Steam Game Backups: Restore Installs With Fewer Downloads

Steam’s built-in Backup and Restore Games workflow lets you save installed game content, then restore it through Steam on the destination installation instead of downloading the entire original installation again. It can reduce how much game data you need to fetch, but it does not guarantee a completely download-free restore: updates or missing files may still require Steam to connect.

Which method should you use?

Choose based on where the game files are now and whether you need a reusable archive. A stored backup is for keeping generated files aside and restoring them later. Steam’s migration procedure is for moving an existing installation and its files to another machine or drive. Local network game transfer is for copying installation content from another PC on the same network.

Method Where the source data lives What it does Needs another PC? Separate save check?
Backup and Restore Games Backup files you have retained and can access from the destination PC Steam restores game content from the backup files. No Yes. Check the game’s save and Steam Cloud support separately.
Move a Steam Installation and Games The existing Steam installation and its game files Uses Steam’s documented migration procedure to move an installation and games. Usually the source installation itself, rather than a second running PC on the LAN Yes. Do not assume a game-data move also covers saves.
Local Network Game Transfers Another PC with the game installed, on the same local network Steam transfers installation content over the network. Yes, on the same local network Yes. Valve says this transfer does not send local saves or configuration files.

These methods reuse existing installation data in different ways; they are not interchangeable names for one feature. None is a universal promise of zero network traffic. Select a stored backup when you want to disconnect the source machine after the copy, a migration when the original installation is still intact, and a LAN transfer when another nearby PC can act as the source.

What to check before creating a backup

A little preparation prevents the most common surprise: discovering that a title was not in a complete, current state when the backup was made.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Wait for downloads to finish. Let every intended game complete its installation and updates. Steam Support’s backup eligibility guidance concerns fully downloaded and updated content.
  • Decide what must be preserved. Installed game content is only one category of data. Make a separate plan for local saves and configuration files, especially for a game without confirmed Steam Cloud support.
  • Choose a destination you can keep accessible. The backup destination can be the computer’s storage or removable storage that you can reconnect to the destination PC. The important requirement is enough available space for Steam’s generated files and a way to keep the complete set together.
  • Plan a test. If the copy will become your only reusable installation, schedule a restore test while the original game still works. Valve recommends testing backup files after creation to confirm their integrity for future reinstallation.

You do not need a particular drive brand or special repair utility. Steam’s backup command is built into the client. An external SSD, external hard drive, or suitably sized USB drive is simply an optional place to retain or transport the files.

How do you back up installed Steam games?

Use Steam’s native backup workflow when you want files you can retain and later point Steam to during restoration. The selected games should be fully downloaded and updated before you start.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Finish downloads and updates. Confirm that each game you intend to include has finished downloading and updating. Do not start the backup while Steam still shows an installation, patch, or queued update for that title.
  2. Open the backup workflow. In the Steam client, open Backup and Restore Games, then choose Backup currently installed games. Client menus can change, so confirm the labels in your current installation rather than relying on an old screenshot.
  3. Select the games. Choose the installed titles you want to include. Review the selection so that you do not accidentally omit a game you will need on the destination machine.
  4. Select a destination. Choose a location with enough available space and complete Steam’s prompts. Steam creates the backup files there; the destination is not merely a shortcut to the original library.
  5. Keep the generated files together. Steam’s instructions allow the backup to be copied or moved. If you use removable storage, copy the complete generated set and keep it in one organized location. Avoid deleting or rearranging files until you have completed a restore test.
  6. Record where the backup lives. A backup that cannot be located is not useful during restoration. Label an external drive or note its folder so you can identify the correct files later.
  7. Test the backup. Valve’s guidance recommends testing backup files after creation to confirm their integrity for future reinstallation. A progress bar reaching completion proves only that Steam finished creating files; it does not prove that a future restore will be usable.

The files can be copied or moved to another storage device after creation. Steam does not require buying an SSD, hard drive, or flash drive, and no particular manufacturer is required. Choose storage based on what you already own and can safely retain; the backup command itself is a Steam feature rather than a paid add-on.

How do you restore a Steam game from backup?

Make the backup files available to the destination PC, then use Steam’s restore option so the client can process them as a previous backup.

  1. Connect or mount the storage. If the files are on an external drive, connect it to the destination PC. If you copied them to local storage, make sure you know the folder containing the generated backup.
  2. Open Steam’s workflow. On the destination installation, open Backup and Restore Games.
  3. Choose the restore command. Select Restore a previous backup and browse to the backup files. Point Steam to the files created by the backup process, not simply to an arbitrary game-content folder.
  4. Follow the installation prompts. Let Steam process the backup and complete the installation steps it displays. Keep the storage connected until Steam reports that the restore is complete.
  5. Launch the restored game. Test the title rather than assuming the appearance of a restored directory means the installation is ready. Check that the expected files load and that the game reaches its normal start screen.
  6. Verify if necessary. If files appear incomplete or the game does not work as expected, use Steam’s Verify integrity of game files function for that title.

Verification checks the installed game files and can cause Steam to reacquire missing or failed files. It is therefore not a guaranteed offline step. Likewise, manually dropping files into a game directory is not equivalent to Steam’s documented restore workflow and can leave the client without the state it expects.

Why might a restore still download data?

The backup reduces the need to fetch the original installation, but it does not freeze every piece of content forever. Steam may contact its servers for an update released after the backup was made, files that were missing or failed in the backup, or other content required to finish the installation. Running file verification can also trigger downloads when Steam finds a problem.

For that reason, describe the result as restoring without redownloading the entire game, not as a guaranteed offline installation. Keep the destination connected when Steam indicates that an update or repair is required. If you need a completely disconnected play session, test that condition with the particular game after restoration; do not infer it from the fact that the backup files were present.

When should you move an installation or use local network transfer?

Use a migration when the original Steam installation is still available and you are moving it to another machine or drive. Use local network transfer when a compatible PC with the installed game is available on the same local network. Both can save a second full download, but neither replaces the stored-backup workflow in every situation.

Move an existing Steam installation

Follow Steam Support’s Moving a Steam Installation and Games procedure and preserve the files and directories it specifies. This is the appropriate route when the source installation is intact and you want to relocate it rather than create a reusable archive first.

Copying only a game-content folder, or improvising an appmanifest-file procedure, should not be presented as the equivalent of the complete documented migration. Steam’s migration instructions define the files and directories that need to move together. Keep the source available until the destination has been opened and tested, and handle saves separately.

Transfer game content from another PC

Steam’s Local Network Game Transfers feature can copy installation content from another PC on the same network. The source PC must have the game installed, and the transfer is not an offline archive: Steam may still need to obtain other content.

There is an important limitation for anyone changing computers. Valve states: “Only file content part of the original game is transferred, no local save games or configuration files are sent.” The LAN method therefore addresses installation data only. Before retiring or wiping the source PC, locate and preserve any local saves and settings that the game does not synchronize through Steam Cloud.

Are saves and settings included?

Do not assume that a copy or restore of installed game data also preserves progress or configuration. Game files, local saves, and settings are separate categories. Check the individual game’s save-file and cloud-support information before changing or removing the source installation.

Steam Cloud support depends on the game. Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes Steam Cloud as a feature developers configure for their titles, so the presence of a Steam account or a successful game restore is not proof that a particular game’s saves are synchronized. Review the game’s Steam information and support material, then preserve local saves separately when coverage is unclear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A successful launch is not proof that progress transferred. A game may start with default settings, show an empty save list, or require a cloud synchronization decision. Treat save verification as its own test: open the game, confirm the expected profile or save appears, and only then consider removing the source copy.

What should you check if a restore is incomplete?

Start with the files and the installed game rather than assuming the backup workflow failed or that the game is ready to play offline.

  • Confirm the backup location. Return to Restore a previous backup and make sure Steam is pointed at the files created for the intended game, not a parent folder containing unrelated data.
  • Check that the generated files stayed together. If the backup was copied between drives, repeat the copy and preserve the complete set. Do not delete individual files because they look temporary or unfamiliar.
  • Verify the installed files. Run Verify integrity of game files for the affected title. Steam may download missing or failed content during this check.
  • Allow for updates or other required content. Reusing the backup avoids fetching the full original installation only to the extent the backed-up content is present and still usable. Steam may need to download updates or missing files.
  • Check whether the source was complete. A title that had not finished downloading or updating was not in the state Steam’s eligibility guidance describes for backup. Complete the source installation and create a new backup if needed.
  • Check progress separately. If the game launches without the expected save, investigate that title’s local save location and Steam Cloud support. The installation transfer itself is not proof that progress moved.
  • Test before depending on the copy. Valve’s recommendation is to test created backups for file integrity rather than waiting until the original installation is unavailable.

Storage, cost, and practical handling

Steam’s backup and restore command does not require a paid subscription or a specific storage product. The cost question is about where you will keep the generated files. Existing internal storage may be enough for a temporary move; removable storage is useful when you want to transport or retain the backup independently of the source PC.

An external SSD for Steam game backups is an optional category to consider when you want a separate, reusable location. An external hard drive is another option, and a USB flash drive can work when the individual backup fits. Steam does not specify a required brand, capacity, or performance tier in the documented workflow. Check the size of your selected backup and the available space at the destination instead of relying on a universal drive-size claim.

Keep at least one complete, testable copy until the restored game and its saves have been confirmed. If the backup is the only copy, do not erase the original installation immediately after Steam reports that file creation finished. Testing first is the difference between having a recoverable backup and merely having a folder that looks like one.

A simple decision guide

  1. Need an archive you can use later? Choose Backup currently installed games, retain the generated files, and restore them with Restore a previous backup.
  2. Still have the original installation and are relocating it? Use Steam’s Moving a Steam Installation and Games instructions and preserve the directories they identify.
  3. Have a second PC nearby with the game installed? Consider Local Network Game Transfers, remembering that the source must be on the same local network and that saves and settings are not transferred.
  4. Need progress as well as game files? Investigate the title’s local save location and Steam Cloud support independently, regardless of which installation method you choose.
  5. Need to operate without network access? Do not assume any method guarantees that. Updates, missing files, verification, or other content may still require Steam to connect.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much storage space do I need for a Steam game backup?

The amount depends on the selected games and the backup files Steam creates. Steam’s workflow asks you to choose a destination; the available guidance does not establish one fixed capacity that fits every selection. Check the destination’s available space and retain the complete generated set.

Can I use an external SSD or hard drive for Steam game backups?

Yes. Steam allows the generated backup to be copied or moved, so an external SSD or external hard drive can be a practical place to retain or transport it. A USB flash drive can also be used when the backup fits. No particular brand or device is required.

Does Steam Cloud save every game automatically?

No universal coverage is established: Steam Cloud support is configured on a per-game basis. Check the specific title’s store or support information rather than assuming every save is synchronized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I delete the original installation as soon as the backup finishes?

A completed backup operation does not by itself prove that the files can be restored. Test the backup first, launch the restored game, and confirm expected saves. Make a separate plan for local saves that are not covered by the game’s cloud support.

Will restoring a backup work with no internet connection?

Do not promise that. Reusing backup files can avoid downloading the original installation again, but updates, missing files, verification, or other required content may still make Steam connect and download data.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Can I just copy the game folder into Steam’s library?

That is not equivalent to Steam’s documented restore path. Use Restore a previous backup for generated backup files, or follow Steam’s complete Moving a Steam Installation and Games procedure when relocating an existing installation.

Does local network transfer include my saves?

No. Valve states that local network game transfer sends only file content that is part of the original game; local save games and configuration files are not sent. Preserve and verify those separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if Steam downloads files after I restore?

That can be normal. Steam may need updates, missing files, or other content, and Verify integrity of game files can reacquire failed data. The backup reduces the original download rather than guaranteeing zero network traffic.

Do games have to be fully updated before backup?

Steam Support’s backup eligibility guidance concerns fully downloaded and updated content. Finish installation and updates for each intended title before creating the backup.

How do I know whether a backup is trustworthy?

Test it before relying on it as your only reusable copy. Valve recommends testing backup files after creation to confirm their integrity for future reinstallation. A completed file-creation process alone is not proof that restoration will succeed.

Which method is best for moving games to a new PC?

Use a stored backup when you want reusable files independent of the source PC, Steam’s migration procedure when the existing installation is intact, or local network transfer when another PC with the game is available on the same network. Compare the prerequisites and handle saves separately.

The Bottom Line

Steam can reuse installed game content through Backup and Restore Games, a documented installation migration, or local network transfer. Keep and test backup files, expect updates or missing data to require downloads, and verify saves and settings independently—especially after a LAN transfer.
