Is Steam cheaper than Epic Games Store?
There is no permanent price winner. The lower total depends on the exact game and edition, your country, currency, tax treatment, sale dates, coupons, wallet balances and any rewards you can actually use.

Epic states that it supports regional pricing in more than 190 countries and over 30 territories, with 43 currencies. Valve says Steam supports more than 100 payment methods across over 35 currencies and ties store pricing and payment options to your residence and local payment method. Those figures describe different systems and should not be treated as a direct measure of which store is cheaper in a particular market.
Epic Rewards is the clearest built-in price offset. Epic says eligible purchases made through its payment system can return from 5% to 20% in Rewards balance. The effective saving depends on the product, the promotion, eligibility rules and whether you will spend the balance on a later Epic purchase; it is not an instant cash discount on every order.

How to compare a game fairly
- Match the product. Confirm the same edition, bundle contents, downloadable content, preorder status and included bonuses. A standard edition on one store is not cheaper than a deluxe bundle on the other.
- Use the final checkout total. Compare your local currency after tax and any required fees, not the headline price shown in a search result.
- Apply only live incentives. Check whether an Epic Rewards return, coupon, wallet credit or sale price is active for that account and product.
- Check account dependencies. Some games require a separate publisher account or another launcher even after you buy them through Steam or Epic.
- Read the access and refund labels. Confirm DRM, authentication, offline requirements and whether the listing is refundable before paying.
A price shown on one day can lose to a different promotion the next day. The defensible answer to “Which store is cheaper?” is therefore title-specific: compare the same product at checkout in your region.

What Epic’s free-game program actually provides
Epic’s FAQ says a game claimed during its weekly free-game promotion remains in your library after the promotion ends. Epic describes the claim as a purchased digital license, so the game is not a temporary rental. You still need the Epic account used for the claim, and any game-specific publisher account or online-service requirement remains separate.
When Steam sales can still be the better value
Steam’s advantage is breadth rather than a guaranteed percentage discount. Its larger documented ecosystem, user reviews and long-running catalog make it easier to evaluate older releases, bundles and supported community content in one place. A Steam sale can be the better total offer when the same edition is discounted more deeply, when a bundle includes DLC you would otherwise buy separately, or when you value Workshop and community support enough to avoid a cheaper but less useful purchase elsewhere.
What Epic Rewards changes
Rewards can make Epic’s displayed price and effective price different. Treat the returned balance as store credit with future-use conditions, not as money you can withdraw. Why Steam’s ecosystem matters beyond the launcher

- Look for the exact “refundable” or “self-refundable” label on an Epic listing.
- Note whether the store measures playtime or runtime through its launcher and whether another launcher may affect that record.

Epic’s stated license position
Epic’s FAQ says, “Once you claim a free game, you’ve purchased a digital license for it.” That wording describes ongoing account-based access, not a physical object you can resell or move freely to another account. The available Epic FAQ does not establish that every transfer, suspension or termination rule is identical to Steam’s, so do not assume the two agreements have matching wording.

For either store, protect the account with a unique password and available security controls, retain purchase receipts, and record which publisher accounts a game uses.
