Steam Families lets up to six close family members in a household share eligible games and manage child-account controls in one place. Create a family from Account Details > Family Management, invite members as adults or children, and remember the key limit: multiple people can play different games at once, but simultaneous play of the same game requires multiple family copies. The purchaser keeps ownership, and each player uses their own achievements and saves. Steam’s guide and FAQ explains the current rules and exceptions.

What is Steam Families?

Steam Families is Steam’s unified feature for sharing eligible games among family members and managing parental controls for child accounts. It replaced the earlier Steam Family Sharing and Family View features; Steam announced general availability on September 11, 2024. Steam’s launch announcement describes that transition.

A family can have up to six members. Steam describes the feature as intended for close family members in one household, not as a general sharing arrangement for any group of friends. Game ownership does not transfer: the account that bought a title remains its owner, while eligible members can access it through the family. Players use their own Steam accounts, achievements, and saved-game progress. Save behavior can vary by game.

It helps to think of Steam Families as access to eligible licenses, not a transfer of purchases or accounts. Each person signs in to their own Steam account, and access to another member’s eligible game does not make the player its owner. The owner’s library remains the source of the shared copy. This distinction also explains why the number of family members and the number of copies of a particular game are separate limits: a six-person family does not automatically have six simultaneous copies of every title.

How do I create a Steam Family and invite members?

Create and manage a family through Steam Client, a mobile device, or a web browser. The account creating or managing it assigns each invitee an adult or child role.

  1. Open the Steam Store page and select Account Details.
  2. Choose Family Management, then create a family.
  3. Invite the Steam accounts you want to add.
  4. Assign each person an Adult or Child role. Choose Child when an adult should manage that account’s game, feature, or playtime access; otherwise choose Adult.

Before inviting anyone, decide who needs to manage the household settings and who should receive parental restrictions. The role is not just a label: adults can manage invitations and restrictions, while child accounts can be subject to controls. Keep the family limit in mind as you plan invitations. Steam Families supports up to six members total, so each adult and child occupies one of those places.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam may reject an invitation if account activity does not indicate that the accounts belong to the same household, or if an account or family slot is still subject to a prior-family cooldown. When a cooldown blocks an attempt, Steam displays how much time remains. The household requirement and cooldowns are Steam’s eligibility rules, not optional settings. See Steam’s current Family FAQ for the official details.

If an invite does not work, avoid repeatedly sending invitations without checking the reason. First confirm that the intended members fit Steam’s household eligibility expectations. Then consider whether the account being invited recently belonged to another family or whether the space being filled was vacated recently. Steam’s displayed remaining cooldown helps distinguish a temporary eligibility block from a problem with the game library itself.

What is the difference between an adult and a child account?

Adults can manage family invitations and restrictions. Child accounts are designed for parental management: an adult can control game and feature access, set playtime limits, review reports, and respond to requests.

Capability Adult Child
Manage family invitations Can manage invitations Cannot manage invitations
Parental restrictions Can manage restrictions for child accounts Can be subject to restrictions managed by an adult
Controls available Can set game and feature access, playtime limits, and review reports for a child Access may be limited by game and feature permissions or hourly and daily playtime limits
Requests and reports Can review reports and requests for additional playtime or feature access Can request extra playtime or access to features
Leave family independently Can leave, subject to the applicable cooldown rules Cannot leave independently; an adult or Steam Support must remove the child

In practical terms, choose an adult role for a family member who should manage the family or use their account without child restrictions. Choose a child role when an adult should be able to manage access and playtime. Steam’s controls include access to games and features such as the Store, community, and chat, as well as hourly or daily playtime limits. Adults can review playtime reports and handle requests for extra time or access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These tools let adults tailor access rather than treating a child account as an adult account with a separate library. The adult can set the permissions and limits that fit the household, then use reports and requests to understand how the child account is being used. The available controls are managed through Family Management; they do not change who owns a shared game.

How do I configure a child account?

  1. Open Account Settings > Family Management.
  2. Select Manage.
  3. Expand the child’s entry and enable parental controls.
  4. Choose the game and feature permissions, playtime limits, and reporting or request settings you want.

Take time to review both game permissions and feature access. A family may want to restrict which games are available, limit access to Steam Store, community, or chat features, or set a limit by hour or day. Those are distinct aspects of the child controls, so setting one does not necessarily answer the other. Reports and requests provide a way for the adult to review playtime and consider a child’s request for more time or a feature.

An adult can use Steam’s child-account recovery option only after the child has been in the family for at least 30 days. That waiting period is a platform rule documented by Steam, not a recommended setup delay. If recovery might be needed, bear in mind that adding the child does not make this option immediately available.

Can two family members play the same Steam game at the same time?

Yes, but only if the family has enough copies of that game. Different family members can play different games from the shared library at the same time; a single copy does not provide two simultaneous sessions of the same title.

Situation What to expect
Two members choose different eligible games They can play at the same time.
Two members choose the same game and the family has one copy Only one can use that copy at a time. The other player must wait until a copy is available.
Two members choose the same game and the family has multiple copies Each can use an available copy; simultaneous play is possible when there are enough copies for the players.

If more than one member owns a title, Steam lets a player select which family member’s copy to use. When one copy is occupied, another copy may be available. If all eligible copies are in use, the client should identify who is playing; the player must wait or obtain another copy. Having a copy is not a guarantee that every combination of DLC or game configuration will behave identically: differences in DLC can affect whether a save works when switching between copies.

For example, if two family members want to play different eligible games, they can do so at the same time even if each game has only one family copy. If both want the same game, count the available copies of that specific title, not the number of people in the family. One copy means one available session of that title at a time; two copies can support two players at once, provided both copies are eligible and available.

When multiple members own a game, the choice of copy can matter if the players have different DLC configurations. A player switching between copies should not assume that every save will behave the same way in each configuration. The general sharing rule still concerns copies of the base title, but DLC differences may affect whether a save works. If a session is blocked, check whether another copy exists and is free before treating the title as unsupported.

Which games and DLC can Steam Families share?

Eligibility is set title by title, so a game appearing in a family member’s library does not guarantee that it can be shared. Steam lists several reasons a game or its DLC may be excluded, and publishers can change a title’s sharing availability.

  • Third-party requirements: A game that requires an additional third-party key, account, or subscription may not be shareable.
  • Free-to-play titles and purchased DLC: Steam’s current FAQ excludes free-to-play games and their purchased DLC from sharing.
  • Region restrictions: A title restricted in either member’s region may not be shared between them.
  • Operating-system restrictions: A game unsupported on the other member’s operating system may be unavailable to that member.
  • Publisher exclusions: A publisher may opt a title out of family sharing, and availability can change.
  • Private games: A game marked private by its owner is not shared with the family.

Check the individual game’s availability rather than assuming every library item or add-on is included. If a game or DLC is missing, first check its title-specific eligibility and publisher settings. Steam’s Family Sharing FAQ is the authoritative source for these exclusions.

The exclusions are useful to check in sequence. If the title depends on a third-party key, account, or subscription, that extra requirement may prevent it from being shared through Steam Families. If the game is free-to-play, Steam’s FAQ also excludes its purchased DLC from sharing. If two household members are in different regions, a regional restriction affecting either member can matter. And if one member uses an operating system the game does not support, the game may not be available on that member’s account even when another family member can play it.

Publisher decisions are another reason not to rely on a general assumption that a library item is shareable. A publisher can opt a game out, and availability can change. A private game is also not shared with the family while its owner has it marked private. If a title disappears or is unavailable, checking the title itself and its current publisher settings is more useful than assuming the family setup has failed.

Do I have to be online to play a shared game?

Not universally. Steam says a shared game can be played offline when that game supports Family Sharing, but individual titles may have their own technical or account requirements. Offline access therefore depends on the specific game; it is not a blanket promise for every shareable title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are two separate questions here: whether Steam Families allows a game to be shared, and whether that particular game can run offline. A title may be eligible for family access but still impose its own technical or account requirements. Check the title’s behavior rather than treating offline play as a feature guaranteed for every game in the family library.

What happens if I leave a Steam Family?

Adults can leave, but a one-year wait generally applies before they can create or join another family. Steam also applies a one-year cooldown to a vacated member slot, while allowing someone to rejoin their most recent family without waiting if that family has room.

  • Adult leaves: Steam requires the adult to wait one year from joining the previous family before creating or joining a different one.
  • Slot becomes available: The vacated slot has a one-year cooldown before it can be filled again.
  • Return to the previous family: A person may rejoin their most recent family without waiting if it has fewer than six members at that time.
  • Child account: A child cannot leave on their own; an adult or Steam Support must remove the child.

These limits can affect a move even when the person has already left the old family. If an invitation is blocked, check whether the account or the available slot is still cooling down; Steam reports the remaining time during the join attempt.

Plan a family change carefully. The one-year wait for an adult is measured from joining the previous family, and the vacated slot itself also has a cooldown. These are separate constraints: a person may be ready to join a different family while a particular slot is still unavailable, or a slot may be open while the person’s account remains subject to its own wait. Steam’s exception is specific: a person can rejoin their most recent family without waiting if that family has fewer than six members then.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Children do not have the same independent option to leave. An adult in the family or Steam Support must remove a child account. If you are organizing a move, account for that difference rather than assuming every member can leave and rejoin on the same terms.

What should I do when a shared game is unavailable?

Start by identifying whether the problem is a copy in use, a title-specific exclusion, or a family eligibility restriction. The Steam client identifies who is playing a locked game when the issue is that no eligible copy is free.

  1. If the game is in use, check whether another family copy is available. If none is available, wait for a copy to be freed or obtain another copy.
  2. If the game or DLC does not appear, check the exclusions: third-party requirements, free-to-play status, region or operating-system restrictions, publisher opt-out, and private status.
  3. If an invitation fails, check that the account is eligible under Steam’s household rules and whether the account or slot has a cooldown.
  4. If progress is affected after switching copies, account for the possibility that different DLC configurations affect a game’s save behavior.

A quick diagnosis can prevent confusing one limitation for another. A visible game that is locked because another member is using its only eligible copy is a copy-availability issue. A title that does not appear or cannot be shared may instead be excluded by a third-party requirement, publisher choice, privacy setting, regional restriction, or operating-system support. An invitation problem points to membership eligibility or cooldowns, not the number of game copies.

If the client identifies another player as using the game, check whether any other family member owns a copy that is available. If no eligible copy is free, the practical options are to wait or obtain another copy. If the concern is a missing DLC item, first verify that the game and DLC qualify for sharing; a base game being available does not establish that every related item is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam cautions that cheating or fraud by a family member in a shared game can lead to loss of family privileges and a VAC ban for the account associated with that shared game. Invite only trusted household members, and do not share account passwords. The warning is especially important because family sharing grants access to game licenses without making each player the purchaser.

Sharing a library is not a reason to let another person use your Steam account. Invite the person’s own account to the family instead, and only invite people you trust. Steam’s warning about cheating or fraud makes this a meaningful account and family risk: consequences can include loss of family privileges and a VAC ban for the account associated with the shared game.

When did Steam Families become available?

Steam announced that Steam Families was available to all users on September 11, 2024. The company presented it as the replacement for the earlier Family Sharing and Family View features, bringing shared games and controls over when family members can play into one system. Read the September 11, 2024 announcement.

Is there anything I need to buy or install to manage a Steam Family?

Steam’s official instructions do not require a separate piece of hardware, accessory, or paid setup tool to create or manage a family. Family management is available through Steam Client, a mobile device, or a web browser. The only purchase-related case in these sharing rules is that a family may need another copy of a particular game if multiple members want to play that same title simultaneously and there are not enough copies already available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is a title-specific decision, not a general requirement to buy equipment or a subscription for Steam Families. First check the game’s sharing eligibility and the family’s existing copies. If another copy is needed to support concurrent play, the family can decide whether that particular purchase makes sense; it is not necessary simply to create the family or play different games at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I invite a friend who lives in another household to my Steam Family?

Steam describes Families as intended for close family members in one household, and an invitation can fail when account activity does not indicate a shared household. Steam does not present the feature as a general-purpose way to share a library with any friend.

Does Steam Families change who owns the games?

No. The account that purchased a title remains its owner; family access lets other eligible members play without transferring that purchase.

Can an adult recover a child’s Steam account immediately after adding them?

No. Steam’s child-account recovery option becomes available only after the child has been in the family for at least 30 days.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can my family play two different games at once?

Yes. Family members can play different eligible games from the family library at the same time.

Can two people play the same game at the same time?

Only if the family has enough copies of that game for the players. With one copy, one player must wait until it is available; when multiple copies are available, Steam lets players select a family member’s copy.

Which games are currently eligible for Family Sharing?

Eligibility varies by title. Third-party keys, accounts, or subscriptions; free-to-play titles and their purchased DLC; region or operating-system restrictions; publisher opt-outs; and games marked private by their owner can prevent sharing. Check the specific title rather than assuming every library game is included.

Do I need to be online to play a shared game?

Not always. Steam says offline play is possible when a game supports Family Sharing, but individual games may have their own technical or account requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if the game I want to play from a Steam Family is in use?

The Steam client should identify who is playing it. Check whether another eligible family copy is available; if none is free, you must wait or obtain another copy.

Can a child leave a Steam Family on their own?

No. A child account cannot leave independently; an adult or Steam Support must remove the child.

Can I rejoin the family I just left?

Steam allows a person to rejoin their most recent family without waiting if that family has fewer than six members at the time. Joining or creating a different family generally involves a one-year wait, and a vacated slot also has a one-year cooldown.

Can every shared game be played offline?

No. Offline play depends on whether the specific game supports Family Sharing and on any technical or account requirements imposed by that title.

The Bottom Line

Steam Families supports up to six close household members, with separate accounts and ownership, eligible shared games, and parental controls for child accounts. Different games can be played at once, but the same title needs enough available copies for everyone playing. Check each game’s sharing eligibility, choose adult or child roles deliberately, and account for the one-year family and slot cooldowns before leaving.
