Steam Families lets up to six people in one household access each other’s eligible Steam games without merging accounts. Each person signs in with their own account, keeps their own ownership history, achievements and (where the game supports it) saves, while eligible purchases appear in a shared family-library area. It replaced Steam Family Sharing and Family View and became available to all users on September 11, 2024. The important limits are that publishers can exclude titles, one owned copy cannot support two simultaneous players of that same game, and household members may face one-year cooldowns when they leave or replace a family. The rules below reflect Valve’s current guidance as of October 29, 2026; check an individual game’s store page because sharing eligibility can change.
What is Steam Families?
Steam Families is Valve’s combined system for household game access and parental controls. It replaces the separate Steam Family Sharing and Family View features with one family-management area. A Steam Family can contain up to six members, but Valve describes it as a household feature for close family members, not a general-purpose group for unrelated friends.

The person who bought a game remains its owner. Other members receive access only while they belong to the family and only when the title meets Steam’s sharing rules. Steam may use account-activity signals to judge whether accounts appear to belong to the same household, so invitations should be limited to people who genuinely live as a family unit.
Steam Families does not require a special console, subscription device or physical product. It is an account feature that works through Steam on supported computers and operating systems.

How does Steam Families game sharing work?
After members join a family, Steam adds eligible titles owned by those members to a family-library section. A player launches a shared title from their own account, so achievements are credited to that player rather than to the purchaser. The purchaser’s ownership record stays intact, and joining does not transfer or duplicate the license.
- Create or join a family. An adult member manages invitations and the family’s settings. Children cannot administer the family themselves.
- Accept the invitation on each person’s own Steam account. Do not exchange passwords; every member should keep separate credentials.
- Open the family-library area in Steam. Eligible games owned by family members appear there alongside the member’s own purchases.
- Launch the game with the player’s account. The game records that player’s achievements and account-specific progress where the title supports the expected save model.
- Review the game’s store-page restrictions if it is missing. A title can be excluded by its publisher or blocked by account, region, operating-system or third-party-service requirements.
Valve says a shared game can be played offline when that game supports Family Sharing. Offline availability is therefore a title-level capability, not a guarantee for every game in the family library.

Most ordinary, eligible paid Steam games can appear in the family library. The purchaser retains ownership, while other members receive access through the family relationship.
| Content or feature | How it works | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible purchased games | Appear in the family-library section for other members. | The publisher can mark a title unavailable. |
| Achievements | Earned on the account that plays the game. | They are not added to the purchaser’s profile. |
| Saved progress | Uses the player’s account-specific progress model when supported by the game. | Save behavior is set by the individual title. |
| Shareable DLC | Can accompany the family member’s copy that is launched. | DLC may be restricted, and different owned copies can include different DLC. |
| Offline play | Possible for a shared game that supports Family Sharing. | Not every title supports offline Family Sharing. |
When several family members own the same game, Steam may ask which member’s copy should be used. That choice can matter when the copies have different downloadable content: changing to another copy may affect whether existing saves work correctly.
Can you share every Steam game?
No. Steam Families provides broad access to eligible content, not universal entitlement sharing. A game or DLC can be unavailable for any of the following reasons:
- Third-party requirements: the title requires an external key, account or subscription that cannot be shared through Steam.
- Free-to-play rules: free-to-play games and DLC bought for a free-to-play game are excluded from family sharing.
- Regional restrictions: the game is restricted in the region of either the owner or the family member.
- Operating-system incompatibility: the other member’s operating system is not supported by the title.
- Publisher exclusion: the publisher has explicitly marked the game unavailable for Family Sharing.
- Private ownership: the original owner marked the game private.
These limits explain why a title can be visible to one member but absent for another. The fastest check is the game’s current Steam store page and the account’s region and operating-system compatibility. Publishers can change eligibility, so an older sharing result is not a permanent guarantee.

Can two people play the same Steam game at once?
One family-owned copy supports one active player at a time. If two people want to play the same title simultaneously, the family needs two owned copies. The copies can be owned by different family members.
Different games do not create that conflict. For example, if the family owns one copy of Portal 2 and one copy of Half-Life, one member can play Portal 2 while another plays Half-Life. If both members try to play Portal 2 at the same time and the family owns only one copy, the second player cannot start an independent session from that license.
When multiple copies exist, Steam can let the player select which family member’s copy to launch. Check DLC ownership before switching, because a save created with one copy’s add-ons may not behave correctly when opened against another copy without those add-ons.
How do DLC, saves and achievements behave?
Achievements belong to the account that earns them. A child or adult playing a shared game therefore builds a separate achievement record rather than changing the owner’s profile.
Save handling depends on the game. Steam Families does not turn every title into a single shared save slot; the game’s own account and cloud-save design determines whether progress is isolated, synchronized or subject to other restrictions. Before switching between copies with different DLC, confirm that the required add-ons are available to the account opening the save.
Publisher-marked, shareable DLC can accompany the family member’s copy that is launched. DLC is not automatically universal: free-to-play DLC, excluded add-ons, region-locked content and DLC tied to an external account can remain unavailable.

How do Steam Families parental controls work?
Steam Families separates members into adult and child roles. Adults manage invitations, restrictions and approvals; children cannot manage the family themselves.
Controls adults can set
- Allow or restrict individual games.
- Restrict access to the Steam Store, Community or Friends Chat.
- Set hourly or daily playtime limits.
- View playtime reports.
- Approve or deny requests for extra playtime or access to restricted features.
These controls apply to the child account rather than converting the adult’s purchases into the child’s ownership. A child can ask an adult to pay for a shopping cart. If the adult approves, the purchases are added to the child’s account; they do not become shared ownership of the adult’s library.
Valve also provides an adult-assisted account-recovery option after the child account has been a family member for at least 30 days. That waiting period is separate from the family’s membership and slot cooldown rules.
What happens when someone leaves a Steam Family?
Leaving can have long-term consequences. An adult generally must wait one year from joining the previous family before creating or joining another one. A vacated family slot also has a one-year cooldown before a new member can occupy it.
If someone leaves accidentally, Steam says that person can rejoin their last family without waiting when that family has fewer than six members. Children cannot remove themselves; an adult or Steam Support must remove them.
Plan membership changes before sending invitations. A mistaken departure can prevent the account, or the empty slot, from being used elsewhere for a year even though the family has room in practical terms.

Why can’t a family member play a shared game?
Start by identifying whether the problem is eligibility, account status or simultaneous use. Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the game is eligible. Look for third-party account or subscription requirements, free-to-play status, publisher exclusions and private-game status.
- Check both regions. A regional restriction affecting either account can block access.
- Check the operating system. The member’s device must support the game’s listed operating system.
- Check whether another member is using the only copy. A second player needs another owned copy for simultaneous play.
- Check DLC ownership. A save may depend on add-ons included with a different family member’s copy.
- Check family membership. The account must still be in the family, and an adult must approve a child’s restricted-game or feature request.
- Check privacy status. A title marked private by its owner will not be shared.
If the title is eligible but still missing, review the game’s current store listing and Steam’s family settings. Because publishers can alter sharing support, a previous successful launch does not prove that the same title remains shareable today.
Is Steam Families safe for household sharing?
Invite only people you trust. Valve warns that cheating or fraud by a family member while using another member’s shared game can cause family privileges to be revoked and can expose the game owner to a VAC ban. The owner’s account is not insulated from another member’s misconduct simply because the other person launched the game.
Use separate accounts and never give a family member your Steam password. Account sharing outside the family feature removes the account separation that protects ownership records, achievements and parental controls.
Should you buy a second copy or use Remote Play Together?
Steam Families is designed for household library access. Buying a second copy is the cleanest solution when two people need independent, simultaneous sessions of the same game and the family has only one eligible license. Remote Play Together is a separate Steam feature, not another name for Steam Families; it streams a host’s session and depends on the game supporting that feature.
| Option | Each player needs a copy? | Independent simultaneous play | Separate saves and achievements | Main restrictions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Families | No for one player at a time; two copies for the same game at once. | Yes for different games; same game requires two copies. | Achievements are account-specific; save behavior depends on the title. | Family Sharing support, DLC, region, operating-system, publisher and third-party-account rules apply. |
| Buy a second copy | Yes, each player has a license. | Yes, subject to the game’s normal multiplayer and account rules. | Each account keeps its own records. | Requires purchasing another license; game-specific requirements still apply. |
| Remote Play Together | Usually only the host needs the game, if the title supports the feature. | No separate independent sessions; guests join the host’s streamed session. | Progress generally follows the host’s running session and the game’s own design. | Requires a compatible title and a suitable remote-play connection. |
Use Steam Families when the goal is to let household members browse and play eligible games from a shared library. Choose another copy when simultaneous independent play matters more than avoiding a second purchase. Choose Remote Play Together only when a supported game’s hosted-session model fits what you want to do.

What should you check before inviting six people?
- Keep the group to close household members; Valve does not describe Steam Families as an unrestricted friend-sharing pool.
- Decide which adults will manage invitations, restrictions and purchase requests.
- Review the store pages for the games your household actually plans to share.
- Identify any titles that require two copies for simultaneous play.
- Check regional and operating-system compatibility for every intended player.
- Explain the one-year account and slot cooldowns before anyone leaves or is removed.
- Agree on password security and cheating rules, because misuse can affect the owner’s account and family privileges.
How we distinguish the options
The practical choice follows six criteria: whether every player needs a license, whether two people can play independently at the same time, whether the game supports Family Sharing or Remote Play Together, whether saves and achievements remain separate, whether DLC or regional and third-party restrictions apply, and whether parental controls are required. Those criteria make Steam Families the household-library solution, a second purchase the straightforward answer for same-game concurrency, and Remote Play Together a separate hosted-session option.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Steam Family have more than six people if some are children?
No. Valve’s stated maximum is six members total, counting adults and children together. A child account uses one of those six places rather than receiving an additional child-only allowance.
Recommended Free Tools
Can a child request a game without owning the adult’s library?
Yes. A child can submit a shopping-cart payment request to an adult. If approved, the purchased items are added to the child’s own account, while the adult’s existing games remain owned by the adult.
Does Steam Families work when a family member is traveling?
The feature is intended for a household, and Steam may evaluate account-activity signals when deciding whether accounts appear to belong together. A shared game can be played offline only when that title supports Family Sharing, so travel access is not guaranteed for every game.
What if two owned copies of a game include different expansions?
Steam may let the player choose which member’s copy to launch. Switching to a copy without the expansion used by an existing save can affect whether that save opens correctly, so keep track of which copy supplies the required DLC.
Can a family member use my password to make sharing easier?
No. Steam Families is built around separate accounts and does not require password sharing. Giving out credentials creates avoidable security and ownership risks, especially because misconduct in a shared game can affect the owner.
