Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If Steam won’t respond to your ROG Ally’s controls, first check where the problem occurs: navigating Steam’s desktop interface and controlling a game are different situations. ASUS documents separate fixes for those cases, plus a conditional setting to try when a game ignores an external controller.
First, identify where the controls stop working
Test whether the Ally’s controls work in Steam itself, in a game, or in both. The distinction matters because the desktop interface and games can use different control modes. ASUS says the Ally’s controls work in Steam Big Picture Mode; for Steam’s desktop interface, its guidance is to use Desktop Mode.
If the Ally’s controls do not navigate Steam
Try Big Picture Mode
ASUS says the ROG Ally’s controls work in Steam Big Picture Mode. If you can navigate there but not in Steam’s desktop interface, that points to a desktop-navigation issue rather than proof that Steam cannot detect the controller.
Set Control Mode to Desktop Mode
- Open Command Center on the Ally.
- Set Control Mode to Desktop Mode.
- Try navigating Steam again. ASUS says the touchscreen or Ally controls can then act like a mouse in the desktop app.
ASUS’s instructions can vary by model or software version. Its ROG Ally FAQ covers the Steam desktop and Big Picture distinction.

If Steam works but a game gets no input
Check the active mode and the game profile
Armoury Crate SE provides Gamepad Mode and Desktop Mode. Check the current Control Mode and the affected game’s profile in the Armoury Crate SE library. ASUS says that with Control Mode set to Auto, the software checks the focused game and selects the applicable mode. If a game is in the library but has no profile, Auto defaults to Gamepad Mode.
Return to Auto if you selected a mode manually
ASUS says manually selecting Gamepad or Desktop applies that control scheme system-wide and temporarily invalidates user-defined per-game profiles. Switch Control Mode back to Auto to restore those profiles. The ASUS Armoury Crate SE guide describes its control modes and per-game settings.

If a game ignores an external controller
This check applies when you have connected an external controller and the game appears to keep using the Ally’s built-in controls. ASUS warns: “Some games will default to the built-in controller, even if you have another connected.”
- Open Command Center.
- Disable Embedded Controller.
- Recheck the game’s input.
This is ASUS’s conditional workaround for controller priority in some games—not a guaranteed fix for every external controller, and not a general remedy for the Ally’s built-in controls.

If the controls still do not work
The ASUS guidance above does not establish a universal Steam Input toggle for this symptom. Avoid changing per-game Steam Input settings on the assumption that one setting is the documented fix. To narrow down the remaining issue, note the Ally model and Armoury Crate SE version, whether the failure affects Steam navigation or one particular game, and whether you are using the built-in or an external controller. ASUS’s FAQ notes that instructions may vary with model or software version.
