Steam Offline Mode works when both the Steam client and the individual game were prepared while you were online. Sign in with Remember me enabled, keep Steam credentials saved, complete every client and game update, launch each game once, then choose Steam > Go Offline… before disconnecting. After that, an installed game can start without an active Steam Network connection only if the game itself does not require internet access or an external launcher.
Do the final check before leaving Wi‑Fi: disconnect briefly and launch one of the games you plan to play. This confirms that the current installation, account state and first-run setup are ready; it is not a guarantee that every title in your library will work offline. Valve’s official instructions are in the Steam Support Offline Mode FAQ.

What do I need before enabling Steam Offline Mode?
You need an internet connection for the preparation stage. Have the correct Steam account available, enough local storage for the games, and time to finish downloads, updates and first launches before you disconnect.
- Use the computer on which you intend to play. Offline authorization is stored on that installation, not transferred automatically to another PC.
- Sign in to Steam and select Remember me on the login screen.
- In Steam > Settings > Security, make sure Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected.
- Install each intended game completely, allow Steam and the game to finish updating, and launch every title at least once while online.
- Close Steam normally from the client instead of force-quitting it. Valve says an orderly shutdown helps preserve the information Offline Mode needs.
A game showing a completed download is not necessarily ready. Its first launch may install components, create a profile, accept a license or perform another network-dependent check. Complete those tasks while connected.

How do I enable Steam Offline Mode on a PC?
Use this sequence on Windows, macOS or Linux. The labels below are the current Steam desktop-client paths described by Valve; wording can vary slightly after a client update.
- Sign in while connected. Open Steam, log in to the account that owns the games and leave Remember me checked.
- Allow credentials to be saved. Open Steam > Settings > Security. Clear Don’t save account credentials on this computer if it is selected.
- Finish Steam updates. Let the client update itself before you leave the connection. Restart Steam if it requests a restart and wait until the update is complete.
- Finish game updates. In your Library, wait for each planned game to show that its download and installation are complete. Do not begin the trip while a patch, shader preparation or first-run installer is still pending.
- Launch each game once. Start every title you expect to use offline. Reach its main menu or normal playable state, complete any setup it requests, then exit the game.
- Switch Steam to offline. In the main Steam window, choose Steam > Go Offline…. Confirm the change when Steam asks.
- Close Steam normally and disconnect. Exit through Steam’s own menu, then turn off Wi‑Fi, unplug Ethernet or otherwise remove the connection.
- Verify a representative game. Reopen Steam without internet access and launch at least one intended title. If it starts, close it normally and repeat the check for any game with different launch requirements.
The last verification is practical risk reduction. Steam can be offline-ready while a particular game remains ineligible because that game has its own online or launcher requirement.
What is the difference between Steam being offline-ready and a game being playable offline?
Offline Mode removes the need for an active Steam Network connection for prepared, eligible games. It does not remove a game’s own internet requirement, multiplayer service, digital-rights check or external launcher.
Valve’s wording is explicit: “Games that require an active connection or use an external launcher will not work in offline mode.” Read the complete explanation in the Offline Mode FAQ. A game can therefore be fully downloaded and still fail to start without internet.
Game conditions that usually block offline play
- The title requires a live connection for its core game or authentication.
- The title starts through another launcher that requires its own sign-in or online check.
- The first launch was never completed while connected.
- A client or game update is still required.
- Steam no longer has usable saved credentials on that computer.
Why can a game marked “100% – Ready” still refuse to start?
“100% – Ready” describes the download state; it does not certify offline eligibility. Valve documents the case where such a game displays This game cannot be started in Offline Mode. Reconnect, allow Steam and the title to update, then launch the game once online to complete any outstanding requirements. If the title still needs an online service or external launcher, changing only Steam’s connection state cannot remove that dependency.
What should I check before leaving Wi‑Fi?
Use this one-minute checklist immediately before travel, a flight or any other period without reliable internet.

- Steam is signed in to the intended account and Remember me was enabled.
- Steam > Settings > Security > Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected.
- Steam’s own update is finished.
- Every planned game has finished downloading and patching.
- Every planned game has been launched once online and reached its normal playable screen.
- You exited each game and closed Steam through its menu, not by killing the process.
- You used Steam > Go Offline… while still connected.
- You disconnected and launched a representative game successfully.
Keep the checklist tied to the exact machine you will carry. Moving the drive or account to another installation can trigger a new login or setup requirement that cannot be completed without a connection.
Why is Steam asking me to log in when I am offline?
A fresh login prompt is a hard stop. Valve does not provide a supported offline bypass when the client requires account authentication, so reconnect rather than relying on an undocumented configuration-file trick or an assumed grace period.
Once connected, check the two account settings again: Remember me on the sign-in screen and the saved-credentials option under Steam > Settings > Security. Then finish Steam and game updates and launch the affected game online. Return to Steam > Go Offline… before disconnecting.
If Steam repeatedly loses its offline information, avoid abruptly terminating the client and do not interfere with its installation files. Valve notes that those actions can cause the stored information required by Offline Mode to be lost. The supported recovery is to reconnect, repair the preparation steps and switch offline again.
How do I troubleshoot a game that will not launch offline?
Work through the symptom that matches what you see. Each branch starts with the least disruptive fix.
| What you see | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Steam opens a login screen | The client needs fresh authentication or no usable credentials were saved. | Reconnect to the internet. Sign in with Remember me, confirm the Security setting permits saved credentials, then choose Go Offline… before disconnecting. |
| “This game cannot be started in Offline Mode” | An update, first-run task, online service or external launcher is still required. | Reconnect, complete all Steam and game updates, launch the title once online and try again. If the game itself requires connectivity, it cannot be made offline-only through Steam. |
| The game starts but a feature is unavailable | That feature depends on a network service rather than local files. | Use only the title’s local, single-player content offline. Online multiplayer, cloud functions and other network services require reconnection. |
| Offline readiness disappeared after an improper shutdown | Steam’s stored offline information may not have been written or retained. | Reconnect and repeat the preparation, then close Steam normally before disconnecting again. |
| A game works on one machine but not another | The second Steam installation has not been prepared or authenticated. | Use the second machine while online: sign in, save credentials, update Steam and the game, complete first launch and select Go Offline… there. |
No universal list of “offline games” is permanent. Requirements can change with a game update, launcher change or publisher service, so evaluate each title using the conditions above.

What happens to saves and Steam Cloud while I play offline?
Offline play writes progress to the computer’s local save data. Steam Cloud cannot synchronize that progress until the client reconnects, and Valve notes that not every game uses Steam Cloud.
When you reconnect, Steam may show a local-versus-cloud conflict. Compare the timestamps and contents before selecting a version; do not automatically overwrite a newer local save with an older cloud copy. The official Steam Cloud FAQ explains the synchronization behavior.
Recommended Free Tools
Cloud handling also depends on the game. For a third-party title, the developer determines where local saves are stored, and Steam Cloud may not cover every configuration or file. If a particular game’s progress matters, identify its local-save location from that game’s documentation before travelling and keep the client closed until you have reviewed any conflict dialog after reconnecting.
How does Steam Offline Mode work on Steam Deck?
Steam Deck can play an installed game without a connection unless that game requires internet access. First-time Deck setup, Steam account login and downloading games require Wi‑Fi, so prepare and test titles while connected rather than assuming a button sequence from an older SteamOS release.
Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ distinguishes local launching from network services: downloading and online multiplayer need connectivity, while an installed, offline-eligible game can be played offline. A Deck Verified badge should not be treated as proof that a title supports offline launch; check the game’s own connection and launcher requirements.
Can a microSD card help with travel storage?
Yes, for capacity only. Valve specifies a UHS‑I class 3 or better microSD card for Deck use, says to format the card on the Deck, and states that games stored there appear in the library. This is a hardware compatibility specification, not a guarantee of speed, offline authentication or game compatibility.

Can Steam backups replace Offline Mode?
No. A backup preserves compatible Steam game files for later restoration; it does not supply the account information, first-run authorization or online services that Offline Mode needs.
How to create a Steam game-file backup
- Open your Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Backup game files and choose the destination.
How to restore a backup
- Install Steam and sign in to the account that owns the game.
- Open the Steam menu and choose Restore Game Backup….
- Select the backup location and complete the restoration.
Valve says backups apply to games that download, install and patch fully through Steam. They may not include saves, configuration files or custom files. Use a portable drive as storage insurance, not as a way around offline authentication. Details are in Valve’s Steam game-file backup FAQ.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use Steam Offline Mode immediately after installing Steam?
Not reliably. The installation must first sign in, retain credentials, finish updates and launch each intended game online so first-run requirements are completed. Disconnecting before those steps can leave Steam unable to authenticate or a game unable to initialize.

Does offline play include online multiplayer?
No. Multiplayer servers and other network services still need a connection even when the local game files launch successfully. Offline Mode changes Steam-client connectivity; it does not turn an online service into local content.
Will every game on my Deck be playable on a plane?
No. An installed Deck game can run without Wi‑Fi only when its own design and launcher permit offline use. Prepare each title while connected, and do not infer offline support solely from its compatibility or Verified label.
What if my offline save conflicts with Steam Cloud after reconnecting?
Pause at the conflict dialog and compare the local and cloud timestamps instead of accepting the first highlighted choice. Select the copy containing the progress you want to keep; choosing an older cloud file can overwrite newer offline progress.
Can a Steam backup restore a game on a computer that has never logged in?
No. Restoration still requires Steam to be installed and signed in to the account that owns the game. The backup supplies compatible game files, but it does not provide account authentication or remove a title’s external-launcher requirement.
