Start by separating a single-game problem from a Deck-wide problem. If only one horror game hitches or closes, work through that game’s files, Proton compatibility, launch options, shader processing and launcher behavior. If several games stutter and Game Mode menus lag too, return the Deck to stock settings and investigate plugins, storage, firmware, thermals and support diagnostics.
The sequence below changes one variable at a time: restart and finish updates, verify files, test Proton deliberately, remove modifications, allow shader work to complete, then use conservative graphics settings. A title that stutters by itself usually has a game-specific cause; a Deck whose menus and multiple games hitch needs system-wide troubleshooting. Proton is Valve’s compatibility tool for running Windows games on Linux, so behavior can differ substantially between titles and Proton branches.
Only one horror game is affected
- Begin with Library > select the game > gear icon > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Check Properties > Compatibility and test the default Proton choice before forcing another branch.
- Remove anything in Properties > General > Launch Options while diagnosing.

Several games and the SteamOS interface are affected
Note whether the Library, Settings or Quick Access menus also hitch. Make a short symptom log first
Before changing settings, record the game, the exact scene, whether the failure is a hitch, freeze, crash or failure to launch, and whether it occurs after suspend/resume. Note handheld or docked mode, external display resolution, charging state and whether the SteamOS menus remain responsive. This takes a minute and gives you a useful comparison after every step.
What should I try first when a Steam Deck horror game crashes or hitches?
Follow this order and record the result after each step. Repeating the same change while several variables move at once makes the cause harder to identify.
- Restart the Deck. Use the normal SteamOS restart, not just a suspend/resume cycle. After it boots, open Downloads and let SteamOS, the game and any shader-cache processing finish.
- Record the boundary. Write down whether the problem occurs at launch, after the intro, in one scene, after suspend/resume, only while docked, or only on battery. Note the SteamOS and Proton labels shown on the Deck; do not assume the newest branch is best.
- Verify installed files. Run the Installed Files verification shown above and relaunch only after it completes. If Steam replaces files, the result is meaningful; if it finds nothing, move on rather than running verification repeatedly.
- Test Proton with one change. Use the game’s Compatibility page. Try the default or stable selection first, then one alternative branch, such as Proton Experimental, if the stable path fails. Reboot or fully exit the game between comparisons.
- Strip modifications. Disable Decky Loader plugins, performance overlays, frame-generation or upscaling injectors, custom launch options and non-default TDP, GPU or fan controls. Reintroduce one modification only after the unmodified game survives a restart.
- Let shader work finish. First-run compilation or a newly encountered effect can cause temporary frame-time spikes. If Steam is downloading or rebuilding a large shader or compatibility payload, free storage and allow the operation to complete before judging the game.
- Return graphics to a controlled baseline. Use the game’s native or lower resolution, a stable frame-rate or refresh-rate cap, and no forced scaling or frame generation. Compare frame-time consistency, not only the average FPS number.
Do not skip the reboot after a change
A complete exit is useful after a Proton switch, plugin change or fan-control change. A suspended process can retain the old environment, making two supposedly different tests look identical. Use the same save, camera route and display mode for each comparison so that a different scene does not disguise the result.
Why does the game crash after the intro?
A crash at a repeatable point often indicates a title-specific launcher, video codec, media file, anti-cheat component or Proton compatibility issue rather than a failing Deck.
Check the exact transition
Verify files first, then test the default Proton branch and one alternative. If the crash follows a logo movie, cutscene or launcher hand-off, note that detail when consulting the game’s current Steam Deck status and community compatibility reports. Test a clean launch
Remove launch options and overlays, disconnect unnecessary external displays or controllers, and start the game from a fresh boot. Do not add several command-line fixes at once: a clean result tells you whether an injector or option was involved.

When should I change Proton?
Change Proton only after file verification and a clean launch test. The default or stable branch is the reference point; Proton Experimental is a targeted diagnostic, not an automatic performance upgrade.

How should I handle shader compilation and storage pressure?
Shader compilation is a possible source of hitching, not proof of the cause. A first launch, a new area or an updated driver can trigger compilation; a cache update that cannot complete can also point to insufficient storage headroom.

Let Steam complete normal processing
Leave the Deck connected to power when practical, keep it awake, and watch Downloads until shader or compatibility processing stops. Avoid judging the first visit to every new scene as the final result. Scene-specific hitches may lessen after the required data has been generated, while a cache job that repeatedly stops deserves storage and support checks.
When storage is involved
Open the Deck’s storage view and remove games or downloads you no longer need when an update or cache job is blocked. An UHS-I microSD card can add capacity when storage is full, but extra capacity does not repair Proton incompatibility or eliminate shader compilation. No universal “keep X GB free” threshold is established here, so do not treat a made-up number as a guarantee. After freeing space, restart the download or cache operation and allow it to finish rather than repeatedly cancelling it.
Use cache deletion only as a targeted diagnostic
There is no single cache-clearing action that fixes every title. If a support instruction or a title-specific report calls for resetting shader or compatibility data, back up local saves, use the per-game storage or Proton-prefix control available in your SteamOS version, and expect the next launch to hitch while data is rebuilt. Do not delete broad system folders or run random shell commands copied from an unrelated game guide.

Steam Support troubleshooting guidance reproduced in a community report specifically calls out external plugins and, in some Deck crash or performance cases, the Enable updated fan control setting. If that setting is present on your Deck, turn it off temporarily, restart and retest. This is a diagnostic step, not a claim that the setting is faulty on every device.
Do not uninstall every tool permanently just to run one test. Disable the additions, confirm whether the stock configuration changes the symptom, then restore them one at a time. The first modification that brings the hitch or crash back is a stronger clue than a wholesale reinstall.
What graphics settings give a useful baseline?

If the horror game is stable handheld but not when docked, separate the display path from the game path. Test handheld mode at its normal resolution, then the external display at its intended resolution, with the same Proton branch and save. A problem that appears only after changing the maximum game resolution should be retested with the display’s intended setting.
Record whether the Deck is charging, on battery or connected through a dock when the hitch occurs. A USB-C PD charger compatible with Steam Deck is relevant only when the symptom is tied to charging or docked power behavior; a different charger is not a general cure for local stutter, Proton failures or shader compilation.

- If available, disable Enable updated fan control, restart and test an unmodified game.
- Finish SteamOS, game and shader downloads.
- In Settings > System, try Run storage device maintenance tasks if that option is exposed. A community report describes it as a possible maintenance step, but it is not a controlled test or a Valve guarantee.
- Test more than one game, including one that previously worked, and note whether menus still lag.
If the symptom survives those stock-settings checks, contact Steam Support. What should I tell Steam Support?
Give support a timeline rather than a list of guesses. Name the affected games, when each one last worked, the exact launch or scene boundary, and whether the issue affects Game Mode menus. Include the SteamOS and Proton labels shown on the Deck, whether the device is charging or docked, temperatures if you observed them, available storage symptoms, and any recent update, plugin, launch-option or hardware change.
Explain which controlled tests were completed: file verification, default Proton, one alternative Proton branch, stock settings, disabled plugins and fan control, completed shader processing, and any storage maintenance step. State the result of each test. Do not claim that a community workaround is an official fix, and do not omit a failed test simply because it did not help.
Why did it work before the last update?
An update can change game files, Proton behavior, shader data or SteamOS components, so a regression is plausible without proving that a particular release is universally bad. Community reports show update-associated failures, but they do not establish a single faulty current version.
Write down what changed and test the default or stable Proton choice after all downloads finish. Avoid stacking a Proton switch, a new launch option and graphics changes in the same attempt; if a later update resolves the issue, your notes will still identify the affected boundary. If only one title changed behavior, continue with its files and compatibility settings; if menus and several games changed together, preserve the system-wide evidence for support.

Do I need to factory-reset my Steam Deck?
Usually not as a first response. A factory reset or recovery reimage can remove local data and obscures whether a plugin, cache, Proton branch or storage condition caused the fault.
- Back up local saves and any files stored in Desktop mode.
- Complete the single-game and system-wide checks above with stock settings.
- Contact Steam Support with your symptom timeline and version details.
- Use Valve’s current Steam Deck recovery guidance only if support or the documented recovery procedure makes it appropriate. Avoid unofficial images and random terminal commands.
Recovery is most defensible when several games and the interface remain unstable after modifications are removed, maintenance is attempted and support has the relevant diagnostic information. It is not a shortcut for a single title that has an unresolved launcher or Proton compatibility issue.

How can I keep the diagnosis from becoming guesswork?
- Change one variable at a time and keep a short log of the branch, setting and result.
- Use the same scene or save when comparing frame-time behavior.
- Reboot after changing Proton, fan controls or plugins.
