Steam Frame is Valve’s wireless, SteamOS-based VR headset, and its main advantage is unusually simple: it is built to stream a PC’s Steam library without a cable while also running a selection of games locally. At $1,059 for 256GB or $1,299 for 1TB, it is far more expensive than a Quest 3, and demanding standalone play can last only about one to two hours according to current reviews. The hardware is light, balanced and easy to set up, but the value depends on having a capable gaming PC and a reliable network. For PC-streaming users, the 256GB model is the sensible choice; standalone-first buyers must weigh the larger storage option against a smaller, newer game catalog.
What is Steam Frame?
Steam Frame is a wireless VR headset that runs SteamOS 3 on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. It can display a user’s Steam library in two ways: games installed on the headset run through Valve’s Proton/FEX compatibility layers, while demanding PC titles stream from a computer over a dedicated wireless connection or the user’s local network.

Valve ships a 6GHz wireless adapter for direct PC connectivity. The headset also has Wi-Fi 7, dual-radio networking and a Multi-Link Streaming system that can combine the adapter with local Wi-Fi and switch links in real time. Eye tracking enables foveated streaming; Valve says concentrating detail where the user is looking can deliver more than a 10× improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth. Those are Valve’s claims, and actual streaming quality still depends on the host PC, wireless conditions and network setup.
How much does Steam Frame cost?
Valve lists two storage configurations. Prices below are the company’s 2026 US figures; regional prices are also listed for Canada, the UK, European Union, Australia and Poland.

What hardware do you get?
The headset uses 2160×2160 LCD panels per eye, pancake lenses, a 72–144Hz refresh range (144Hz is experimental), up to a 110-degree field of view and a target 60–70mm interpupillary-distance range. Valve specifies a 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 ARM64 chip, 16GB of unified LPDDR5X memory, UFS storage, a microSD slot and a 21.6Wh rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

Tracking comes from four outward-facing monochrome cameras, two inward-facing eye-tracking cameras and infrared illuminators for low-light tracking and passthrough. Passthrough is monochrome from the headset itself, unlike color-passthrough competitors.
Each included controller has six-degrees-of-freedom tracking, magnetic TMR thumbsticks with capacitive touch, ABXY buttons, a d-pad, triggers, bumpers, haptics and capacitive finger sensing. Valve rates the replaceable AA battery in each controller for approximately 40 hours.

Is Steam Frame comfortable and easy to set up?
Shacknews praised the headset’s light, comfortable design and straightforward setup, rating it 8/10. PC Gamer likewise highlighted the balanced weight and said inside-out tracking maintained room boundaries consistently during weeks of use. PC Gamer measured about 403g on its own scale, compared with Valve’s 440g specification; the difference reflects measurement method rather than a revised official weight.
Valve’s optional Ergonomic Accessories Kit adds controller straps, a longer light blocker and a top headset strap. PC Gamer considered it useful but not essential. The headset does not require external base stations, and ordinary room-scale tracking is handled by its onboard cameras.
How does wireless PC streaming work?
For the lowest-friction PC setup, connect Valve’s included adapter to the gaming computer, install the required Steam software, and pair the headset through Steam. The adapter creates a direct 6GHz Wi-Fi 6E link. Multi-Link Streaming can add the home Wi-Fi connection and choose between links as conditions change.
- Prepare the host PC. Install Steam, sign in to the account containing the games and connect the computer to power. The PC still performs the rendering for streamed titles.
- Connect the wireless adapter. Place it where it has a clear path to the headset and avoid enclosing it behind other equipment.
- Pair and update. Complete Steam Frame’s on-screen setup, guardian boundary and eye-tracking calibration. Keep headset firmware and Steam current.
- Choose a game. Steam separates locally installed titles from games available through PC streaming. Launch a streamed title from the headset interface.
Wireless convenience does not remove the normal requirements of PC VR. A weak host computer, congested Wi-Fi, distance, interference or an unstable internet connection can produce compression, delay or disconnections. The dedicated adapter helps the local link, but it cannot make an underpowered PC render a demanding game.

Can Steam Frame play Steam games without a PC?
Yes, but only games that run on the headset’s ARM-based SteamOS environment. Valve’s Standalone Verified label identifies titles it considers acceptable for local operation. Valve reported more than 100 Standalone Verified games at launch, and the headset can install them directly to internal or microSD storage.
Steam Frame also includes a redeemable copy of Half-Life: Alyx, although that title is a PC-streaming experience rather than a demanding native standalone release. Compatibility is not universal: Proton/FEX support and game-specific updates determine whether a Windows or Linux title works locally, and firmware or game changes can alter results.

What games work well untethered?
Shacknews found Half-Life: Alyx, Beat Saber, Superhot and Skyrim enjoyable without a cable. Its larger criticism was not basic compatibility but the age of many standout experiences: the current library contains strong older releases while offering fewer new VR exclusives than a mature standalone platform.
How long does the Steam Frame battery last?
Local play is the limiting case. Shacknews and PC Gamer both describe demanding standalone sessions as roughly one to two hours, with high-refresh rendering draining the battery particularly quickly. The official capacity is 21.6Wh, and Valve specifies charging up to 45W through the rear USB-C port, but Valve does not publish a single runtime figure that applies to every game or refresh setting.

Streaming can be more economical because the PC performs the heavy rendering, yet battery life still varies with radio conditions, display refresh, eye tracking and software load. Treat one to two hours as review evidence for demanding local games, not a guaranteed figure for every title.
Is Steam Frame better than Quest 3?
There is no universal winner. Steam Frame is the more focused choice for people who already own a substantial Steam library and want a dedicated wireless PC link; Quest 3 has the broader established standalone ecosystem and color passthrough at a much lower commonly cited price.

Shacknews reviewer David Craddock concluded, “I’d still rather have a Steam Frame than a Meta Quest 3, though.” That is a preference for Steam integration and hardware convenience, not proof that Steam Frame offers better value for every buyer. PC Gamer called it its best all-round VR headset used to date while warning that the price makes it a difficult first headset or an upgrade from Quest 3.

Choose 256GB if you stream
The 256GB version is the better fit when most large games remain on a PC. Streamed titles consume little headset storage, and the microSD slot provides an expansion path for smaller native games.

Choose 1TB if local play is central
The 1TB model costs $240 more and gives substantially more room for locally installed games, updates and media. It makes sense only if you expect to use Steam Frame as a standalone device often enough to avoid repeatedly moving installations; the shorter battery life and smaller new-release catalog still apply.
What are Steam Frame’s biggest drawbacks?
- Price: At $1,059, the entry model is a premium purchase and the 1TB model reaches $1,299.
- Battery: Demanding local games can reduce usable sessions to around one or two hours.
- Software maturity: The Verified list is growing, but current reviews report a shortage of new VR exclusives.
- Network dependence: Streaming quality follows the host PC and wireless environment.
- Monochrome passthrough: The built-in view of the room lacks the color experience offered by Quest 3.
Is Steam Frame worth it?
Steam Frame is worth considering for an existing PC VR player who values a balanced, cable-free headset, owns a capable gaming PC and wants Steam to remain the center of the experience. The 256GB model is the rational purchase for that audience. It is harder to recommend as a first VR headset or as a Quest 3 upgrade when standalone exclusives, color passthrough, long local sessions or low cost matter most. The 1TB version is justified mainly by frequent standalone use, not by streaming alone.

Does Steam Frame require base stations?
No. Four outward-facing cameras provide inside-out positional tracking, so external base stations are not required. You still need a clear play area and must complete the headset’s boundary setup.
Can I expand Steam Frame storage later?
Yes. Valve lists a microSD slot in addition to the built-in 256GB or 1TB UFS storage. Expansion helps with local installations, but it does not increase battery life or add compatibility to unsupported games.
Does Steam Frame include a PC adapter?
Yes. Valve includes a 6GHz wireless adapter intended for a direct PC-to-headset link. Multi-Link Streaming can also use the local Wi-Fi connection, so the adapter is not the only networking path.
Is Steam Frame’s passthrough in color?
No. The headset’s built-in passthrough is monochrome because its outward-facing tracking cameras are monochrome. A future expansion camera has been reported, but availability and compatibility should be verified with Valve before purchase.
