In an Oct. 11, 2026 Reddit post, user freestylemaster attributes controller disconnections on the Steam Machine’s internal receiver to possible interference around its 2.4 GHz antenna cable. The suggested modification is to wrap that cable in double-conductive EMI shielding tape and use another piece of tape to connect the shield to bare metal on the heatsink. The interference explanation is the poster’s hypothesis; the post does not establish the cause of the dropouts.

The poster describes unplugging the machine, removing its back cover and other screws, sliding out the internal board, carefully disconnecting the antenna connector, applying the tape, and reconnecting the antenna. They warn against pulling the cable and letting conductive tape touch exposed circuit-board components. The post calls for a Torx T9H driver, while a commenter reportedly identifies the bit as T8. The correct fit is uncertain, so do not force a bit or fastener. The author estimates the materials and possible driver cost at $15 or less; that is their estimate, not a confirmed current price.

What the $15 claim does—and does not—show
The poster says the controller stayed connected for hours while the CPU was at 90°C and the fan was above 1,600 RPM, and contrasts that with prior dropouts during longer play. Those temperatures, fan speed, duration, and outcome are self-reported. There is no controlled comparison, independent replication, or long-term success rate in the cited material.
The post therefore supports a narrow claim: one owner reported a promising result after shielding the internal antenna cable. It does not show how common the fault is, whether other machines will respond the same way, whether later production runs changed, or whether Valve endorses the modification.

Test the external wireless puck
Owners in another discussion describe forgetting the internal adapter, pairing the controller with the external wireless puck, and moving the puck to improve line of sight. Reports are mixed: some users say this reduced dropouts, while others report continuing trouble or suggest software, interference, or system load as possible factors. One commenter says the puck must be connected to the Steam Machine to act as the receiver; when the controller is paired with the machine, the puck serves as a charger. Contact Valve if the machine is under warranty
Ask Valve support about the fault and available warranty service before opening an in-warranty machine. The original post warns that opening the enclosure can damage the device and may affect warranty coverage. A commenter reports sending a machine to Valve for warranty repair and says it seemed to work afterward, but also says it had not been tested much; that anecdote does not establish eligibility, turnaround, or likely results.
