Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf Steam shows Install for a game that is already on your computer, first confirm the game folder is still there and the drive that contains it is connected. If the files are in the right place, start the installation through Steam so it can check for and recognize existing files. If the game is in a different library, add that library in Steam’s Storage settings instead.
1. Check that the game files and drive are still available
Make sure the drive holding the game is connected and visible in your operating system. Then look for the game’s installation folder. Steam’s default Windows game folder is C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon, but games installed to another library will be elsewhere.
Do not delete the game folder just because Steam displays an Install button. Steam’s recommended recovery process uses the installation flow to recognize files that remain in the correct location.
2. Start the installation in the library that already holds the files
In your Steam Library, select the affected game and choose Install. When asked where to install it, select the library where its existing folder is located. Steam says this can prompt it to recognize the existing files during the download process.

- Carrying case with removable liner
Steam may check or reuse files, but it does not guarantee that every file will be reused or that no download will be needed. Let Steam complete its check rather than interrupting it.
3. Add an existing alternate library to Steam
If the game is on another drive or in a library Steam no longer lists, add that library location before trying to install the game. In current Steam clients, open Settings, go to Storage, and use the add-library control to register the existing location. Once Steam has added the library, games stored there should appear in your Library.

Steam’s older support instructions may refer to Downloads and Steam Library Folders; labels can differ between client versions. Choose the Storage or library-location controls available in your client, and select the existing library folder rather than creating a new, empty location.
4. Repair the library or verify the game files
If Steam recognizes the library but still has trouble accessing its contents, use the repair option for that library in Storage settings. Repairing addresses library-folder problems such as permissions; it is different from registering a missing library.
If the game appears installed but still will not launch or reports missing or damaged files, verify its files:
- In your Steam Library, right-click the game and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and allow the check to finish.
Verification checks the game’s files; it is not the first step for a library that Steam has not registered.

5. Check for an unreliable external drive
If the library is on an external drive, confirm the drive is connected whenever Steam needs to access the game. Steam Support says, “External hard drives are not recommended for use with Steam or Steam’s games.” Its guidance notes that a drive may disconnect at an inconvenient time and recommends installing Steam and games on an internal drive if an external-drive problem is involved.
Also allow Steam to close normally. Steam warns that forcing it to close while it is writing data can corrupt library or installation information. If you have confirmed the external drive is unreliable, moving the game to compatible internal storage is a possible remedy—not a routine first step.

6. Escalate only after checking the library and files
If the location is correct, the library is registered and repaired, and Steam still cannot recover the game, reinstalling the affected game may be necessary. Broader installation troubleshooting can also include clearing Steam’s download cache or reinstalling the Steam client, but those steps come after checking the game’s location and library.
Before moving or reinstalling, protect your data. Steam recommends backing up the steamapps folder before moving a full Steam installation. Save files need separate attention: Steam Cloud does not cover every game, and third-party games may keep saves in locations chosen by their developers. Steam notes that some may be under DocumentsMy Games, but that is not universal. Confirm the affected game’s save location before proceeding. Steam also warns that uninstalling the client can delete game content.
Do not use “Add a Non-Steam Game” to recover a Steam installation
Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library creates a shortcut; it does not register the game’s Steam installation, provide Steam updates for it, or establish Steam ownership. Use it only when you want a Library shortcut for a game managed outside Steam.
