If a Steam game opens in a small window, uses the wrong resolution, or shows black bars, start in that game’s video or display settings. Choose fullscreen and a resolution your display supports. For black bars, check the game’s aspect ratio as well as its resolution. Steam launch options are a narrower fix: the documented switches apply to supported Valve GoldSrc and Source games, not most third-party titles.
Start with the game’s display settings
Open the game’s video, graphics, or display menu and look for a screen mode such as Fullscreen, Windowed, or Borderless Windowed. Select Fullscreen if you want the game to occupy the display, then choose a resolution supported by your screen. Menu names and available options vary by game.
If fullscreen makes the game difficult to use, switch back to windowed mode so you can reach the settings again. Steam’s Steam Link display guidance also recommends trying windowed mode when the desired resolutions are not available in fullscreen.
Fix black bars or a stretched-looking picture
Black bars often mean the game’s image shape, or aspect ratio, does not match the display. Check both the aspect-ratio setting and the resolution in the game’s display menu. Steam’s Steam Link guidance for black bars suggests trying a suitable 16:9 resolution, with 1920×1080 and 1280×720 as examples. Those resolutions are not right for every display or game; choose an option your screen supports.

If the appropriate resolution is missing, try windowed mode and review the available choices. If the picture still does not fit, check the host computer’s desktop resolution. These are troubleshooting steps from Steam Link guidance, not a guaranteed fix for every locally played Steam game.
When Steam launch options can help
Launch options are not universal commands for Steam games. Steam documents the display switches below for GoldSrc and Source titles and says its listed options do not apply to most third-party games. Check that the specific game supports a switch before using it.

Recover a supported Valve or Source game that will not display correctly

When the game’s own settings do not resolve the problem, use that game’s support information rather than assuming a Steam launch switch will work. In Steam, open the game’s Library page and look for its Support area. Steam also recommends contacting the game’s support team for unresolved resolution problems in third-party games; its software troubleshooting guidance explains this route.
