Use SteamOS’s built-in updater first: open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates, install the offered version, and restart when it finishes. Keep the Stable channel selected unless you deliberately want pre-release software. If a problem begins after an update, the least-destructive recovery is Steam Deck’s built-in rollback: power the Deck off, hold …, press Power, keep holding … until the SteamOS menu appears, then choose Previous B. Valve documents that rollback as returning to the previous known-good OS while retaining user data such as installed games and saves. USB recovery is for repair or reinstallation when rollback is not enough; an official recovery image and an 8GB-or-larger USB key are required.

What should I do before updating SteamOS?

A normal update is designed to be routine, but a few checks reduce the chance of an avoidable interruption. Keep the Deck connected to power, close running games, and make sure you have enough time for the installation and restart. If specific save files or configuration files are irreplaceable, maintain your own backup before changing the operating system; rollback is documented as data-preserving, not as a replacement for a backup strategy.

  • Use a stable power source. Do not begin an operating-system update with a nearly empty battery or disconnect the charger during installation.
  • Record customizations you cannot easily recreate. Desktop Mode applications, scripts and configuration files may not be treated the same way as SteamOS components.
  • Know which channel you are using. Stable is the reliability-oriented choice. Beta and Preview are optional pre-release channels for readers who knowingly accept more frequent changes.

It also helps to be clear about what kind of change you are making. A routine system update is installed from Settings; a rollback chooses a previous known-good OS entry; repair reinstalls SteamOS from recovery media; and a re-image or user-data erase can remove local content. These are different actions, with different starting points and data-loss consequences. If your goal is simply to install the update offered by SteamOS, you do not need to create a recovery USB or enter the Boot Manager.

How do I update SteamOS safely on a Steam Deck?

The normal update path is entirely inside Game Mode. SteamOS shows the version currently offered to your device, so use that version rather than assuming a particular release remains current.

  1. Open Steam from the Game Mode menu.
  2. Choose Settings, then System.
  3. Open Software Updates. If an update is available, SteamOS displays the install action there.
  4. Install the offered system update and leave the Deck connected to power while it works.
  5. Restart the Deck after installation. A restart is part of Valve’s first troubleshooting steps when an update is followed by instability.

An update completing is not the same as a particular game, driver, plug-in or Desktop Mode customization being fixed. After the restart, check the behavior that prompted the update. If the Deck is still unstable, move to diagnosis or rollback instead of jumping directly to a factory reset.

Use the version listed in Software Updates as the current offer for your device. Valve announced SteamOS 3.9.5 for all users on October 23, 2026, but that is a dated release detail, not a reason to expect the same version to remain current. The channel and update available on your Deck are the practical checks to make before installing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use Stable, Beta, or Preview?

For a safety-first update, select Stable. To change channels, open Settings > System > Beta Participation and choose the channel you understand and intend to run. Beta and Preview builds can expose fixes earlier, but they are testing channels rather than the conservative default.

Valve’s announcement feed recorded SteamOS 3.9.5 as released to all users on October 23, 2026, while separate SteamOS 3.9.x Beta and Preview announcements were still labeled as being tested. That date is a release snapshot, not a permanent recommendation: install the version currently offered under Software Updates and verify the channel shown in Beta Participation.

The choice is about your tolerance for pre-release changes, not a requirement for making a normal update. If reliability is your priority and you do not want to test builds, stay on Stable. If you intentionally want to participate in testing, confirm the channel selection before updating so you know whether the offered system version is a Stable release or a Beta or Preview build.

What can an update remove from Desktop Mode?

Valve warns that software installed outside Flatpak may be wiped by a future SteamOS update. This warning applies to applications and customizations added outside SteamOS’s supported Flatpak path; it does not mean every game installed through Steam will disappear.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before updating, note the names of non-Flatpak applications, save their installers or setup notes, and copy any important configuration or project files to storage you control. Treat those items separately from Steam library content and saved games, because their survival across an operating-system update is not guaranteed.

This is a separate concern from SteamOS rollback. Valve’s statement about rollback retaining user data refers to items such as installed games and saves; it should not be taken as a promise that every Desktop Mode program or customization will survive every future update. If you rely on a non-Flatpak application, keep track of how you installed it and how to restore its settings rather than assuming it is part of the standard SteamOS installation.

How do I roll back SteamOS after a bad update?

Rollback is the targeted recovery step when a problem appears after a recent OS change. Valve describes it as returning to the last known good version of SteamOS while retaining user data, including installed games and saves. It is not a general version picker with an arbitrary list of older releases.

  1. Fully power the Steam Deck down. Valve recommends performing the procedure while the Deck is connected to power.
  2. Press and hold the … button.
  3. While continuing to hold …, press the Power button.
  4. Keep holding … until the menu labeled SteamOS appears.
  5. Select Previous B. This is the rollback entry named in Valve’s recovery instructions.

Allow the Deck to complete the boot process. If the original symptom was caused by the newly installed system version, the previous entry should provide a way back without selecting a wipe operation. If the Deck remains unusable, proceed to the recovery hierarchy below rather than repeating the same boot attempt indefinitely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pay close attention to the menu labels. The intended rollback choice is Previous B; do not choose Erase User Data or a re-image option if your goal is to return to the previous OS while retaining local content. The rollback path is useful specifically because it is built into the Deck’s boot process and does not require you to first prepare a USB drive.

Will rolling back SteamOS delete my games or saves?

Valve’s support documentation says SteamOS can recover to a last known good OS “while retaining user data (e.g. installed games, saves, etc.).” That is the documented intent of the rollback entry. It should still be treated as an operating-system recovery action, not as a substitute for keeping personal copies of data that would be difficult to recreate.

Do not confuse Previous B with Erase User Data, Re-image Device, or Wipe Device & Install SteamOS. Those are separate recovery choices with materially different data-loss consequences.

If protecting a particular file is essential, back it up independently whenever the Deck’s condition allows. The fact that rollback is documented to retain user data is reassuring, but it is not a universal guarantee for every local file, third-party application, or customization. In particular, keep the separate warning about non-Flatpak Desktop Mode software in mind.

Which Steam Deck recovery option should I choose?

Choose the least-destructive option that matches the failure. Rollback uses the built-in menu; repair and the more destructive choices require USB recovery media and the Boot Manager.

Option Use it when Data-preservation expectation How it starts
Rollback to previous OS A problem began after a recent SteamOS change and the Deck can reach the SteamOS recovery menu. Intended to retain user data, including installed games and saves. Power off, hold …, press Power, choose Previous B.
Repair SteamOS SteamOS needs to be reinstalled but preserving games and personal content is the priority. Attempts to preserve games and personal content; preservation is not guaranteed. Boot an official recovery USB and choose the repair option.
Recovery tools You need tools for changes to the boot partition or other recovery work. Depends on the operation you perform; do not assume it is data-neutral. Boot an official recovery USB, then open the recovery desktop’s tools.
Re-image Device / Wipe Device & Install SteamOS A clean installation is acceptable or necessary after less-destructive paths fail. Full wipe: removes user information, installed games, applications and operating systems on the device. Boot an official recovery USB and select the full re-image option.
Erase User Data from Deck You intentionally want to remove local user data from the recovery menu. Removes local user data; treat it as a destructive action. Use the recovery menu entry, following its confirmation prompts.

The labels can change as Valve revises the recovery environment, but the distinctions matter: repair is an attempt to preserve content, while re-image and erase actions are designed to remove local data.

Think through the choices along four lines before acting: what failed, how much data you can risk, whether the Deck can reach its built-in menu, and whether you can boot recovery media. A recent system problem points first to Previous B. A SteamOS reinstall with content preservation as the priority points to Repair SteamOS, with the important caveat that preservation is an attempt. A full re-image is a last-resort clean-install choice when you accept that local information, installed games, applications and operating systems will be removed.

Factory reset is not a synonym for every recovery action. Valve’s recovery instructions distinguish the less-destructive repair attempt from re-image and wipe choices, and separately list Erase User Data from Deck. Read the exact option and confirmation screen rather than relying on a broad label such as “reset.”

How do I repair SteamOS without wiping my Steam Deck?

Repair SteamOS reinstalls the operating system while attempting to preserve games and personal content. Because Valve uses “attempting,” do not describe repair as guaranteed preservation. If losing local data is unacceptable, stop and make whatever backup the current condition of the Deck allows before proceeding.

Repair is not the same as rollback. Rollback returns to the previous known-good OS entry and normally uses the Deck’s built-in menu. Repair replaces SteamOS from recovery media when the installed system itself needs to be reinstalled.

To reach repair, use an official recovery image on a USB drive, boot it through the Deck’s Boot Manager, and select the repair option in the recovery environment. Do not select Re-image Device or Wipe Device & Install SteamOS as a substitute: those options are intended to perform a full wipe. If your first priority is retaining games and personal content, verify that the option you select is explicitly Repair SteamOS before continuing.

How do I make a SteamOS recovery USB?

Valve’s recovery workflow requires an official SteamOS recovery image and a USB key with a minimum capacity of 8GB. An 8GB-or-larger USB flash drive is needed for this recovery-media process, not for routine updates or the built-in rollback path. A USB-C hub with a USB port can be used when direct connection is impractical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Download the appropriate SteamOS recovery image through Valve’s current installation and recovery instructions.
  2. Write the image to an 8GB-or-larger USB drive. Valve’s guide includes platform-specific instructions, including Rufus on Windows and Balena Etcher on macOS and Linux.
  3. Shut the Steam Deck down completely.
  4. Insert the recovery drive directly into the Deck, or connect it through a compatible hub if necessary.
  5. Hold Volume Up and press Power to enter the Boot Manager.
  6. Select EFI USB Device to boot from the recovery drive.
  7. When the recovery desktop appears, select the operation that matches your data-loss tolerance: repair, recovery tools, or a full wipe/re-image.

Writing the image to the USB drive prepares recovery media; it does not itself change the Deck’s internal storage. The data-loss decision occurs after booting the recovery environment, so read each option’s wording before confirming.

Use Valve’s current recovery instructions for the image and the platform-specific writing steps; avoid relying on an old download address or assuming recovery-screen labels never change. On Windows, Valve’s guide includes Rufus instructions; on macOS and Linux, it includes Balena Etcher instructions. The capacity requirement is at least 8GB. You can connect the USB drive directly or through a hub if needed, but neither a USB drive nor a hub is part of the ordinary Settings update or built-in rollback procedure.

What should I do if the Deck will not boot normally?

If the Deck cannot reach Game Mode, use the least-destructive boot path available. First try the built-in rollback sequence while connected to power. If the SteamOS menu does not provide a usable previous entry, create recovery media and enter the Boot Manager with Volume Up plus Power.

  • The Deck reaches the SteamOS menu: choose Previous B for a recent-update problem. Do not select a wipe option merely because the update was inconvenient.
  • The Deck reaches the recovery desktop from USB: choose Repair SteamOS when preserving content is the priority, understanding that preservation is only an attempt.
  • Repair does not resolve the failure: use recovery tools only when you understand the boot-partition change required. Escalate to Re-image Device or Wipe Device & Install SteamOS only when a clean installation is acceptable or necessary.
  • You need to remove local information deliberately: use Erase User Data from Deck, recognizing that it is a destructive action distinct from rollback.

The USB route is a separate recovery workflow: fully shut down, connect the prepared drive, use Volume Up plus Power for the Boot Manager, and choose EFI USB Device. That starts the recovery environment; it does not automatically re-image the Deck. You still need to select an operation there, and the selection determines the data-loss risk.

How can I tell an update problem from a game problem?

Check whether the failure affects SteamOS itself or only one title. A system-wide boot, settings or interface problem that began immediately after an OS update is a candidate for rollback. A single game failing while the rest of the interface works may require game-specific troubleshooting instead; rolling back the entire operating system is a broader intervention.

After restarting from an update, reproduce the original symptom once, note whether it is system-wide, and identify whether you changed channels or installed non-Flatpak software. This short diagnosis prevents a factory reset from becoming the default response to an isolated application issue.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Keep the sequence proportional to the problem. Restart after installing the update, then check whether the original issue remains. If it does and it appears to involve SteamOS following a recent change, rollback is a more targeted next step than a wipe. If the interface and other titles work and the failure is limited to one game, consider that scope before changing the operating system. Avoid treating “update installed” as proof that every game, plug-in, or Desktop Mode application should now work.

What are the important Steam Deck update safety boundaries?

  • Normal update: uses Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates and should be followed by a restart.
  • Rollback: targets the previous known-good OS and is documented as retaining user data.
  • Repair: reinstalls SteamOS while attempting to preserve games and personal content; the wording is not a guarantee.
  • Re-image, Wipe Device & Install SteamOS, Factory Reset and Erase User Data: treat these as local-data removal operations and read the confirmation screen carefully.
  • USB requirement: recovery media needs an official image and an 8GB-or-larger USB key; ordinary updates and built-in rollback do not.
  • Desktop applications: software installed outside Flatpak may be removed by a future SteamOS update, so keep a reinstall plan for those applications.

The safe order is therefore update, restart and diagnose; then rollback if the new OS is the likely cause; then use USB repair if SteamOS must be reinstalled; and only then consider a full re-image or data erase when you accept the wipe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I choose any older SteamOS version for a rollback?

No. Valve’s rollback entry is described as the previous known-good OS, not as a catalog of every historical SteamOS release. If you need a different installation state, you are moving into recovery-media and reinstallation decisions rather than the built-in rollback path.

Do I need a USB drive to undo a normal SteamOS update?

No. The built-in rollback uses the Deck’s SteamOS menu and the Previous B entry. A USB drive becomes relevant when you need Repair SteamOS, recovery tools, or a re-image.

Why did a desktop application disappear after SteamOS updated?

Valve warns that software installed outside Flatpak may be wiped by a future SteamOS update. Keep installers and configuration notes for those applications separately so you can reinstall them if the update removes them.

Is Repair SteamOS the same as a factory reset?

No. Repair reinstalls SteamOS while attempting to preserve games and personal content. A re-image, wipe-and-install operation, factory reset, or erase-user-data action is destructive and can remove local information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a SteamOS update always keep my games and saves?

The documented data-retention statement applies to the built-in rollback to the last known-good OS. Do not treat it as a universal promise for every update, third-party application, or local file. Keep backups of important data, and note Valve’s warning that software installed outside Flatpak may be wiped by a future update.

What size USB drive do I need for Steam Deck recovery?

Valve specifies a USB key with a minimum capacity of 8GB for the recovery image. A recovery USB is needed for the USB repair and re-image workflow, not for routine SteamOS updates or the built-in Previous B rollback.

Does booting a recovery USB wipe the Steam Deck automatically?

No. Booting from the USB opens the recovery environment. You then choose an operation such as Repair SteamOS, recovery tools, or full re-image. Read the selected option carefully: re-image and wipe actions remove local data, while repair only attempts to preserve games and personal content.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Update through Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates, restart, and use Stable if reliability is your priority. If a recent OS update appears to have caused a system problem, try the built-in Previous B rollback before using recovery media. Repair SteamOS attempts to preserve content; re-image and erase choices are destructive. For USB recovery, use Valve’s current image and an 8GB-or-larger drive, and read every recovery option before confirming.
