Choose the 512GB Steam Machine if you mostly play a rotating set of games and are happy to add a microSD card; choose the 2TB model if you want a large internal library and fewer storage decisions. Valve’s June 22, 2026 launch prices were $1,049 for 512GB and $1,349 for 2TB in the US, before taxes and any later checkout changes. Both versions use the same processor, graphics hardware, memory, SteamOS software and ports. The practical decision therefore comes down to installed-library size, the value you place on internal NVMe storage, controller requirements, display setup and your place in Valve’s reservation queue.
This guide covers Valve’s newer Steam Machine announced in November 2025, not older products that used the same name. Prices and reservation rules below are dated launch information, so confirm the live regional checkout total, bundle contents and delivery estimate before paying.

| Steam Machine 512GB | Players with a rotating library or planned microSD expansion | 512GB NVMe; 16GB DDR5; 8GB GDDR6; RDNA 3, 28 compute units | $1,049 US launch price (June 22, 2026) | SteamOS; other operating systems permitted | Oct 2026 |
| Steam Machine 2TB | Large installed libraries and minimal storage management | 2TB NVMe; 16GB DDR5; 8GB GDDR6; RDNA 3, 28 compute units | $1,349 US launch price (June 22, 2026) | SteamOS; other operating systems permitted | Oct 2026 |
The $300 launch-price gap buys four times the internal capacity, not faster core hardware. Both machines also accept high-speed microSD cards, and Valve says a microSD card used for installed games in a Steam Deck should work in Steam Machine without extra steps.
What should you check before buying a Steam Machine?
Check five things in order: your real installed-library needs, the complete checkout cost, game and launcher compatibility, the display and network connection available in your room, and whether you can actually receive an invitation from the reservation queue. The machine is a compact SteamOS PC rather than a closed console; Valve describes it as “an extension of PC gaming, not as a console.”

Is the 512GB Steam Machine enough?
It is enough when you do not need your entire library installed at once. The 512GB model has the same CPU, GPU and memory as the 2TB version, so choosing it does not reduce the published core specifications. You will need to manage installations more actively as modern games can consume substantial storage.
When 512GB makes sense
- You normally keep a handful of current games installed.
- You already own, or are willing to buy, a high-speed microSD card.
- You prefer spending the $300 launch-price difference on games, a controller or display equipment.
- You are comfortable uninstalling finished games and redownloading them later.
What the capacity does not tell you
The advertised 512GB is built-in NVMe capacity; it is not a promise that every byte is available for game files after the operating system and reserved space. Valve’s support documentation confirms high-speed microSD expansion, but no comparative loading measurement establishes that a card matches internal NVMe performance. Treat the card as a capacity solution, not as a guaranteed equivalent to the internal drive.

Is the 2TB model worth the extra money?
The 2TB model is worth considering when avoiding storage maintenance matters more to you than the $300 dated US price difference. It provides four times the built-in capacity while retaining the same published processor, graphics, RAM and video-output specifications.
Choose 2TB when
- You regularly keep a broad collection of large games installed.
- The machine will serve as a shared living-room library for several players.
- Your internet connection makes repeated downloads inconvenient.
- You want internal storage for games that you would rather not move between drives or cards.
Choose 512GB plus microSD when
The extra capacity is less compelling if most of your play is limited to a few competitive, indie or currently active games. A microSD card can add space, and Steam Deck game-library cards are supported according to Valve. The available evidence does not establish a universal loading-time difference, so base the decision on capacity and convenience rather than an assumed performance premium.
How much does Steam Machine cost?
Valve listed the following US launch prices on June 22, 2026. They are historical launch figures, not a verified October 30 live quote; check your local checkout for tax, shipping, currency conversion, stock and delivery terms.
| Configuration | Valve-listed US launch price | What is included in the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Machine 512GB | $1,049 | Standalone machine |
| Steam Machine 2TB | $1,349 | Standalone machine |
| 512GB plus Controller bundle | $1,128 | Machine and Valve controller |
| 2TB plus Controller bundle | $1,428 | Machine and Valve controller |
Do not assume a controller is included with a standalone configuration. Compare the exact offer shown for your account and region. Also budget for a suitable HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 cable if your existing cable is unsuitable, and for an HDR-capable display only if HDR is part of your intended setup.

Does Steam Machine come with a controller?
No universal controller inclusion is established for the standalone machines. Valve listed separate controller bundles at $1,128 for 512GB and $1,428 for 2TB, compared with $1,049 and $1,349 for the machines alone.
Valve’s controller can pair with the machine’s built-in wireless adapter, so it does not require a separate puck. Valve also says it can wake the machine from the couch. If you already own a compatible gamepad, compare its wireless, wired and wake-from-sleep behavior with the convenience of Valve’s bundle rather than paying for a duplicate controller.
What hardware does Steam Machine use?
Valve lists an AMD Zen 4 six-core, 12-thread CPU and an RDNA 3 GPU with 28 compute units. System memory is 16GB DDR5, with 8GB of GDDR6 graphics memory. Those are specification-sheet figures, not independent game benchmarks; they cannot by themselves predict a particular title’s frame rate.
Size, weight and connectivity
The unit is approximately 152 × 162.4 × 156 millimetres and weighs 2.6 kilograms, including its power supply. Valve specifies wired Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi 6E networking, plus HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 video outputs. Check that your cabinet or shelf leaves airflow room and that your network signal reaches the installation point.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Gaming Mode currently uses one display at a time, and Valve’s support guidance says HDMI is the default when connected. A monitor or television accepting a signal at a given resolution is not evidence that every game renders at that resolution or frame rate.
Can Steam Machine play games at 4K?
It can output a display signal through its supported ports, but you should not buy it on a promise of native 4K performance in every game. Valve identifies 1080p as the default game resolution and the resolution used for Steam Machine Verified testing. Upscaling or output support does not establish a universal frame-rate target.

For a 4K television, treat the machine as a 1080p-first gaming PC whose output may be scaled by the game, SteamOS or the display. Check each demanding title’s current settings and compatibility information, and distinguish a 4K signal from 4K internal rendering.
Will my Steam games work on SteamOS?
Many games are intended to run through SteamOS’s compatibility system, but no blanket guarantee covers every title, launcher or feature. Check your must-play games individually before buying, especially multiplayer games with anti-cheat requirements, games that call an external launcher, and software that is Windows-only.

That was a historical policy statement, not proof that every game works perfectly today. When another operating system may be relevant
Valve allows other applications and operating systems on the hardware. Installing one can address a title or utility that does not meet your SteamOS requirements, but it changes the streamlined console-like experience and may introduce its own driver, launcher and maintenance work. Do not treat permission to install another operating system as a guarantee of support from Valve or a game publisher.
Can I use my Steam Deck microSD card?
Yes, Valve’s Steam Machine support guide says a microSD card used in a Steam Deck for installed games should work in Steam Machine without extra steps. The card still needs to be suitable for game storage, and available capacity depends on the card itself.
Keep expectations realistic: the support statement confirms library compatibility, not equal loading speed with internal NVMe. If a game has unusually high streaming demands, use the internal drive when practical and reserve the card for capacity or less demanding titles.

How should I set up Steam Machine in a living room or at a desk?
Prepare the physical connection and display before the machine arrives. The following checklist covers the decisions that commonly cause setup problems.
- Measure the location. Allow room around the approximately 152 × 162.4 × 156 mm chassis for airflow, cable bends and access to USB devices.
- Choose the video path. Use HDMI 2.0 for a television or DisplayPort 1.4 for a compatible monitor. Confirm the display’s input, resolution, refresh-rate and HDR behavior.
- Connect the network. Use Gigabit Ethernet when a cable run is practical; otherwise confirm Wi-Fi 6E coverage at the machine’s final position.
- Plan input devices. Pair the controller or connect a keyboard and mouse for account setup, troubleshooting and games that do not suit a gamepad.
- Install or move games. Decide which titles belong on internal NVMe storage and which can live on a microSD card.
- Check display mode. Gaming Mode currently operates one display at a time, with HDMI selected by default when connected.
How long is the Steam Machine waitlist?
Valve’s June 22, 2026 launch description uses reservation and waitlist queues rather than promising universal immediate stock. It does not establish one wait time that applies to every buyer. Region, account position, invitation timing and available inventory determine when an eligible customer can order.
Published eligibility conditions
- The Steam account must be in good standing.
- The account must have made a Steam purchase before April 27, 2026.
- An invited customer has 72 hours to complete the purchase.
- Valve’s announcement excluded South Korea from Steam Machine shipping.
These conditions mean an advertised launch price is not the same as an immediately obtainable machine. Check your account’s reservation status and the destination-specific shipping information rather than relying on a general launch announcement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the alternatives if the queue or price does not work?
Valve explicitly points to another living-room PC as an alternative and has described SteamOS 3.8 on AMD-GPU PCs. That route can provide a similar software environment, but Valve cautions that support for other hardware may be limited. A device officially designated Powered by SteamOS is a different support category from installing SteamOS yourself on unrelated hardware.

It is a use of the Steam Machine and local network, not evidence that you need a separate streaming subscription. Streaming quality depends on the host, client and network path, so it should be evaluated separately from local rendering performance.
How do recovery and hardware changes work?
Valve’s official SteamOS recovery options include a full-wipe reinstall and a repair path intended to preserve personal content. Choose the preserving repair route when troubleshooting calls for it, and use a complete reinstall only when you accept deleting the system’s contents.

Valve warns that opening or modifying the machine can cause damage. The available information does not establish that replacing the internal SSD is simple, necessary or covered by warranty. Do not open the chassis merely to chase a capacity upgrade before checking the current service terms and procedure.
Which Steam Machine should you buy?
Buy the 512GB model when your library is actively rotated, you accept microSD expansion and the lower launch price leaves room for the accessories you actually need. Buy the 2TB model when a large internal library and fewer downloads are worth the $300 dated US premium. Add the controller bundle only when you need that controller and the bundle’s live price is better than buying the components separately.

Whichever capacity you choose, verify your important games on the current SteamOS compatibility information, confirm your display and network connections, and check your account’s reservation status. Those checks address the machine’s real constraints more reliably than assuming a resolution label, a specification sheet or an old shipping estimate guarantees a particular gaming result.
How we picked
The comparison prioritizes Valve’s two official capacities, dated launch pricing, storage expandability, published hardware specifications, SteamOS compatibility guidance, display and network requirements, controller-bundle terms, recovery information and reservation eligibility. No independent performance statistic or game benchmark was established for this buying guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install Windows on Steam Machine?
Valve allows other operating systems on the hardware, so Windows is not categorically prohibited. Installation, drivers, launcher behavior and support are separate questions; verify current guidance for the specific operating system and games you need.
Does Steam Machine support two monitors?
The hardware has HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 outputs, but Valve’s current Gaming Mode guidance says one display is used at a time. Do not assume that having two ports means simultaneous dual-display Gaming Mode.
Will a Steam Machine reservation transfer to another Steam account?
The published eligibility rules tie invitations to a Steam account in good standing and require a qualifying purchase before April 27, 2026. No transfer policy is established here, so check the account-specific reservation terms before attempting to change ownership.
Is a microSD card included with either Steam Machine model?
The official configurations are described by their internal 512GB or 2TB NVMe capacity, and the available launch information does not list a microSD card as included. Treat a card as an additional purchase unless your checkout explicitly says otherwise.
