Steam Deck ratings and Proton answer different questions. Valve’s rating tells you whether a game delivers an acceptable complete experience on the handheld, including controls, display, launch flow, text entry, middleware and anti-cheat. Proton is the compatibility tool that lets many Windows games run inside SteamOS, Valve’s Linux-based operating system. A game can launch through Proton and still receive a low Deck rating if its controls, launcher, text, online service or required setup do not meet Valve’s criteria.
Use the rating as the official first check, then read the detailed compatibility notes and recent community reports for the game’s current version and online mode. The sections below explain what each label means, how Proton works, why sources can disagree and what to do when a title does not behave as expected.

What do Steam Deck Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown mean?
These are Valve’s four official Steam Deck compatibility categories. They describe Valve’s current review of the game on Deck, not a permanent technical verdict and not simply whether the executable starts once.
| Rating | Valve’s meaning | What it implies for you |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | The game works well on Steam Deck out of the box; no additional modification should be necessary. | You should be able to install, launch and play with the built-in controls and default presentation, subject to normal game or service updates. |
| Playable | The game works, but you may need manual adjustments. | Expect a documented compromise, such as choosing a community controller layout or using the touchscreen or a mouse in a launcher. |
| Unsupported | Valve currently does not consider the title playable on Steam Deck. | Do not buy it expecting a supported experience, but do not read the label as proof that no future Proton, game, driver or middleware change can help. |
| Unknown | Valve has not checked the title yet. | There is no official Deck assessment. You must rely on other evidence and be prepared to troubleshoot. |
Valve summarizes Verified as: “The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” That phrase is important: “Verified” is an experience guarantee within Valve’s criteria, not a claim that every setting, mod or third-party service will behave identically to a Windows desktop.

Ratings can change. Valve says it continues to add improvements that can enable games previously marked Unsupported, while a game update, launcher replacement or anti-cheat change can also alter practical behavior. Treat the badge as a current snapshot and open the compatibility details for the reason behind it.
What does Valve check before awarding a Deck rating?
Valve evaluates the complete handheld workflow. The check is broader than “does Proton launch the game?” and includes the points that most affect whether a game feels usable without a keyboard and mouse.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Input: The game should support the Deck’s controls, show appropriate controller icons and provide an on-screen keyboard when text entry is required. A title that launches but demands an unmanageable keyboard workflow can fail this part.
- Display: Valve checks support for the Deck’s default resolution, sensible default settings and text that remains legible on the built-in screen. Tiny, clipped or inaccessible interface text matters even when the 3D rendering works.
- Seamless startup: Compatibility warnings should not interrupt play, and launchers should be navigable with a controller where applicable. A game may need touchscreen or mouse input for a launcher and therefore receive Playable rather than Verified.
- System and middleware: The game and the components around it must work through Proton, including required video playback, launch services and anti-cheat support. A failure in a launcher or online middleware can determine the rating even if the game itself renders correctly.
- Practical usability: Valve’s developer guidance also considers performance, text entry, launcher behavior and other details that decide whether the result feels native to a handheld.
Because these checks cover the whole path from pressing Play to controlling the game, a technically runnable Windows title can still be Playable or Unsupported. Conversely, a game with a minor one-time adjustment may be considered Playable rather than rejected outright.
How does Proton work on Steam Deck?
Proton is Steam’s compatibility tool for Steam Play, based on Wine and additional components. It supplies the Windows API and runtime behavior a Windows game expects while the game runs in SteamOS, so developers do not have to produce a separate native Linux version for every title.
At a high level, Proton combines several layers:
- Wine-based Windows compatibility: Wine translates Windows system calls and runtime behavior into operations that can work in Linux. Proton carries game-focused patches and configuration on top of that foundation.
- Graphics translation: DXVK translates Direct3D 9, 10 and 11 calls into Vulkan for applications running through Wine. Proton also includes additional graphics components for newer Direct3D paths, so the exact translation route depends on the game’s rendering API.
- Steam integration: Steam launches the selected Proton build through Steam Play and manages the game’s prefix, files and runtime environment. Compatibility-tool choices and launch options are exposed through Steam’s per-game settings.
- Game-specific fixes: Proton changes over time through patches, component updates and targeted workarounds. A new build can therefore change a title’s behavior without the game developer changing the game itself.
The Proton project describes itself as a “Compatibility tool for Steam Play based on Wine and additional components.” Calling Proton a traditional emulator is misleading: it is a compatibility layer that maps Windows behavior into Linux rather than simulating an entire Windows computer instruction by instruction.

Why can a game run through Proton but still be rated Unsupported?
Because “runs” is only one part of Valve’s Deck test. Proton may get the executable to a menu while the game still fails a requirement for controls, text legibility, launcher navigation, video playback, middleware or anti-cheat.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor example, a title might render correctly but require a launcher that cannot be operated with a controller. Another may work offline but block its online mode because the anti-cheat service is not supported in the relevant Proton environment. A game can also need manual command-line options, a community layout or repeated desktop-mode steps that fall outside an out-of-the-box experience.
Unsupported is therefore a current platform judgment: Valve does not currently consider the title playable under its Deck criteria. It is not a promise that the title can never work. Proton releases, game patches, graphics drivers and middleware policies can change the result, so any workaround should be treated as conditional rather than permanent.
Should you check ProtonDB before buying a Steam game for Deck?
Yes, but use ProtonDB as supplementary evidence after checking Valve’s official rating and compatibility details. ProtonDB is a crowdsourced database of Linux and Steam Deck reports, not Valve’s certification system.
Start on the game’s Steam store page and open the Deck compatibility details. Note the specific issue Valve identifies, such as a launcher, input method or anti-cheat dependency. If the title is Playable, Unsupported or Unknown, consult recent ProtonDB reports that match the current game version, the Proton build, the launcher and whether you intend to play online or offline.

Community reports are valuable because they often document workarounds and regressions sooner than an official review. They are still individual observations: a report from one hardware revision, game patch or service state is not a guarantee for every Deck or future update. Give more weight to recent reports with clear steps and confirmation from multiple users than to an old one-line success claim.
How do you choose a Proton version for a game?
Begin with the default compatibility tool Steam supplies. Valve’s default is the best baseline for current fixes, runtime integration and support expectations. Change it only when the game’s compatibility details or recent, title-specific reports identify a reason.
- Open your Steam Library on the Deck and select the game.
- Open the game’s Properties menu.
- Select Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then choose an installed Proton build.
- Launch the game and check the exact failure you were trying to address. If the change does not help, return to the default tool rather than accumulating unrelated tweaks.
A different Proton build can fix a regression, improve a video or launcher component, or restore behavior after a game update. It can also introduce a new problem. Record which build worked, because later Proton, game and anti-cheat updates may change the outcome and make an old workaround unnecessary.
What should you do when a Deck game fails to launch or play correctly?
Identify the layer that failed before changing settings. The remedy for a graphics crash is different from the remedy for a controller, launcher or online-service problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Read Valve’s compatibility details: Do not rely only on the colored badge. The detail page may identify a known launcher, text, video or anti-cheat limitation.
- Confirm the scope: Determine whether the failure occurs before the game window, in a launcher, in a cutscene, only online or only after a recent patch.
- Try the default Proton tool first: Restart the game after changing nothing else, so you have a clean baseline.
- Apply only a documented adjustment: For a Playable title, that may mean selecting a community controller layout or using the touchscreen or mouse for a launcher. For a documented Proton issue, force the specific installed tool recommended by current reports.
- Check recent community evidence: Search ProtonDB for the same game version, Proton build and online/offline mode. Prefer reports with reproducible steps and dates.
- Undo stale workarounds: If a Proton or game update changed behavior, remove launch options and custom settings one at a time. A workaround that solved an older regression can become the new cause of failure.
Do not assume that a successful offline launch proves online compatibility. Anti-cheat and service authentication can fail separately, and a game’s status may change when the publisher updates its middleware.

What is the practical difference between Verified and Playable?
Verified is intended to work without additional modification; Playable means the game works but includes a known adjustment. The difference is usually convenience and completeness, not a simple pass-versus-fail line.
A Playable title may open a launcher that requires touchscreen input, show a desktop-style prompt, need a community controller layout or use an interface that is functional but less comfortable on the Deck screen. If you are willing to make that adjustment once, Playable may be perfectly suitable. If the Deck is for children, guests or quick suspend-and-resume sessions, the out-of-the-box expectation of Verified may matter more.
How should you interpret an Unknown rating?
Unknown means Valve has not completed an official check; it does not mean the game is broken. It also does not provide the positive assurance that comes with Verified.
For an Unknown title, look for current ProtonDB reports and pay particular attention to the game’s launcher, graphics API, controller mapping and online requirements. If the game is important to your purchase decision, allow time for setup and keep in mind that community evidence can lag behind a new game patch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can an Unsupported game still run on Steam Deck?
Sometimes. Valve’s Unsupported label means the current official review does not consider the game playable under Deck criteria, while community reports may show that a particular Proton build or workaround gets some version of the game running.

Those reports do not overturn Valve’s rating. They may cover only offline play, a specific launch option, an older patch or one hardware and service combination. Treat the title as a troubleshooting project, not as a supported purchase, and expect that a future game, Proton, driver or anti-cheat update could invalidate the workaround.
What should you check before buying a Windows game for Steam Deck?
Use this decision sequence:
- Official badge: Check whether Valve lists the game as Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown.
- Compatibility reason: Open the details and identify the failing or unresolved requirement instead of guessing from the badge alone.
- Play mode: Decide whether you need online multiplayer, a launcher, video-heavy campaigns or only offline single-player play.
- Current reports: Compare recent ProtonDB entries with the game version and Proton build you expect to use.
- Tolerance for setup: Decide whether you are comfortable selecting a layout, using touchscreen input, changing a Proton tool or revisiting settings after updates.
- Change risk: Remember that compatibility is maintained software, not a fixed property. Proton, drivers, game patches and anti-cheat services can improve or regress it.
This approach separates three questions that are often confused: can Proton technically start the Windows program, does Valve consider the full Deck experience acceptable, and do current players report a workable setup for your intended mode?
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What are the most common mistakes when reading Deck compatibility?
- Treating Verified as a performance guarantee: The badge covers Valve’s compatibility and usability criteria, not a promise of a particular frame rate in every graphics setting or future game build.
- Treating Unsupported as permanent: It is a current judgment. Improvements can change a title’s status, although no specific future fix is promised.
- Assuming ProtonDB is official: ProtonDB reports are community evidence and can be incomplete, outdated or tied to a specific configuration.
- Ignoring online requirements: A game that works offline may still fail when anti-cheat or another online middleware component is active.
- Changing several variables at once: Multiple launch options, Proton builds and controller changes make it difficult to tell which adjustment helped or caused a regression.
What is the simplest way to remember the system?
Valve’s rating describes the expected Steam Deck experience; Proton is the technology that makes many Windows games possible on SteamOS; ProtonDB supplies community clues when the official answer is incomplete. Check the official details first, match community reports to the current game and play mode, and treat every workaround as changeable software configuration rather than a permanent guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Steam Deck Verified mean a game is native to Linux?
No. A Verified game may still run through Proton rather than through a native Linux build. The badge describes the quality of the Deck experience, not the technology used to deliver it.
Will changing Proton delete my game saves?
Changing the compatibility tool is a runtime configuration change, but save handling depends on the game and its Steam Cloud or local-save setup. Confirm that cloud synchronization has completed before experimenting, especially with titles that store saves outside the usual Steam directory.
Why did a game’s Deck rating change after an update?
Valve can revise its review when game patches, Proton components, drivers, launchers or anti-cheat services change. A rating is time-sensitive, so re-open the compatibility details after a major update instead of relying on an old screenshot or forum post.
Can I use a controller layout made by another player?
Yes, community layouts are one of the adjustments Valve explicitly associates with Playable experiences. Review the layout’s controls before launching, because community mappings can target a different game mode, language or patch.
