Yes—you can replace the internal Steam Deck SSD with a 2TB NVMe drive, provided it is a single-sided M.2 2230 module. LCD and OLED models use the same storage format, but their rear-cover screws require different drivers. The safest workflow is to back up or clone your data, put the Deck into Battery storage mode, swap the shielded drive, then either verify your clone or reinstall SteamOS from an 8GB-or-larger USB key.

A documented 2TB option is the Crucial P310 CT2000P310SSD2. Its advertised PCIe 4.0 speeds are far above what the Deck can use, because the console’s supported interface is PCIe Gen3 x4. Treat this as a capacity upgrade, not a way to obtain desktop-Gen4 throughput.

What changes between LCD and OLED Steam Deck models?

The internal SSD format is the same on both versions: a single-sided M.2 2230 NVMe drive. The practical difference during disassembly is the rear-cover driver and the illustrated pry sequence.

Steam Deck model Rear-cover driver iFixit time estimate Internal SSD
LCD Phillips 20 minutes to 1 hour (iFixit, 2025) Single-sided M.2 2230 NVMe
OLED T6 Torx 30 minutes to 1 hour (iFixit, 2026) Single-sided M.2 2230 NVMe

Valve warns that it does not recommend opening or modifying the device and that damage caused by doing so will not be covered under its product warranty. Work slowly, use the correct driver, and stop if a screw or cable resists.

Which 2TB SSD fits a Steam Deck?

Choose a single-sided M.2 2230 NVMe SSD. A full-size 2280 desktop drive is the wrong length, and a double-sided module can create clearance and shielding problems inside the Deck.

Micron lists the Crucial P310 CT2000P310SSD2 as a 2TB PCIe 4.0 2230 drive compatible with handheld consoles including Steam Deck. Micron’s 2025 specifications quote up to 7,100 MB/s sequential read and 6,000 MB/s sequential write. Those are the drive’s own advertised limits under its test conditions, not expected Deck performance: Kingston identifies the Deck’s supported link as PCIe Gen3 x4, so a Gen4 label does not make the console operate at Gen4 speed.

The P310 family is documented in both 1TB and 2TB capacities. Select 2TB when your library, non-Steam games, emulators, or local media justify the extra space and the model is available at a sensible price; capacity is the main benefit the Deck can realize from this upgrade.

Should I clone the old SSD or reinstall SteamOS?

Cloning preserves your existing SteamOS environment, while a clean re-image starts over and requires you to restore games and customizations. Either route requires a backup you can trust.

Route What you need What it preserves Main trade-off
Clone An external backup or cloning device, often a USB-C NVMe enclosure, plus a verified copy The existing operating-system environment, installed configuration, and files captured by the clone More preparation and a second drive or enclosure; an unverified clone can leave you without a working fallback
Clean SteamOS recovery An 8GB-or-larger USB key prepared with Valve’s SteamOS recovery media A fresh SteamOS installation after setup Games, emulators, and custom configurations must be restored

Steam Cloud does not necessarily contain non-Steam games, emulator data, or custom configurations. Copy irreplaceable files to external storage even if you intend to clone, and keep the original SSD untouched until the replacement has booted and your important data is accounted for.

How do I upgrade a Steam Deck SSD to 2TB?

Follow these 13 steps in order. The driver in step 7 depends on whether your Deck is LCD or OLED.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. 1. Identify the model

Confirm whether the console is a Steam Deck LCD or OLED. Storage compatibility is the same, but LCD rear-cover screws use a Phillips driver and OLED screws use a T6 Torx driver.

  2. 2. Choose the replacement drive

Buy a single-sided M.2 2230 NVMe module. For a documented 2TB choice, use the Crucial P310 CT2000P310SSD2 or another drive that explicitly matches the 2230, single-sided requirements.

  3. 3. Gather tools and recovery media

Prepare the model-specific driver, a plastic opening pick, tweezers, ESD protection, an external backup or cloning device, and an 8GB-or-larger USB key for SteamOS recovery. Plastic picks are safer than metal tools around the case seam and cables.

  4. 4. Back up before opening the case

Clone the original SSD or copy irreplaceable files to external storage. Do not assume Steam synchronization covers non-Steam games, emulators, or custom configurations. If you clone, verify that the copy can be read before proceeding.

  5. 5. Remove the microSD card

Take the microSD card out before opening the Deck. Leaving it installed can damage or trap the card when the rear cover is separated.

  6. 6. Power down safely

Shut the Deck down completely, unplug every cable, and let the battery charge fall below 25%. Enter BIOS Setup Utility > Power > Battery storage mode and enable storage mode before removing the cover.

  7. 7. Remove the rear screws

Use the Phillips driver for LCD or the T6 Torx driver for OLED. Keep screws organized by location because their positions and lengths can differ; do not force a driver that does not seat fully.

  8. 8. Separate the back cover

Run a plastic opening pick around the seam, following the pry points in the model-specific iFixit guide. Avoid metal tools, excessive bending, and pressure near cables or clips. Lift the cover only after all clips have released.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  9. 9. Expose the SSD

Remove the internal shield covering the drive and retain its short screw. The SSD is wrapped in ESD shielding; preserve that sleeve because it must be transferred to the replacement or replaced with equivalent shielding.

    • STAY COOL, RUN FAST: Push limits, not temperatures. A 5nm controller boosts power efficiency up to 49% over the 990 PRO SSD³, while advanced thermal control keeps performance smooth and reliable.
  10. 10. Swap the drive

Remove the SSD retaining screw, slide the old 2230 module out, and transfer the shielding sleeve to the new single-sided module. Insert the replacement at the same angle, press it flat, and reinstall the retaining screw without overtightening.

  11. 11. Reassemble the Deck

Refit the internal shield and rear cover, reconnect anything disturbed during disassembly, and return every screw to its original position. Check that the cover seam is closed evenly before tightening the screws.

  12. 12. Choose migration or recovery

If you cloned the old drive, verify the clone and boot the Deck normally. For a blank drive, connect the SteamOS recovery USB, open the Deck’s boot manager, and choose the appropriate Valve SteamOS install or re-image option. Re-imaging writes a fresh system to the new SSD, so plan to restore games and customizations afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  13. 13. Finish setup and test

Complete SteamOS setup, install updates, restore games and files, and check storage capacity, controls, thumbsticks, buttons, and touchpads. After a re-image, iFixit notes that controls may not register immediately; use the touchscreen until updates finish, then restart the Deck.

What should I check if the upgraded Deck does not work?

  • The drive is not detected: power down, reopen the Deck, and confirm the 2230 module is fully inserted at the correct angle, its retaining screw is present, and the shielding sleeve is not obstructing the connector.
  • The cover will not close evenly: stop and inspect for a misplaced screw, an unseated shield, or a cable caught along the seam. Never tighten screws to pull a misaligned cover into place.
  • A blank drive will not boot: recreate or recheck the SteamOS recovery USB, confirm it is at least 8GB, and select Valve’s installation or re-image option from the boot manager.
  • Controls are unresponsive after recovery: finish SteamOS updates with the touchscreen, restart, and test the controls again before assuming the hardware was damaged.
  • Your files are missing: return to the verified clone or external backup. Steam Cloud is not a complete backup for non-Steam games, emulators, and custom configurations.

How much time should the physical replacement take?

iFixit estimates 20 minutes to one hour for the LCD replacement and 30 minutes to one hour for the OLED guide. Those are repair estimates for the hardware work; backup, cloning, recovery-media preparation, downloads, updates, and game restoration add time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to format a blank 2230 SSD before installing it?

No. Install the compatible blank drive first, then use Valve’s SteamOS recovery media to install or re-image it. Formatting it in another computer is unnecessary for the recovery workflow.

Can I put the original SSD back if the upgrade fails?

Yes, provided you keep the original module and its shielding sleeve intact. Power down, return the original drive to its connector, and use it as a rollback while you diagnose the replacement or recovery media.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a 2280 SSD with an adapter?

The Deck is designed around a single-sided M.2 2230 module, so a 2280 drive is not the specified internal format. An adapter does not change the case’s length, clearance, shielding, or mounting requirements.

Should I keep the old SSD after a successful migration?

Keep it until the new installation has booted, updated, and passed your file and control checks. After that, store the original as a recovery fallback or place it in a suitable external enclosure; do not erase it before verification.
