Sometimes—but Steam does not guarantee that a demo save will carry over. The demo and full game are separate Steam applications, so the developer must make their save data compatible and provide a way for the full game to find it. Before uninstalling the demo or switching computers, check that game’s own instructions and preserve the save if needed.
Why don’t Steam demo saves always carry over?
A demo save carries over only when the game’s developer has arranged for the full release to recognize it. Steam itself does not automatically combine progress from every demo with its corresponding full game.

The association connects a demo to its full game, but it does not, by itself, make their save files interchangeable. The full game still needs access to the demo’s save and the ability to read it.
That can happen through shared Steam Cloud storage, compatible local save files, or a game-specific import feature. If the developer has not supported one of those routes—or if the demo and full game use incompatible save formats—the full game may start with no demo progress to load.

In other words, a demo being listed on Steam, connected to a full game, or showing a Steam Cloud icon does not prove that progress will transfer. The decisive information is whether the developer says that this particular game supports continuing from its demo.
How does Steam Cloud affect demo-save transfers?
Steam Cloud can make a demo save available to the full game, but only when the developer has configured the applications to share the right storage and the full game can read the saved data.
Steamworks documentation describes a “Shared cloud APP ID” setting for sharing storage between applications, and says this is “most commonly used to share saved games between a demo and a full game.” That is a developer-configured arrangement, not an automatic feature that applies to all Steam demos.
Steam Support describes cloud data in relation to a game’s App ID. So a save syncing for the demo does not necessarily mean that the full game can see it: the applications may have separate storage unless the developer has set up sharing. Even with shared storage, the full game needs to support the file’s format and version.

Before relying on Cloud, look for a direct statement in the game’s demo FAQ, full-game FAQ, store description, patch notes, or a developer announcement. A general Steam Cloud indicator is not a substitute for a title-specific promise.
What are the possible ways demo progress can continue?
There are three practical outcomes: the full game finds the save automatically, the player imports a local save using the game’s instructions, or the game does not support a transfer.

The table describes general possibilities, not a universal setup procedure. Games use different save locations and formats, and a transfer method for one title should not be applied to another without the developer’s guidance.
What should you check before uninstalling the demo?
Confirm how the specific game handles saves before removing its demo. If the save exists only on the local computer, uninstalling the demo or changing devices can put the only copy at risk.

- Find the developer’s transfer instructions. Check the game’s official FAQ, store description, patch notes, or announcement for explicit wording about demo progress, importing a save, or continuing in the full game.
- Identify whether the save is cloud-backed or local-only. Do not infer shared storage from a Steam Cloud icon alone. If the developer says the save is local, assume it may not be present on another device.
- Keep the demo installed until the full game detects the save. This avoids removing the demo’s local files before you know whether the full release can continue from them.
- If the instructions call for a manual transfer, preserve the original. Make a separate copy before copying or renaming a file, and use only the save location and filename specified for that title.
- Avoid overwriting an existing full-game save before import succeeds. Follow the game’s directions for choosing or importing the demo save, then confirm that the expected progress appears.
There is no safe all-games save-folder path to give here: locations can vary by game, operating system, and compatibility layer. A generic folder guess or a file copied from a different game’s instructions could fail to transfer the save, so use the developer’s directions.
Will the demo save follow you to another PC or Steam Deck?
Only if the game provides a working cloud or manual-transfer route. A local-only save on one computer does not automatically appear on another computer or on a Steam Deck.

The fact that both devices use Steam does not establish that a demo save will sync to the full game on the Deck. Look for the developer’s specific cross-device or save-transfer instructions before changing devices, and keep the original device’s demo save intact until the full game confirms it can load the progress.
If the game’s documentation does not say whether saves sync or transfer, do not assume that they do. The safest choice is to retain the existing save and ask the game’s developer or publisher for title-specific guidance.

What does a real carryover example look like?
The official Dinkum FAQ gives a direct yes: “You can continue your progress by loading your demo save file in the full game.” It also cautions that saved data may not be retained if Steam Cloud is not enabled, if the save exists only on the local PC and the game is uninstalled, or if no copy remains in Steam Cloud or on the device.
This example illustrates why a simple yes-or-no answer for all Steam games would be misleading. A game can support demo continuation while still depending on the player having a usable copy of the save. For another title, look for that title’s own stated instructions rather than assuming Dinkum’s behavior applies.

How can you troubleshoot a missing demo save?
If the full game starts without your demo progress, first establish whether the developer supports carryover and which transfer method the game requires. Then check the relevant save source without deleting or replacing files.
- No transfer prompt appears: Check the game’s instructions to see whether import is automatic or requires a menu option or manual step. Do not assume that a prompt is part of every supported transfer.
- The save appears on the old computer but not the new one: The save may be local-only. Return to the developer’s cross-device instructions and preserve the original copy while determining whether a supported transfer exists.
- The full game sees a file but cannot load it: Compatibility may depend on the game’s supported save format or version. Follow the developer’s steps; do not rename or modify files unless those steps specifically say to.
- You already uninstalled the demo: Check whether a local copy remains or whether the game’s cloud storage retained it. The Dinkum FAQ specifically warns that a local-only save can be lost when the game is uninstalled if no other copy remains.
If no supported transfer method is documented, the available facts do not establish a safe way to force one. Contact the game’s developer or publisher with the demo and full-game versions and the device involved; avoid experimenting on the only copy of the save.

Which source should you trust for a specific game?
Use the game developer’s or publisher’s explicit instructions as the final authority. Steamworks explains how developers can associate a demo with its full game and share cloud storage, but it does not promise that every title has been configured for carryover.
A title-specific FAQ or announcement that clearly says demo progress can continue is stronger evidence than assumptions based on the Steam Cloud icon, the shared Steam library, or another game’s behavior. If the official wording is unclear, ask whether the full release can load the demo save, whether the transfer is automatic or manual, and whether it requires cloud storage or the original device.

Can Steam Support restore a demo save I deleted?
The available Steamworks guidance explains developer-configured storage sharing, but does not establish a general Steam Support recovery service for deleted demo saves. Ask the game’s developer or publisher whether that title has a recovery option.
Do demo achievements or collectibles transfer with the save?
Save carryover does not establish that achievements, collectibles, or other account-level progress transfer too. Check the specific game’s FAQ for each kind of progress you care about.
Does buying the full game automatically remove the demo?
