Steam Next Fest is Steam’s recurring showcase for upcoming games and their playable demos. Other Steam Fests are typically organized around a genre or theme, and may include demos, discounts, or both. “Steam Game Festivals” is broad shorthand, not one specific competing event—check the page for the particular Fest you mean.
What is Steam Next Fest?
Steam Next Fest is a multi-day event centered on games that have not yet been released. Players can try free demos, explore games by category and tags, and, when offered, watch developer livestreams and chats. Steam describes the event as a way to give upcoming games an audience for their demos. Steam’s June 2025 announcement says Next Fest takes place three times a year: February, June, and October.

Next Fest is primarily a discovery and demo event, not a sale. A game’s demo availability is set game by game; do not assume it will disappear when the event ends, or that it will remain available afterward.
How is Next Fest different from other Steam Fests?
Many other Steam Fests are themed around a genre or subject. For example, Steam’s 2025 Zombies vs Vampires Fest announcement described an event featuring discounts and demos on games with those themes. That illustrates the distinction, but it does not establish rules that apply to every themed Fest.

| What to compare | Steam Next Fest | Other themed Steam Fests |
|---|---|---|
| Organizing idea | Upcoming, unreleased games and their demos | A genre, theme, or type of game |
| What players can do | Try demos, browse categories and tags, and follow event programming | Browse games around the theme; the event may offer demos, discounts, or both |
| Schedule | Steam said in 2025 that it holds editions in February, June, and October | Varies by event; check that Fest’s Steam page |
This is a practical comparison, not a complete catalog of Steam events. A themed Fest can include demos, and its exact offers and activities depend on the event.
How to make the most of Next Fest
- Browse by interest. Use the event’s categories, tags, and other discovery options to narrow the selection. Steam’s June 2022 Next Fest announcement describes browsing by category or game tags.
- Try demos that catch your eye. Demos are free to play during the event, but availability outside the event can differ by game.
- Check for developer sessions. Some editions include developer livestreams and chats, which can offer more context about a game.
- Wishlist games you want to follow. Steam says wishlisting can help players receive notice when a game launches.
When is the next Steam Next Fest?
As of October 7, 2026, Steam News search results list the October 2026 edition for October 19–26. Because event dates can change and search results may not reflect the latest details, confirm the schedule on Steam’s current Next Fest news listings before making plans.

Which event should you look for?
- If you want to try unreleased games before launch, look for Steam Next Fest.
- If you want games tied to a particular genre or theme, look for the corresponding themed Steam Fest and check its page for demos, discounts, and dates.
- If someone says “Steam Game Festival” without naming an event, ask which Fest they mean; the phrase alone does not identify a single schedule or set of rules.
