Short answer: The Xbox Storage Expansion Card is the add-on that can play Xbox Series X|S optimized games directly and, according to Microsoft, matches the internal SSD’s performance. A USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD can hold any Xbox game and directly play Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles, but optimized games must be moved to the internal SSD or expansion card before you can play them.
How the three storage options compare
| Storage | Store Xbox games | Directly play Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games | Directly play Series X|S optimized games | Performance relative to internal SSD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Internal SSD | Yes | Yes | Yes | Built-in reference storage |
| Xbox Storage Expansion Card | Yes | Yes | Yes | Microsoft says it matches internal SSD performance |
| USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD | Yes | Yes | No | Microsoft does not say it matches internal SSD performance |
Microsoft’s storage comparison distinguishes the card from USB storage by direct play compatibility: the card works like internal storage for Series X|S optimized games, while USB drives serve as extra storage and can directly run backward-compatible games. An optimized game kept on USB has to be moved or copied to the internal SSD or expansion card to play.

Speed: what Microsoft’s figures mean
Xbox lists its Series X|S custom NVMe storage architecture at 2.4 GB/s raw and 4.8 GB/s compressed I/O throughput in its Series X and Series S specifications. These are console specification figures, not a measured head-to-head test of a particular expansion card, USB drive, or game workload.

Xbox Wire’s September 24, 2020 storage primer described it as delivering the same consistent, sustained performance as internal storage. That supports treating the card as the choice for seamless added capacity for optimized games; it does not establish a benchmark against a specific retail USB drive. USB HDDs and SSDs vary, and Microsoft’s compatibility guidance does not assign them a universal speed figure.

Can you play optimized games from an external hard drive?
Not directly from a USB 3.1 HDD or SSD. You can keep a Series X|S optimized game on USB, but you need to move or copy it to the internal SSD or Storage Expansion Card to play it. USB storage remains useful for archiving installed games, keeping a large library connected, and playing Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles.
The expansion card supports installing games by default, direct play, and moving or copying games between local and external storage. See Microsoft’s Xbox Wire storage primer for the card’s role and transfer options.
Capacity: what’s available and what it tells you
The US Xbox product page for the Seagate Storage Expansion Card lists 1 TB, 2 TB, and 4 TB options and compatibility with both Series X and Series S. Capacity and availability can differ by product page and region, so check the listing for your market. The page gives a November 2020 release date; it does not establish current local retail prices.

Those are advertised capacities, not the free space available after the system reserves storage and formatting takes place. Choose expansion capacity based on your library and budget, and compare current local prices rather than assuming one drive type is always the better value.

Which option should you choose?
Choose the Storage Expansion Card for direct play
- You want added storage from which to launch Series X|S optimized games without moving them first.
- You want Microsoft’s stated internal-SSD-matching performance for expanded storage.
- You want to install, play, and transfer games using the dedicated expansion-card option.
The Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card page identifies the Seagate card and supported capacities on its US listing.
Choose USB storage for library space or backward-compatible games
- You mainly need room to keep more games installed or archived.
- You want to play Xbox One, Xbox 360, or original Xbox games directly from the drive.
- You are comfortable transferring an optimized game to internal storage or the expansion card before playing it.
When comparing an external drive for Xbox Series X|S, keep its optimized-game limitation in mind. Microsoft’s cited guidance does not establish a user-installable internal M.2 SSD upgrade as a drop-in replacement for the console’s supported expansion-card or USB storage options.
Does Quick Resume work from external storage?
Microsoft says Quick Resume works when a game is played from the internal SSD, the Storage Expansion Card, or USB 3.1 HDD/SSD storage because game-state data persists on the internal SSD. Quick Resume does not change which games USB storage can launch: Series X|S optimized titles still need to be played from internal storage or the expansion card.
