You can install and play the participating game during the event, usually from Thursday at 10 a.m. Pacific to Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific, but the exact times on that game’s event page control. When the event ends, Steam removes the free package. You may still see the game in your library, but continuing to play requires buying it.
Saves, achievements, reviews, trading cards, and refunds work differently. Save and achievement carryover are not guaranteed across all games; check the developer’s current guidance. A purchase made after the event is covered by Steam’s normal refund policy, not by a special Free Weekend refund rule.

What a Steam Free Weekend actually gives you
Valve describes a Free Weekend as a time-limited promotion that lets players temporarily access and play an eligible game for free, typically over a long four-day weekend. The promotion opens the game’s base package through the existing Steam app and depots. It is a trial window, not a permanent license.

The usual schedule is only a guide
Steam’s general documentation says the common schedule runs from Thursday at 10 a.m. Pacific to Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific. That is a typical pattern, not a promise for every event. A publisher can set different dates or times, and the event listing for the particular game is authoritative. Check the start and end time shown on the game’s store or event page, including the time zone, before planning a long session.

What happens at the end
Steam states that once a Free Weekend ends, the free package is automatically removed. The game can remain visible in your library because you participated, and you can uninstall its files, but the temporary entitlement no longer lets you launch the full game. Buying the full version is required to continue playing.
Free Weekend versus a demo or free-to-play game

A Free Weekend therefore should not be treated as a free-to-keep giveaway or as proof that the game will remain playable without a purchase.
How to join and avoid missing the cutoff
- Open the event listing. Confirm that the promotion is a Free Weekend and note the displayed start and end times. Do not rely only on the phrase “this weekend.”
- Start the installation while the event is active. The event may expose the same base-game content as a normal purchase, but additional downloadable content, editions, or account services can have separate requirements.
- Launch before the deadline. A game that is already installed does not create a permanent right to play. Steam can deactivate the free package when the event closes.
- Leave time for updates. A large download or patch near the end of the event can consume the remaining trial window.
- Record your decision point. If you are considering a purchase, note the current price, any event discount, and the exact end time so you can decide before access disappears.
The event is temporary even if the library entry remains. Seeing an install button or a familiar game tile after Monday does not by itself mean the Free Weekend entitlement is still active.
Will your save carry over if you buy the game?
Sometimes, but Steam does not promise universal Free Weekend save transfer. Whether progress survives depends on how the individual game stores and synchronizes data and on the developer’s implementation.

Steam Cloud is game-dependent
Steam Cloud can store game data, including save games, but each game chooses whether and how to use it. A game may support cloud synchronization fully, partially, or not at all. Steam also warns that lost cloud data is unlikely to be recoverable. Cloud availability therefore is not a blanket guarantee that a Free Weekend save will appear after purchase.
What to check before you invest hours
- Read the game’s current support article, event announcement, or developer post for an explicit statement about Free Weekend progress.
- Check whether the game identifies Steam Cloud as supported and whether synchronization has completed before you quit.
- If the game offers an in-game backup or export, use it. Keep any local backup in a safe location rather than overwriting it during troubleshooting.
- Take note of the account and platform you used. A save tied to a different account, launcher, or platform may not be recognized even when the game itself is the same.
After purchasing
Install or launch the purchased version with the same Steam account and allow any available synchronization to finish. If the save is missing, do not repeatedly create new saves that could overwrite the only local copy. Close the game, check the developer’s support instructions, and preserve the existing save files before attempting repairs. Because Steam says lost cloud data is unlikely to be recoverable, prevention and a verified backup matter more than assuming the cloud will fix every problem.
Do achievements earned during a Free Weekend stay?
Steam’s general Free Weekend information does not promise that achievements earned during the event will persist or unlock automatically after you buy the game. Achievement behavior is therefore game-specific. Some developers may explain their handling in a current announcement or support page; others may not.

- Treat the achievement as unconfirmed until the game’s developer documents what happens after purchase.
- Do not assume that an achievement visible on your profile will necessarily be re-awarded, or that an achievement absent during the event is permanently lost.
- If achievements are important to your decision, ask the developer through the game’s official support channel before spending time on completion goals.
The absence of a platform-wide promise means neither “all achievements transfer” nor “all achievements are deleted” is a reliable general rule.

Reviews and trading cards during the event
Reviews are allowed but treated differently
Free Weekend participants may post reviews. Steam categorizes those reviews as coming from a non-Steam purchase, so they do not affect the game’s review score unless the player later buys the game. Your written feedback can remain useful to readers, but it is not counted in the score in the same way as a paid purchase review.
Trading-card drops are restricted
Trading cards do not drop for Free Weekend players unless they purchased the game on Steam or activated a key. Installing and playing during the temporary event alone is not enough to generate card drops.

Can you refund the game after buying it?
The Free Weekend itself is not a paid transaction, so there is nothing to refund from the event. If you buy the game afterward, that purchase is evaluated under Steam’s standard refund policy and its exceptions.
The standard conditions

Steam’s refund page was last updated April 23, 2024; check the current policy when you purchase because terms and exceptions can change. The two-week and two-hour rules are the standard offer, not an absolute promise that every request meeting them will bypass all policy exceptions.

How the Free Weekend relates to the refund clock
Steam’s policy describes refunds for paid purchases. The event itself is temporary access, not a purchase. Steam’s general Free Weekend documentation does not state that event playtime automatically consumes the two-hour allowance on a later purchase, nor does it promise that such playtime is ignored in every game-specific situation. Do not buy with the intention of using refunds as an unlimited trial: Steam says refunds are designed to remove purchase risk, not to provide free games.
A sensible purchase sequence
- During the event, decide whether the game’s core loop, performance, and content suit you.
- Before paying, read the current store price and any discount terms and verify that the game’s developer has addressed save or achievement carryover if those matter to you.
- If you purchase, keep the receipt date and monitor your paid playtime so you understand where you stand under the current policy.
- Submit a refund request through Steam’s support flow if the purchase qualifies, explaining the relevant facts accurately. Requests outside the standard conditions can still be reviewed, but they are discretionary.
What to evaluate before buying
Trying a game for free answers only part of the purchase question. Use the event to evaluate the specific factors that remain relevant after access ends.
- Event cutoff: Can you finish a meaningful test before the listed end time?
- Post-event value: Would you still enjoy the game after the temporary access disappears, including its normal solo or multiplayer requirements?
- Progress continuity: Has the developer explicitly confirmed save carryover for this title?
- Achievement expectations: Is there a clear statement about persistence, or are you willing to treat event achievements as uncertain?
- Total price: What is the actual paid price in your region, and does the discount end with the event?
- Refund eligibility: If you buy, can you make a decision within Steam’s current two-week and under-two-hour framework?
No single Free Weekend policy answers all six questions. The event supplies temporary access; the game’s developer controls many details of saves and achievements, while Steam’s current platform policies govern reviews, cards, and refunds.

The game is installed but will not launch after the event
Check the event’s published end time first. If the deadline has passed, Steam may have removed the free package even though the files and library entry remain. Continued play requires a purchase.

Your save is missing after purchase
Stop creating new saves, verify that you are using the same Steam account, and check the game’s cloud status and developer support instructions. Preserve any local files before attempting a reinstall or other repair. Steam cautions that lost cloud data is unlikely to be recoverable.
An achievement did not appear
There is no universal Steam guarantee for Free Weekend achievement persistence. Look for a current statement from the developer and report the issue through the game’s support channel if the developer documents a different behavior.
Your review is not changing the score
That is expected for a Free Weekend review. Steam categorizes it as a non-Steam purchase review and excludes it from the review score unless you buy the game.

Free Weekend play does not produce trading-card drops. Steam requires a Steam purchase or activated key for those drops to become available under the game’s normal rules.
Bottom line for a Free Weekend decision
Use a Steam Free Weekend as a time-limited test of the actual game, not as a permanent license. Confirm the exact event deadline, verify save and achievement behavior with the developer, and treat reviews and trading cards according to Steam’s stated restrictions. If you buy afterward, judge the purchase under the current paid-game refund policy: normally a request within 14 days and with under two hours of playtime, subject to exceptions and review.
