Steam error code E87 means Steam has throttled a login attempt because its authentication system detected a response pattern that could indicate an attacker. What does Steam login error E87 mean?
E87 is an account-authentication throttle. In Steamworks’ EResult table, result 87 is described as “Login attempt failed, try to throttle response to possible attacker.” In practical terms, Steam accepted a login failure into a risk-control path and is limiting how quickly further authentication attempts are processed.
The message may appear as “Something went wrong while attempting to sign you in. Please try again later.” The important point is where the error occurs: at sign-in, before you reach your library. It is therefore different from errors caused by a missing game executable, corrupted local content, a graphics driver, or a hardware fault.

Valve documents the result code, but it does not publish a complete list of the signals that trigger it. Several failed submissions are a plausible trigger and are consistent with reports from the Steam Community, but that does not establish a universal rule for every account. Treat E87 as a temporary authentication-risk response rather than as a diagnosis of the reason your original login failed.

What should you do first when E87 appears?
Use this order. It separates an account throttle from a Steam-wide outage, a network path problem, browser interference, and a Steam Guard authorization issue without adding unnecessary account attempts.

How do you troubleshoot E87 in the Steam client?

How do you troubleshoot E87 in a web browser?
Use a browser test to determine whether the client is the source of the failure. Open a different, unmodified browser, disable extensions that alter pages or network requests, and attempt the web sign-in only after the throttle pause.
