To switch Steam Deck between SteamOS Stable, Beta, and Preview, use Game Mode: press STEAM, open Settings > System > System Update Channel, choose a channel, then install the offered update and restart. Selecting a channel alone does not change the installed SteamOS version. For everyday play, Stable is the sensible default; use Beta or Preview when a current Valve update note covers a fix or feature you need, or you are prepared for test-build bugs.

What do Stable, Beta, and Preview mean on Steam Deck?

They are update channels—release streams that determine which eligible SteamOS image the Deck checks for—not fixed editions or a menu of historical versions. Stable is the production stream for ordinary play. Beta and Preview are testing streams, and Valve labels their test updates as including features that are still being tested.

The distinction between Beta and Preview has shifted over time, so older explanations may not describe what a Deck receives today. In a 2023 explanation of the unified selector, ValveSoftware contributor lostgoat described Stable as the stable Steam client plus stable OS, Beta as the beta client plus stable OS, and Preview as the beta client plus beta OS. That was the original mapping. In Valve’s 2026 SteamOS 3.9.3, 3.9.4, and 3.9.5 Beta announcements, the OS test builds were offered to both Beta and Preview. Do not assume that Beta is always Steam-client-only or that the two test channels always deliver different SteamOS images; check the current release note for the build being offered.

As of 23 October 2026, SteamOS 3.9.5 had been released for all users, making it the current Stable release reported in Valve’s announcement. The 3.9.5 Beta post on the same date also showed that test-channel work continued after Stable reached 3.9.5. A daily-play user should not switch to Preview simply to get SteamOS 3.9; Stable already had it. The relevant question is whether a newer test build offers something you specifically need.

Channel What it means in practice When it may make sense
Stable Production SteamOS for regular use. Daily play and a preference for the normal release stream.
Beta A testing channel. Valve’s 2026 notes offered SteamOS test images to Beta and Preview; older guides describe a different client/OS split. A current Beta or Preview release note identifies a fix or feature you want to try.
Preview A testing channel for unfinished Steam and SteamOS work. Independent guides commonly characterize it as the more experimental path, but Valve does not publish a permanent rule that every Preview build is riskier than every Beta build. You accept more uncertainty and can tolerate troubleshooting or reporting a bug.

How do I switch the Steam Deck System Update Channel?

Make the change in Game Mode, then allow the update and restart to complete. The setting changes the stream the Deck follows; it does not install a new version at the instant you choose it.

Before switching

A channel change is normally a software update rather than a wipe, but preparation protects files and reduces avoidable interruptions. Independent how-tos recommend taking a photo of the current channel and SteamOS version at Settings > System, verifying that cloud saves have actually synced, and copying irreplaceable Desktop Mode documents off the Deck. Make a note of non-Flatpak packages, scripts, and plugins you rely on: Valve warns that software installed outside Flatpak can disappear during a SteamOS update.

  • Use a stable internet connection and connect the Deck to power before a large OS download or restart.
  • Do not force the Deck off while an update is installing.
  • Keep the starting channel and version handy so you can confirm the result afterward.
  • If a particular bug fix is your reason for switching, read the current Valve Steam Deck news post first and check that the offered build actually lists it.

Switch in Game Mode

  1. Connect to the internet. Plug in the Deck if you expect a large download or update.
  2. Press the STEAM button.
  3. Choose Settings, then System.
  4. Open System Update Channel. Some builds and older videos show this control under the heading Beta Participation.
  5. Select Stable, Beta, or Preview. Read any warning shown on the Deck; Valve’s wording and channel labels can change.
  6. Wait for SteamOS to check the selected stream. If an image is offered, let it download and install.
  7. Complete the requested restart. Keep the Deck powered until it has finished booting.
  8. Return to Settings > System and confirm the selected channel and installed SteamOS version. Only then assess the feature or fix that prompted the change.

If Beta Participation or the channel selector is missing, first make sure the Deck is in Game Mode rather than Desktop Mode. A channel switch may also appear to do nothing if the selected stream has no newer eligible image than the one already installed. In that case, confirm the selected channel and wait for the next normal update check; no immediate download is not, by itself, proof that the selection failed.

What happens after choosing a channel?

The dropdown records your preferred stream, then SteamOS checks whether that stream has an image newer than the one already installed. The download and installation are separate steps. You may see no progress until the update check completes, and a restart can be required more than once. Do not judge the switch by the selector immediately after the first reboot; verify the channel and version once the Deck has fully returned to Game Mode.

On some hardware, especially when moving from Stable to Preview, the selector can briefly show Beta after restarting. GitHub issue 11988, opened 7 May 2025, reported that behavior on both the LCD Jupiter and OLED Galileo models and said the final choice could require selecting Preview again and completing additional reboots. That is a UI or sequencing problem, not evidence that the Deck has a separate LCD-only or OLED-only channel. If the setting looks wrong, let all pending updates finish, open the selector again, choose the intended channel, and recheck the installed version.

Which channel should I choose for everyday play?

Choose Stable unless you have a specific reason to run a test build. Beta and Preview can introduce changes before they are ready for general use, and a Deck that is important for daily gaming is a poor place to accept unnecessary update risk.

  • Maturity: Stable is the production stream; Beta and Preview are for testing. Valve’s test-build notices explicitly say their features are still being tested.
  • What is delivered: The 2026 Valve notes named both Beta and Preview for OS test images. The older 2023 mapping explains why some guides describe a different division between client and OS updates.
  • Update cadence: Test channels can receive updates more often, so allow for download and restart time and expect the possibility of regressions.
  • Supportable combination: Avoid combining the Steam client on Stable with SteamOS on an OS beta. The 2023 explanation cautioned that this client-stable/OS-beta mix was unsupported and could produce unexpected bugs.
  • Rollback limits: Returning to Stable installs the current Stable image, while Previous SteamOS returns to the previous image available on the device. Neither is a catalog of every past release.

In 2026, Valve’s SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta notes said the update was for the Beta and Preview channels and included features still being tested. Stable then advanced to 3.9.5 for all users on 23 October. Those dated facts illustrate why readers should check current notes rather than choosing a channel based on an old guide’s version map.

What changed in SteamOS 3.9.5 Stable?

The 23 October 2026 Stable release is a useful example of why channel choice should follow the feature you need. Valve listed an updated Arch base, a Desktop Mode Plasma update from 6.4.3 to 6.7.3, and a Linux kernel rebased on Linux 7.2. It also included an idle-power improvement when no audio is playing and a fix for first connection to hidden Wi-Fi networks. The default Wi-Fi backend changed to wpa_supplicant.

These changes are already in Stable, so switching to Preview is not required to obtain them. Valve also stated that hibernation was “Not yet enabled on Steam Deck due to an outstanding driver bug.” A test channel should not be treated as a promise that every desired feature is enabled; read the release notes for the exact build.

How do I go back to Stable from SteamOS Beta or Preview?

Use the same channel selector, choose Stable, install the update SteamOS offers, and restart. This returns the Deck to the current Stable release—not necessarily the exact SteamOS build that was installed before you opted into testing.

  1. In Game Mode, open STEAM > Settings > System > System Update Channel.
  2. Select Stable.
  3. Install the offered Stable update and complete the restart.
  4. Reopen Settings > System and check the channel and installed version.

If Stable has moved on during your time on a test channel, the Deck receives that newer Stable image. For example, Valve released SteamOS 3.9.5 for all users on 23 October 2026. The channel selector is not a version picker: it does not offer an arbitrary older release such as SteamOS 3.8.x.

A normal channel change is not the same as re-imaging the device. XDA’s 2023 guide said no data is lost during the channel-change process, but that should not be read as a guarantee about every failure or recovery operation. Keep important files backed up, particularly before using recovery options that explicitly wipe the device.

What if the Deck will not boot after a Preview update?

Try the Previous SteamOS boot option first; it is the less destructive recovery path Valve documented for users stuck on Preview updates. If that option is absent or does not resolve the problem, use Valve’s USB recovery process and choose the repair option before considering a wipe.

Try Previous SteamOS

  1. Hold the Power button and choose Shutdown; wait for the Deck to turn off completely.
  2. Hold the Quick Access menu button marked …, then press Power.
  3. At the boot menu, choose the second option, Previous SteamOS.
  4. After the Deck boots, check for updates as usual and select the appropriate channel.

This option uses the previous SteamOS installation present on the device. It is not a list of every past release. It can preserve your existing user data because it boots the image already stored on the Deck, but it does not let you browse back through every historical version.

Use Valve’s USB recovery image if needed

Valve’s SteamOS Installation and Repair instructions call for a USB key with at least 8GB of capacity. Prepare the recovery media on another computer: Valve’s instructions name Rufus for Windows and Balena Etcher for macOS or Linux; Linux users can also write the decompressed image with dd.

  1. Get the Steam Deck recovery image from Valve’s SteamOS download page for Steam Deck and create the USB recovery media.
  2. Turn off the Deck. Hold Volume Up and press Power; release Volume Up when the chime sounds.
  3. In the boot menu, open Boot Manager and choose EFI USB Device.
  4. Choose Repair SteamOS to reinstall SteamOS while attempting to preserve games and personal content.
  5. After repair, install software updates from Settings > System.

Do not confuse Repair SteamOS with Re-image Device or Wipe Device & Install SteamOS. The latter choices wipe user data and install stock SteamOS, so they are more destructive recovery options. An 8GB drive is the minimum Valve specifies; a larger drive can be more convenient, but the recovery requirement is the image and the correct boot procedure, not a particular brand.

Does this work on LCD and OLED Steam Deck?

Yes. The Game Mode path applies to the LCD Jupiter and OLED Galileo models. The Stable-to-Preview selector issue reported in issue 11988 affected both, so neither model should be assumed immune to an extra reboot or a temporarily misleading channel label. Channel selection changes SteamOS software, not the display, storage tier, battery, or other hardware capabilities.

Valve’s store estimates roughly 3–12 hours of gameplay depending on the title and settings, and describes the OLED model as offering 30–50% more battery life than LCD. Those hardware differences do not change the update-channel steps. If you use a dock, external display, or a 45W USB-C charger, reconnect it after the update and test sleep, Wi-Fi, audio, and dock output before relying on the Deck for travel or a long session.

Should I use Desktop Mode or the steamos-select-branch command?

No for a normal channel change: the consumer-facing route is the Game Mode selector. A third-party man page documents the steamos-select-branch command, including options to show the current branch (-c), list branches (-l), or select names such as stable, beta, and main. It is an advanced route, not a better substitute for the supported Game Mode control.

In particular, main is a bleeding-edge OS branch, not another name for the Game Mode option called Preview. Valve’s SteamOS 3.9 notes also said that various scripts and packages had been renamed from steamos- to holo-, with aliases retained where appropriate. That means an old command name may still work as an alias, but command names and behavior are not a reason to bypass the consumer selector. Leave Show Advanced Update Channels off unless following a Valve developer instruction; lostgoat described it as intended for SteamOS developers, not end users.

How can I tell whether the switch really worked?

Use three checks rather than relying on one label. First, open Settings > System and confirm the selected channel. Second, record the installed SteamOS version and compare it with the version named in the Valve release post. Third, test the function that motivated the change—such as Wi-Fi, sleep, a dock, audio, or a particular game—after the restart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If there is no download, the selected channel may simply have no newer eligible image. If the channel changes but the version does not, wait for the normal update check instead of repeatedly toggling options. If the Deck reboots into a different label, complete any pending update and check again. Do not use the Developer-only advanced-channel toggle to force a result unless Valve support or a developer specifically instructs you to do so.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does SteamOS 3.9.5 enable hibernation on Steam Deck?

No. Valve’s 23 October 2026 SteamOS 3.9 notes said hibernation was “Not yet enabled on Steam Deck due to an outstanding driver bug.” The release’s other changes do not mean that feature is available.

What Wi-Fi changes did SteamOS 3.9.5 include?

Valve’s release notes list a fix for first connection to hidden Wi-Fi networks and a change to the default Wi-Fi backend to wpa_supplicant. Whether either change addresses a particular connection problem depends on the device and network.

Is the SteamOS channel procedure different on LCD and OLED Decks?

The same Game Mode channel selector is described for both LCD and OLED models. The documented selector glitch report also covered both Jupiter (LCD) and Galileo (OLED), so neither model is exempt from checking the final channel after a restart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my Deck still show Beta after I selected Preview?

A Stable-to-Preview transition can require extra reboots, and issue 11988 reported that the selector could show Beta after the first restart on both LCD and OLED models. Let updates finish, choose Preview again if necessary, restart, and verify the final channel and SteamOS version in Settings > System.

Will switching channels delete my games or saves?

A normal channel change is an update process, and XDA reported no data loss during it. Cloud saves should still be verified, and Desktop Mode documents or other irreplaceable files should be copied elsewhere. USB recovery is different: Repair SteamOS attempts to preserve content, while Re-image Device and Wipe Device & Install SteamOS erase user data.

Can I install an older SteamOS version when I leave Beta?

No. Selecting Stable installs the current Stable image offered by Valve, not the exact version you used previously and not an arbitrary historical release such as 3.8.x. Previous SteamOS boots the previous image retained on the device, not a catalog of old builds.

Is Preview always riskier than Beta?

Valve does not publish a permanent rule that every Preview build is riskier than every Beta build. Older documentation mapped Preview to the beta client plus beta OS, while 2026 Valve announcements offered the same OS test images to Beta and Preview. Read the current release note and treat both as testing streams.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if Beta Participation is missing?

Switch from Desktop Mode to Game Mode. Press STEAM, open Settings > System, and look for System Update Channel; some builds still place it under the Beta Participation heading.

Do I need a paid subscription or special hardware to change channels?

The documented procedure uses the built-in Game Mode selector on an owned Steam Deck. The recovery path, if needed, requires a USB key of at least 8GB and another computer to create the media; those are recovery requirements, not prerequisites for an ordinary channel switch.

What is the difference between steamos-select-branch and Preview?

The third-party command can list or select branches including stable, beta, and main. Main is a bleeding-edge OS branch and is not a synonym for the Game Mode Preview option. For consumer use, Valve’s supported route is the Game Mode System Update Channel selector.

The Bottom Line

Use STEAM > Settings > System > System Update Channel in Game Mode, then install the offered image and restart. Keep Stable for routine play; choose Beta or Preview only for a current test feature or fix. To leave testing, select Stable and install the current Stable build. If the Deck will not boot, try Previous SteamOS before Valve’s USB Repair SteamOS option, and reserve a wipe for last resort.
