Valve’s SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta, released October 16, 2026, fixes a specific performance problem in STAR WARS: Galactic Racer: slow or degraded performance after a Steam Machine resumes from suspend. The update is available through SteamOS Beta and Preview channels, but Valve has not published an FPS gain, frame-time change, percentage improvement, or benchmark. The changelog also does not confirm that this particular fix applies to Steam Deck.
What exactly does SteamOS 3.9.3 fix?
The change addresses performance issues that occur when STAR WARS: Galactic Racer resumes from suspend on Steam Machine hardware. Valve’s wording is narrow: “Fixed performance issues in STAR WARS: Galactic Racer on resume from suspend on Steam Machine.” That means the fix is tied to the suspend-resume transition, not to every graphics problem, launch issue, or low frame-rate scenario.

It should therefore be read as an operating-system fix for a particular hardware state. A cold launch, a game-side rendering bug, or performance degradation unrelated to resuming from suspend may behave differently.
Does the update improve FPS?
Valve has not quantified the result. SteamOS 3.9.3’s notes contain no frame-rate, frame-time, percentage, or benchmark data for the Galactic Racer correction, so there is no defensible number to quote.

- The following games are included in the cartridge: STAR WARS Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (3.6 GB)
- STAR WARS Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (1.1 GB)
- STAR WARS Episode I Racer (254 MB)
- STAR WARS Republic Commando (2.5 GB)
- STAR WARS: The Force Unleashed (3.4 GB)
The practical expectation is that a Steam Machine that previously resumed into unusually poor performance should return to its normal behavior. That is different from a general FPS boost, and the available notes do not establish a new performance target.
Is the fix available on Steam Deck?
Steam Deck applicability is unconfirmed. Valve’s changelog names Steam Machine specifically and does not say that the same problem or correction was tested on Steam Deck.

How do I install SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta?
You must switch the device to a prerelease update channel; the release is not presented as a stable-channel update. Use this path:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open System Update Channel.
- Choose the Beta or Preview channel.
- Check for updates and install SteamOS 3.9.3 when it is offered.
- Restart, launch Galactic Racer, suspend the Steam Machine, and resume it to check whether the post-resume slowdown has cleared.
Beta software can change before a stable release. Valve’s 3.9.3 notes do not provide a date for a stable-channel rollout, so users who need maximum stability may prefer to wait rather than change channels solely for this fix.
What else changed in SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta?
The update includes several fixes and platform changes beyond Galactic Racer:

- The Crew Motorfest: corrected an issue that could cause GPU errors.
- Multi-monitor audio: fixed audio problems when certain monitors are hot-plugged in multi-monitor configurations.
- Steam Frame: improved support for its wireless adapter.
- System: security and stability updates.
- Developers: Android binder IPC support was reintroduced.
These are separate changes. Installing 3.9.3 does not mean that every game or display configuration receives a performance improvement.
How does the SteamOS fix relate to the game’s own updates?
Operating-system and game patches are separate layers. The official game feed lists launch-period hotfixes and a quality-of-life update that address DLSS stability, a changed minimum graphics-driver requirement, keyboard-layout presets, an increase in online party size from three to six, party-stability problems, a PlayStation 5 connection issue, and an AMD Frame Interpolation crash.
Those changes can affect compatibility or stability independently of SteamOS 3.9.3. If a problem occurs on a cold launch or inside a specific graphics feature, installing the game’s current update may be more relevant than changing the SteamOS channel.

What should affected players check before and after updating?
- Confirm that the slowdown appears after suspend and resume, rather than immediately after a cold launch.
- Record the Steam Machine model, game build, graphics settings, and whether the issue is repeatable; Valve provides no numerical before-and-after result.
- Install the SteamOS update, reboot, and reproduce the same suspend-resume sequence.
- If performance remains poor, test a cold launch and temporarily disable demanding features such as DLSS or AMD Frame Interpolation to separate operating-system behavior from game settings.
- Return to the stable update channel if beta behavior introduces unrelated instability, remembering that no stable release date has been announced in these notes.

What should Steam Machine owners expect?
Owners who saw Galactic Racer become sluggish specifically after waking from suspend have a plausible fix to try now in the Beta or Preview channel. Everyone else should treat 3.9.3 as a broader maintenance release with several unrelated corrections, not as a guaranteed frame-rate upgrade. The absence of a benchmark means the only reliable measure for an individual system is whether the same resume test behaves normally after installation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get the fix without joining a SteamOS beta channel?
Not from the 3.9.3 release described here. Valve distributes this build through the Beta and Preview channels; the notes do not give a stable-channel release date.
Will SteamOS 3.9.3 fix a low frame rate when I start the game normally?
That is not established. The documented correction concerns performance after a Steam Machine resumes from suspend, so a problem present immediately after a cold launch may have another cause.

What if Galactic Racer still runs slowly after resuming?
Check whether the issue also occurs after a cold launch, verify the game is fully updated, and compare behavior with demanding graphics features temporarily reduced. If only the resumed session is affected, report the repeatable hardware and software conditions through the appropriate support channel.
Does the update include fixes for other games?
Yes. The same SteamOS build fixes a GPU-error issue in The Crew Motorfest, along with monitor hot-plug audio problems and several platform-level changes.
