The Steam LavasoftTCPService.dll warning means Steam has detected an old networking component from Lavasoft Web Companion inside, or interfering with, the Steam process. The component is not part of core Windows or Steam and can contribute to crashes, failed launches, or network slowdowns. The dependable fix is to uninstall Web Companion or the related Lavasoft product, restart Windows, remove any documented leftover Lavasoft DLL, restart again, and then retest Steam. If the warning or crash remains, continue with Steam’s checks for conflicting background software, antivirus and firewall interference, download-cache problems, library errors, and damaged game files.
What does the Steam LavasoftTCPService.dll error mean?
Steam is reporting a software conflict, not a missing-DLL problem. Older Lavasoft Web Companion installations could place a TCP filtering component named LavasoftTCPService.dll or LavasoftTcpService64.dll on Windows. That component may be loaded into Steam or affect another program’s network communication.

The warning commonly says that an incompatible version of LavasoftTCPService.dll was detected inside the Steam process and could cause crashes or network slowdowns while Steam or an individual game is running. Autodesk has also documented the 64-bit file interfering with communication between Desktop Connector and the Windows shell over TCP. Webex and BeamNG describe the same leftover Web Companion component as a known source of application-startup or compatibility problems.
This does not prove that Steam itself is damaged. It identifies an old third-party networking module that should be removed from the system before you spend time repairing Steam.

Where is LavasoftTCPService.dll installed?
The location depends on the file’s architecture and the Windows installation. On a 64-bit Windows system, the documented paths are:
C:WINDOWSsystem32LavasoftTcpService64.dllC:WINDOWSSysWOW64LavasoftTcpService.dll
The names are easy to confuse: System32 can contain 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 commonly stores 32-bit components on 64-bit Windows. Do not search for a similarly named file in an unrelated folder and assume it is the one Steam identified. Confirm the exact Lavasoft filename and path before removing anything.

Use this order: remove the parent Lavasoft software, restart, check for the documented residual file, use the vendor cleaner if available, and only then consider manual removal. Restarting matters because Windows and Steam can keep a DLL loaded until the process and operating system have been restarted.
1. Uninstall Web Companion or the related Lavasoft product
- Close Steam and any game that is running.
- Open Windows Settings and go to Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows versions).
- Search for Lavasoft Web Companion and any related Lavasoft networking product.
- Select the entry, choose Uninstall, and complete the vendor’s removal wizard.
Webex’s documented solution begins with uninstalling Web Companion because the DLL is part of that software ecosystem. Removing the parent application first is safer than deleting a file while its services or drivers are still registered.
2. Restart Windows completely
Use Start > Power > Restart. A full restart unloads the Lavasoft module from processes that may have retained it and applies the uninstall changes. Do not open Steam again until Windows has finished restarting.
3. Check for a leftover DLL
After the restart, inspect the two documented locations. You can paste each path into File Explorer’s address bar, or search for the exact filenames from an elevated command prompt. If neither file exists, launch Steam and test the original game or action that produced the warning.

4. Run the vendor cleanup utility when it is available
Autodesk points to Lavasoft’s TCPServiceCleaner.exe through the Web Companion update page. If that official cleanup route is still offered for your installation, use it instead of hunting for a third-party “DLL fixer.” Follow the utility’s instructions, restart Windows afterward, and confirm that the documented Lavasoft files are gone.
Cleanup availability can change as the product and support pages change. Use only a download reached through the vendor’s own support or update page, and verify the executable name before running it.
5. Remove only the confirmed residual Lavasoft file
If Web Companion has been uninstalled, the file remains in one of the documented locations, and the vendor cleaner is unavailable or unsuccessful, BeamNG reports that deleting the confirmed Lavasoft DLL can permanently resolve the conflict. In File Explorer, select only the exact file identified in the documented path and choose Delete.
Do not delete a file merely because its name contains “TCP,” “service,” or “Lavasoft-like” text. Do not replace it with a copy from another computer. If you are not certain that the filename and path match the warning, stop and use a reputable security or support tool for identification.
6. Use Safe Mode if Windows says the file is in use
A running service, startup process, or security product can lock the DLL. BeamNG recommends Safe Mode or a reputable anti-malware cleanup tool in that situation.
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, choose Restart now.
- After the recovery menu appears, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Choose the Safe Mode option, then navigate to the documented path and remove only the confirmed Lavasoft DLL.
- Restart Windows normally and test Steam.
Safe Mode loads fewer third-party services, which can release a file that cannot be removed during a normal boot. If you use an anti-malware tool instead, obtain it from a trusted, researched source and let it identify the file rather than forcing deletion of unrelated system components.
7. Restart Windows and Steam before retesting
Restart Windows once more after cleanup. Then open Steam, wait for it to finish starting, and reproduce the original launch or connection action. Autodesk and Webex both make the restart an explicit part of their cleanup guidance.

Which cleanup method should I use?
The right method depends on whether Web Companion is still installed, whether a leftover file remains, and whether Windows can release it.
| What you find | Recommended action | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Web Companion or another related Lavasoft product is installed | Uninstall it through Windows Installed apps | Restart Windows, then inspect the documented paths |
| The product is gone but a documented Lavasoft DLL remains | Run the official TCPServiceCleaner.exe route if available |
Restart and confirm the file is gone |
| The DLL remains after uninstall and vendor cleanup is unavailable or fails | Delete only the confirmed Lavasoft DLL in its documented path | Restart Windows and retest Steam |
| Windows reports that the confirmed DLL is in use | Use Safe Mode or a reputable anti-malware cleanup tool | Boot normally, restart Steam, and reproduce the issue |
| The warning or crash continues after the DLL is removed | Work through Steam’s interfering-program and client troubleshooting checks | Isolate the remaining cause before reinstalling anything |
What if Steam still crashes or will not launch after the DLL is removed?
Once the Lavasoft component is gone, treat any continuing failure as a separate Steam or Windows troubleshooting case. Steam’s official client guidance recommends checking the following in order of practical impact.
Restart and update the platform
- Restart the computer again if Steam was running during cleanup.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Update graphics, network, chipset, and other relevant device drivers.
- Check available storage and system RAM when crashes or launch failures continue.
Temporarily isolate interfering programs
Steam specifically lists antivirus software, VPNs, anti-spyware tools, firewalls, download accelerators, and hidden startup processes as possible sources of interference. For testing, close or temporarily disable one suspected application at a time, restart Steam, and check whether the symptom changes. Restore protection and normal startup settings after the test; the purpose is to identify a conflict, not to leave security software disabled.
Check firewall and network behavior
A firewall or security suite can block Steam or a game even after the Lavasoft DLL has been removed. Confirm that Steam and the affected game are allowed through the firewall profile you actually use, and review any VPN or traffic-filtering software that inserts its own network layer.

For update failures, stalled downloads, installation errors, or games that refuse to start, Steam recommends these client-level checks:
- Clear Steam’s download cache.
- Repair the Steam library folder.
- Verify the affected game’s local files.
- Change the Steam download region and retry the operation.
These actions address cached data, library permissions, incomplete game files, and regional download-server problems. They do not remove a Lavasoft DLL, so perform them after the Windows cleanup rather than instead of it.
Reinstall Steam without discarding installed games
If Steam itself remains damaged, Steam’s troubleshooting guidance recommends reinstalling the client to the same location. Installing to the existing Steam location preserves installed games, provided you follow the client’s reinstall procedure and do not manually delete the library folders. This is a later fallback, not the first response to a Lavasoft compatibility warning.

How can I handle ads, redirects, or access-denied behavior?
Unexpected advertising, browser redirects, or access-denied messages alongside the DLL warning deserve a security check rather than only a Steam repair. Steam advises running trusted antivirus and spyware scans and obtaining security tools only from official, researched sources. Those symptoms do not establish that the Lavasoft file is malicious, but they do increase the value of a complete scan before you continue troubleshooting.
Do not use an untrusted “DLL download” site to replace or repair the file. The documented issue is an incompatible third-party component, so adding another DLL from an unknown source can create a second problem and make the original cause harder to identify.
How do I verify that the fix worked?
- The Lavasoft Web Companion entry is no longer installed.
- The documented
LavasoftTcpService64.dllandLavasoftTCPService.dllfiles are absent from the paths that existed on your system. - Windows and Steam have both been restarted after cleanup.
- Steam starts without the incompatible-DLL warning.
- The game or Steam function that previously crashed, slowed down, or failed now completes normally.
If the warning returns after a clean restart, look for another installed Lavasoft component or a startup entry that restored the old service, then repeat the uninstall-and-cleanup check before moving to Steam’s broader troubleshooting steps.
Is this a Steam problem or a Windows problem?
It is a compatibility problem at the boundary between Steam and a third-party Windows networking component. Steam detects the DLL because it is being loaded into, or affecting, the Steam process, while Windows stores and loads the file. Removing the Lavasoft component addresses the underlying conflict; Steam’s cache, library, firewall, and file-verification tools address different failure modes that may remain afterward.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the warning appear after I already removed Web Companion?
The uninstall can leave a residual DLL in the Windows system directory, or a running process may have retained the module until a restart. Check the two documented architecture-specific paths after reboot and remove only a confirmed Lavasoft file.
Is LavasoftTCPService.dll itself a Windows system file?
No. The documented component belongs to the Lavasoft Web Companion ecosystem, not to core Windows or Steam. Its presence should be evaluated by its exact filename and path, not by a generic DLL-repair tool.
Can I ignore the warning if Steam still opens?
You can continue temporarily, but the warning identifies a condition associated with crashes and network slowdowns. Leaving the incompatible module in place also makes later failures harder to diagnose, so cleanup is preferable even when a game currently launches.
Should I disable my antivirus permanently to stop the conflict?
No. Steam’s guidance is to disable a suspected interfering application only for a controlled test, then restore protection. If security software is locking the confirmed DLL, use Safe Mode or a reputable cleanup tool instead of leaving defenses disabled.
