For a standard game purchase, Valve’s published rule is a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of playtime. Valve says, “You can request a refund for nearly any purchase on Steam—for any reason.” The two-hour figure is a policy threshold, not a promise that every qualifying request will be approved.
Steam’s FAQ counts online, offline and shared-library playtime. If the game page made a claim that is materially inaccurate, you can describe that as the reason for the request; you do not need to prove that the developer intentionally deceived you. A clear mismatch is more useful than a general statement that the game is “bad.”

AI-generated content is not a separate consumer guarantee. Valve’s Steamworks Content Survey asks developers to disclose player-facing AI-created artwork, sound, narrative, localization and content generated during play. That developer disclosure and review process does not mean every game using AI is prohibited or that an undisclosed use automatically qualifies for a refund.
Valve’s survey also distinguishes player-facing output from ordinary development tooling. Its wording says, “Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section.” Your refund explanation should therefore focus on what you encountered as a player—such as generated dialogue, images or live content—not merely on the possibility that a studio used an AI-assisted tool while making the game.

Can I refund a Steam game after two hours if the page was misleading?
You can submit the request, but approval is not assured. Valve invites buyers to request review outside the standard rules, while its FAQ warns that purchases significantly outside the 14-day window are ineligible. The same distinction applies to playtime: sending a request is possible; satisfying the ordinary rule is not.
An over-limit case should identify the exact representation and the point at which the discrepancy became apparent. For example, explain that a store page advertised a playable feature, but the released build omitted it, or that screenshots presented a mode that was not available. State your purchase date and recorded playtime accurately rather than trying to minimize the figure.
There is no published acceptance rate for misleading-listing or AI-content claims. Valve’s general policy and support pages establish the review route, not a guaranteed outcome for an individual allegation.

What counts as a misleading Steam listing?
A persuasive complaint compares a particular advertised promise with the product you received. Valve’s store-review guidance says advertised launch features should be available, screenshots should depict gameplay, and descriptions should set appropriate expectations.
Examples of useful discrepancies
- A feature listed as available at launch is absent from the released build.
- Store screenshots show gameplay, characters or environments that are not in the purchased version, or are presented in a way that materially misrepresents the actual game.
- The description implies a mode, language, multiplayer function or other capability that the build does not provide.
- Player-facing content is generated during play even though the listing gave a materially different expectation, especially when the generated output affects the advertised experience.
Do not claim that Valve has already found a policy violation unless you have an official decision saying so. Describe the evidence: quote or paraphrase the listing, identify the menu or scene where the game differs, and give the date or version when you observed it. Developers can update a game after Valve’s store approval, so approval does not establish that a page or build will remain unchanged.

How do I request the refund?
Have the transaction date, the game’s recorded playtime and the purchase type ready. If the request concerns a discrepancy, save the relevant store-page wording and note what happened in the game before opening Steam Support. These records help you write a precise explanation, although Valve does not state that screenshots are required for every request.

- Sign in to Steam Support. Open the Steam refund support page and authenticate with the account that made the purchase.
- Open Purchases. Select the transaction for the game rather than a different DLC, gift or wallet transaction.
- Choose the problem that best matches your situation. Use the available option for requesting a refund and explain that the listing and the delivered game differ, or that unexpected player-facing AI content is central to the complaint.
- Submit the form. When Steam offers a destination, choose the original payment method or Steam Wallet. Valve notes that some original payment methods cannot receive a refund, in which case the available destination may be limited.
- Write a factual explanation. Identify the advertised claim, describe what the purchased build actually did, and say when you discovered the mismatch. Include your purchase date and playtime when they are relevant. Attach or retain screenshots of the listing, gameplay, purchase record and support correspondence as sensible documentation, not as a claim that Valve mandates all of them.
If the request is declined and you believe it was mishandled, Valve’s FAQ allows another request with a detailed message. Contact Steam Support about next steps if the product problem remains unresolved; do not treat a payment chargeback as a routine substitute for Steam’s support process.

Which purchase limits apply to DLC, gifts and other Steam transactions?
The 14-day and under-two-hour rule is for a base game. Steam publishes separate conditions for other transaction types, so choose the correct transaction before assuming the game rule applies.

Valve’s full category rules are on the Steam Refunds policy page. A key limitation is seller: keys bought outside Steam and third-party wallet-card purchases are outside Valve’s store-purchase refund offer. The seller that processed that transaction controls any remedy.

Does undisclosed AI art guarantee a refund?
No. The fact that a game contains AI-generated art, voices, writing or live-generated material does not by itself guarantee approval. The relevant questions are whether the content is player-facing, whether the listing created a materially inaccurate expectation, whether the developer disclosed it through Valve’s process, and whether your request meets the ordinary purchase limits.
Explain the player impact rather than arguing from a label. For instance, identify a store promise about hand-authored content, a specific character or image shown in the listing, or a live-generated system that produces content materially different from the advertised experience. If your concern is only that an AI tool may have assisted development behind the scenes, that alone is a weaker refund explanation because Valve’s survey section is not aimed at efficiency gains from development tools.
Valve’s content-survey rules require information about safeguards when AI generates content during play, including measures intended to prevent illegal output. That is a developer-review obligation, not a consumer remedy or a finding that a particular game violated the rules.
How do purchase channel and location change the answer?
A purchase made directly through Steam is the clearest case for using Steam Support. An outside-store key is expressly excluded from Valve’s store refund offer, so contact the retailer or key seller instead. A physical boxed copy, third-party wallet card or other separately processed payment cannot be converted into a Steam refund request simply because the game appears in your Steam library.

Geography also matters. Valve distinguishes its voluntary refund offer from statutory consumer rights. In the EU and UK, digital-content withdrawal rules can interact with whether downloading or accessing the game began; the exact result depends on the facts and local law. Do not treat Steam’s 14-day policy as a universal statement of legal rights, or assume that a remedy available in one country applies elsewhere.
Valve’s policy notes that additional rights may apply to faulty games in some places. For a location-specific legal remedy, consult the applicable consumer authority or qualified adviser rather than relying on a general Steam-policy explanation.

Keep a compact record that lets support see the discrepancy without guessing. Useful items include:
- A screenshot or saved copy of the store-page claim, including the surrounding wording that qualifies it.
- A screenshot or short description of the in-game result that conflicts with the listing.
- The purchase receipt or transaction entry showing date and product type.
- The game’s recorded playtime and the date you first encountered the problem.
- Any support response or developer statement relevant to the representation.
These are practical documentation suggestions, not a universal evidence checklist imposed by Valve. Do not edit images or omit playtime; an accurate, narrowly framed account is more credible than an exaggerated accusation.

Read the reason, then submit another detailed request if you believe the first decision did not account for the listing discrepancy or the circumstances. Restate the specific claim and evidence instead of sending the same one-line complaint. Valve’s FAQ permits another request and directs buyers to Steam Support about unresolved product problems.
If the transaction was processed by another seller, pursue that seller’s process. A chargeback can have account and payment consequences and should not be presented as the normal next step for a disputed Steam refund. If you believe statutory rights apply, keep that legal question separate from Valve’s voluntary policy and seek advice appropriate to your jurisdiction.

What is the practical decision rule?
Submit through Steam Support promptly when the game is within 14 days and below two hours, regardless of whether the reason is misleading information or unexpected AI-generated content. If you exceed either limit, still provide a precise, evidence-based request, but treat approval as discretionary rather than guaranteed. The more clearly you connect the store’s promise, the delivered experience, the timing and the purchase channel, the easier it is for support to evaluate the claim.

Can I request a refund if I bought the Steam key from another website?
