How do I set up Steam Frame?
On first startup, follow the Guided Tour, connect to Wi-Fi, sign in to Steam, pair the controllers, and install every update offered by the headset. The tour explains the main controls and can be replayed later from Help in the Quick Access Menu.

- Confirm that the included controllers have paired automatically. If they have not, open Settings > Controller > Add Controller.
- Define a clear Playspace before launching an immersive title. Use the Playspace menu to redo the scan, adjust floor height, or recenter your position.
The Chaperone boundary is the grid that appears as you approach the edge of the defined area. Redo the Playspace setup whenever furniture, lighting, or your play area changes.
How do I stream PC games to Steam Frame?
Streaming uses the host PC’s Steam Library and the dedicated wireless adapter. Pair the included 6GHz adapter, place it where it has a clear line of sight to the headset, and keep the playspace roughly within 20 feet of it. In the headset Library, select Stream from <host PC name>.

How far can I be from the Steam Frame wireless adapter?
Valve’s current guidance is approximately 20 feet from the wireless adapter to the playspace. Treat that as a practical target rather than a guaranteed radius: walls, furniture, competing wireless traffic, and the adapter’s placement can reduce reliability.
- Keep the adapter in clear line of sight.
- Place it near the center of the area where you play rather than at the far end of a room.
- Keep the host PC’s network connection stable and avoid unnecessary obstructions between headset and adapter.
- If the stream becomes unstable, move closer before changing game settings; distance and interference are often the simplest causes.
Can Steam Frame run games without a PC?
Yes, when the title has a compatible native build. Standalone play requires installing that title on the headset, but it does not require a nearby host PC or an active network connection once the game is installed. Streaming and standalone play are different Library paths: streaming uses the PC’s hardware and Library, while standalone play uses storage on the headset and only works for titles marked as compatible. How do I fix Steam Frame tracking?
Steam Frame combines built-in cameras and sensors with controller IMU data. Tracking errors are usually worth troubleshooting as an environment or power issue before changing software settings.

- Remove stickers, covers, or accessories that obscure cameras or sensors.
- Turn off bright LED sources and reduce infrared interference.
- Cover or move reflective surfaces that can confuse camera-based tracking.
- Restart the headset, controllers, and SteamVR when tracking remains inaccurate.
- Check controller batteries and replace or recharge depleted cells.
- Redo the Playspace scan and recenter after changing lighting or furniture.
How do I pair controllers and other accessories?
Controllers should pair automatically during first use. If a controller drops out, use Settings > Controller > Add Controller. The same menu can add a gamepad; other Bluetooth peripherals are paired from Settings > Bluetooth.
If a controller is unavailable, press the headset’s Aux button to invoke a head-directed cursor for basic navigation. It is a fallback for menus and settings, not a replacement for motion controls in games.

How do I clean Steam Frame lenses safely?
Start with a dry microfiber cloth and light pressure. If residue remains, put a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on the cloth, never directly on the lenses. Avoid water and frequent alcohol use, and store the headset in a cool, dry place with the lenses turned away from windows or other bright light sources.
- Power down or remove the headset so you can see the lens surface clearly.
- Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth with gentle strokes.
- For stubborn marks, lightly dampen a corner of the cloth with isopropyl alcohol.

Does Steam Frame need Wi-Fi for every game?
No. A compatible title installed for standalone play can run without a nearby host PC or network connection. Wi-Fi and the wireless adapter are needed for PC streaming and for services or downloads that require network access.

Can I use a gamepad instead of Steam Frame controllers?
Yes. Add a compatible gamepad through Settings > Controller. Bluetooth peripherals that are not gamepads are paired separately through Settings > Bluetooth.
Why is my Steam Frame stream blurry even though the headset is close?
Check the adapter’s line of sight, the host PC’s network connection, and nearby wireless interference. A short distance alone does not guarantee a stable stream if the adapter is blocked or the local network is congested.
What happens if I format a microSD card in Steam Frame?
Formatting prepares the card for headset library storage and can erase existing data on that card. Back up anything you need before using Settings > Storage to format it.
