing beyond launching and playing with the default setup. | A locked 60 frames per second, a particular battery life or perfect compatibility with every update. |
| Playable | The game functions, but one or more conditions may require intervention. | Use a community layout, open the on-screen keyboard manually, or navigate a launcher with touch. | That every Playable title has the same limitation—or that it is generally poor to play. |
| Unsupported | Valve found a current functional incompatibility on Deck. | There may be no practical local fix if the cause is Proton, anti-cheat, a codec or other middleware. | A permanent ban from the Steam store or proof that a later game update cannot change the result. |
| Unknown | Valve has not completed a compatibility review. | Check current player reports and the game’s details cautiously; the badge itself provides no conclusion. | That the game fails—or that it is safe to assume it works. |
Valve’s consumer descriptions include “The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box” for Verified and “We haven’t checked this game for compatibility yet” for Unknown (Valve’s official explanation).

What does Verified mean on Steam Deck?
Verified means Valve expects the reviewed game to work well with the Deck’s default experience. It passed checks covering controls, display, text entry, launch flow, system support and current default-performance requirements. It is a usability classification, not a promise that every graphics preset or refresh-rate target will perform identically.
What Valve checks
- Input: the default controller configuration must let a player reach and use the game’s content.
- Prompts: on-screen button instructions should correspond to the active input device.
- Text entry: required typing should work appropriately, including access to text-entry tools when needed.
- Display and readability: the resolution and interface should suit Deck’s screen. Valve’s current checklist specifies a minimum character height of 9 pixels at 1280×800 and recommends 12 pixels where possible.
- Launchers: any required launcher should be navigable with Deck controls and readable on the built-in display.
- System and middleware: the game and relevant components must function under Proton when Proton is used.
The current developer checklist also identifies a 30-frames-per-second-at-800p default-performance criterion for a playable default configuration. That is a Valve checklist threshold, not a guarantee that your chosen settings will hold 30 or 60 fps in every scene. See the Steamworks compatibility documentation for the criteria.
Why Verified is not a 60-fps guarantee
Valve’s review asks whether the default configuration is functional and playable, not whether the title sustains 60 fps at all times. A Verified game can still have demanding areas, shader-compilation hitches, different results after an update or options that trade image quality for frame rate. Treat the badge as a baseline for usability; consult current game-specific settings information if a particular performance target matters to you.
What does Playable mean on Steam Deck?
Playable means the game works on Deck but has a documented friction point that may require a small manual action. The category covers several different situations, so the reason attached to the badge is essential.
Common Playable interventions
- A community controller layout may be needed instead of the game’s default mapping.
- You may have to open the on-screen keyboard yourself when a text field appears.
- A launcher may require tapping a button with the touchscreen before the game starts.
- Menus, prompts or text may be usable but less convenient than a fully Deck-optimized interface.
These are not equivalent burdens. A one-time launcher tap is very different from repeatedly remapping controls during play. Open the compatibility details and identify the exact condition Valve recorded before deciding whether it matters for your game, genre and tolerance for setup.
When Playable can still be the right choice
Control-heavy strategy games may be comfortable with a touchpad or docked mouse even when their layout is not ideal. A text-heavy role-playing game may be fine if you rarely type. Conversely, a title that constantly requires an awkward keyboard call-up or launcher interaction can be a poor fit despite technically functioning. The label describes the software’s requirement, while the buying decision depends on how often that requirement appears.

Is Unknown the same as Unsupported?
No. Unknown means Valve has not completed its review; Unsupported means the review found a current functional barrier. Treating the two as synonyms creates opposite errors: rejecting a game that may work, or assuming an unreviewed title is safe.
Unknown also does not mean “nearly Verified.” There is no Valve finding to interpret until a review is published. If you choose to install an Unknown game, use the store’s current details and recent community information as separate evidence rather than converting the missing badge into a prediction.
Why is a game marked Unsupported?
Unsupported indicates that Valve’s review found a functional incompatibility with the current Deck experience. Valve’s developer documentation discusses Proton problems and unsupported middleware; examples can include some anti-cheat systems or media codecs (Steamworks documentation).
What the badge does—and does not—tell you
The label identifies a current barrier, not its permanence. A developer could change the game, middleware or compatibility configuration, and Valve can review the result again. The status is also not a store-purchase ban: an Unsupported listing can still be viewed and purchased on Deck.

Why accessories are not a general fix
A keyboard, mouse or dock can improve controls and text entry, but it cannot repair a Proton incompatibility or make unsupported anti-cheat middleware function. Do not buy an input accessory expecting it to turn an Unsupported game into Verified; first determine whether the blocker is a control inconvenience or a software-system failure.
How do I check why a game is Playable or Unsupported?
Use the current compatibility details for the specific title rather than relying on a badge copied from an old article or screenshot.

- Open the game’s store listing or library entry on your Steam Deck.
- Locate the compatibility badge near the title information.
- Open the detailed compatibility view associated with that badge.
- Read the stated condition, such as text-entry, control-layout, launcher, readability, default-performance or system-support guidance.
- Match the condition to your play pattern: ask whether it occurs once, occasionally or throughout the game, and whether touch, a keyboard or a different layout is acceptable.
- Check again before installing or buying if the listing has changed. Valve says it continues reviewing and retesting after game builds or new information.
The badge changes how Steam presents the game; it does not prevent you from opening its listing or purchasing it on Deck. The detailed reason is the useful decision point.
Can an Unsupported game become Playable or Verified?
Yes, the status can change when a developer updates the game or its middleware and Valve retests it. The reverse can also happen if a new build introduces a compatibility problem. A badge is therefore a current assessment, not a permanent property of the title.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not promise that a particular named game will change status, and do not treat an old badge as evidence of the current build. Do LCD and OLED Steam Deck models have different ratings?
Valve says the same tested Deck rating applies to its LCD and OLED models. There is no separate OLED-only Verified category, so do not substitute a rating from another Steam hardware category for a Deck rating.
The shared badge does not erase hardware differences in display characteristics or battery capacity; it means Valve’s compatibility classification is for the Deck platform rather than a separate badge system for each screen model.
Does a Steam Deck rating prove offline play?
No. Compatibility review and internet requirements are separate questions. Valve says an installed game can be played offline unless that particular game requires internet access, so a Verified badge alone cannot establish offline availability.

Check the game’s own account, server and launcher requirements if you need travel or no-connection play. A title can be easy to control on Deck and still require an online service.
Are demos, DLC and tools covered by the same review?
Standard compatibility review is generally for games, not automatically for every demo, downloadable item, tool or soundtrack in a package. A main game’s badge should not be silently extended to a separate executable.
Look at the individual item’s listing and launch behavior when the content appears separately in your library. This is particularly important for demos or tools that use a different launcher or technical stack.
Can a dock, keyboard or microSD card improve a rating?
Accessories can improve convenience without changing Valve’s compatibility classification. Valve describes its Steam Deck Docking Station as a way to use a keyboard and mouse, while also acknowledging third-party hubs and docks (Valve’s Docking Station page).
- USB-C dock: useful for desk-based play of control-heavy games or for connecting a monitor, keyboard and mouse.
- Bluetooth keyboard: helpful for text-heavy games when typing is the main Playable inconvenience.
- Mouse: relevant to a docked setup, not a cure for a software blocker.
- microSD card: expands storage but does not interpret, repair or upgrade a compatibility badge.
Choose hardware for the task it solves—input convenience or storage—not as a way to bypass a Proton, anti-cheat or codec incompatibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the most common mistakes when reading a badge?
- Reading Verified as “60 fps guaranteed”: the rating covers Valve’s checklist and default configuration, not every performance target.
- Reading Playable as “broken”: it means the game functions with a possible manual step; inspect the stated reason.
- Reading Unknown as “Unsupported”: no review is not a failed review.
- Assuming Unsupported is permanent: game and middleware updates can change compatibility.
- Assuming a dock fixes software: accessories address controls and connectivity, not Proton or middleware barriers.
- Using an old screenshot: Valve’s ratings can change after builds and retesting.
- Assuming the badge proves offline operation: internet requirements belong to the individual game.
- Applying a Deck badge to another Steam device: use the rating for the hardware category you own.
How should you use the rating when deciding to play?
Start with the badge, then make a friction-based decision. Verified is the safest expectation for immediate setup, Playable calls for reading one specific caveat, Unknown calls for uncertainty, and Unsupported calls for identifying whether a later update or an alternative platform is more practical.

How Valve’s categories should influence expectations
Verified reduces setup uncertainty, Playable tells you where to expect intervention, Unsupported warns of a functional barrier, and Unknown tells you that Valve has not supplied a verdict. None of the four replaces the title-specific details or your own priorities.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I see the exact Deck compatibility reason for a game?
Open the game’s store page or library entry on the Deck, select the compatibility badge and open its detail panel. The panel identifies the condition Valve recorded instead of leaving you to infer it from the category name.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

The badge is Valve’s assessment of the Steam game listing and its reviewed launch path. A separately installed version can use different launchers, files or middleware, so its behavior should not be assumed from the Steam badge.
Can changing Proton versions override an Unsupported badge?
A different Proton configuration can alter behavior in some cases, but the badge itself records Valve’s current supported experience. It is not evidence that a workaround will be stable, complete or suitable for online services.
Why did a game’s Steam Deck badge change after an update?
Valve continues reviewing and retesting titles when builds or compatibility information change. A new executable, launcher, anti-cheat component or display behavior can therefore produce a different current classification.
