Valve’s SteamOS 3.7.8 became stable on May 22, 2025, and marked the first major step beyond Steam Deck hardware. It added limited support for non-Deck AMD handhelds, with the Lenovo Legion Go S as the first officially supported third-party device. But the phrase “ready for everyone” needs qualification: many rival handhelds can boot SteamOS or benefit from Valve’s compatibility work, while only a smaller group is officially supported.
As of Valve’s August 7, 2026 release information, SteamOS 3.8.16 was the stable version and 3.8.25 was available in Beta/Preview channels. The project is broader than it was in 2025, but installing SteamOS on an ROG Ally, Legion Go, MSI Claw, AYANEO, GPD or OneXPlayer remains a model-specific experiment rather than a guaranteed Windows replacement.

The short answer
SteamOS is no longer effectively limited to the Steam Deck. Valve has added support and fixes for a growing range of third-party handheld PCs, especially AMD-based models. However, booting SteamOS, having working controls and receiving partial fixes are not the same as being an officially supported SteamOS product.

Valve’s current official SteamOS page identifies the Steam Deck, Steam Machine and Lenovo Legion Go S as “Powered by SteamOS” devices. Other handhelds may work well, poorly or only partly, depending on their exact firmware, controllers, wireless hardware, sensors, display and power-management implementation. Valve’s SteamOS page remains the authority for the current support boundary.

What SteamOS 3.7.8 actually released
The original headline referred to SteamOS 3.7.8 stable, released on May 22, 2025. It was an operating-system release, not merely a Steam client update or a routine Steam Deck firmware patch.
- SteamOS is the Linux-based operating system that provides Game Mode, Desktop Mode, drivers and system services.
- Steam client updates change the Steam interface and related software.
- Firmware updates can change device-level components such as the BIOS, controller firmware, dock behavior or other hardware functions.
- Stable, Beta and Preview are separate update channels, with Beta and Preview builds more likely to contain regressions.
SteamOS 3.7.8 mattered because it was the first stable SteamOS 3.7 release and introduced limited support for non-Deck AMD handhelds. Its first officially supported third-party handheld was the Lenovo Legion Go S. Phoronix’s release coverage documents the 3.7.8 launch and its principal technical changes.
Why 3.7.8 was a major handheld update
The release combined underlying Linux updates with features that are particularly useful on portable gaming PCs:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- An updated Arch Linux base.
- Linux kernel 6.11.
- An updated Mesa graphics stack for supported graphics hardware.
- KDE Plasma 6.2.5 in Desktop Mode.
- Initial support for non-Steam Deck handhelds, led by the Legion Go S.
- Battery charge-limit controls.
- Frame limiting for variable-refresh-rate displays.
- Improved AMD power management.
- Controller, Bluetooth, stability and performance fixes.
These changes do not affect every device in the same way. KDE Plasma matters mainly in Desktop Mode; charge limits and VRR depend on the hardware; and AMD power-management improvements cannot compensate for missing device-specific firmware or controls. The release was significant because it widened SteamOS’s hardware ambitions, not because it made every handheld interchangeable with the Steam Deck.

Which devices are officially supported?
Valve’s official product messaging distinguishes between devices designed and supported as SteamOS products and hardware that merely benefits from compatibility work. The officially identified “Powered by SteamOS” devices are:
| Device | What the designation means |
|---|---|
| Steam Deck | Valve’s own SteamOS hardware and the reference platform for the operating system. |
| Lenovo Legion Go S | The first major third-party handheld explicitly associated with official SteamOS support. |
| Steam Machine | Part of Valve’s current 2026 SteamOS ecosystem. |
This list should not be silently expanded to include every ROG Ally, Legion Go, MSI Claw, AYANEO, GPD or OneXPlayer model. A device can have a functioning installer, working gamepad input or a Valve changelog entry without receiving the complete manufacturer-level software experience of an officially supported product.
What changed by August 2026?
Valve has continued adding third-party hardware fixes since the 3.7.8 release. Its release notes describe improved compatibility with recent Intel and AMD platforms, MSI Claw and OneXPlayer variants, devices with external or absent Wi-Fi adapters, and third-party handheld input systems.
Valve’s notes also mention initial gamepad support for the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+, Konkr FIT and AYANEO Pocket S2, plus updated support for the OneXPlayer Apex after new firmware. Earlier releases added or improved support for devices including the OneXPlayer F1, GPD Win 5, GPD Win Mini, Anbernic Win600, OrangePi NEO, Lenovo Legion Go and Legion Go 2.

Those entries show an expanding compatibility effort, not a universal certification program. Similar AMD APUs do not guarantee identical results: handhelds use different embedded controllers, button layouts, sensors, wireless modules, screens, firmware and power-management systems.
Stable versus Beta
Valve’s August 7, 2026 information identified:
- SteamOS 3.8.16 as the latest stable release.
- SteamOS 3.8.25 in the Beta/Preview channels.
The 3.8.25 beta included more work for non-Valve devices, while Valve also warned of performance problems in some composition-heavy situations. The notes said the issue was fixed in stable 3.8.16. The beta’s Linux kernel 6.18.42 belongs to that later 2026 beta build and should not be attributed to historical SteamOS 3.7.8.
Because version numbers change quickly, “the latest SteamOS update” is incomplete without a date and channel. Check Valve’s Steam Deck news page before changing update channels or troubleshooting a specific build.
Can you install SteamOS on an ROG Ally or Legion Go?
Valve provides SteamOS installation and repair guidance, including example instructions for hardware such as the original Lenovo Legion Go and ASUS ROG Ally. That does not make installation equivalent to receiving a normal Windows update. You generally create recovery media, boot the handheld from it and choose a recovery or reinstallation option.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Use Valve’s current SteamOS installation and repair page for the recovery image and exact current choices. The broad process is:
- Back up personal files, game saves and configuration data.
- Save Windows-only utilities, drivers and firmware tools you may need later.
- Download Valve’s official SteamOS recovery image.
- Write it to a USB drive with a trusted disk-imaging tool.
- Shut down the handheld completely.
- Open the manufacturer’s boot menu and select the USB drive.
- Choose the appropriate recovery or reimage option.
- Complete first-boot setup and select the Stable channel unless you intentionally want to test Beta or Preview.
- Test the hardware before restoring your full library.
This is not a universal button sequence. ASUS, Lenovo, MSI, GPD and OneXPlayer use different boot-menu controls and firmware settings. A reimage may erase the internal drive, so prepare Windows recovery media and manufacturer drivers before starting. If retaining Windows matters, investigate a dual-boot or separate-drive strategy for the exact model rather than assuming the SteamOS installer will preserve your existing layout.

A successful boot proves very little. Before treating a rival handheld as a Steam Deck replacement, test:

SteamOS versus Windows on a rival handheld
Why SteamOS may be preferable
- A more console-like Game Mode interface on a small screen.
- Tighter integration with Steam Input, Steam Cloud, Remote Play and Steam-native features.
- Less dependence on desktop-style Windows controls.
- A potentially simpler suspend/resume and handheld navigation experience.
- Access to Linux gaming through Proton.
Valve says SteamOS uses Proton to run a large portion of the Steam library, but compatibility varies by game. Launchers, DRM, anti-cheat systems and Windows-only middleware can still prevent a title from working correctly.
Why Windows may remain the safer choice
- Broader support for non-Steam launchers and Xbox PC Game Pass.
- Better compatibility with games that require Windows-only middleware or anti-cheat.
- Access to the manufacturer’s fan, RGB, power, button-mapping and firmware utilities.
- Lower risk of missing drivers or losing device-specific controls.
- An easier path back to the factory software environment.
On an ROG Ally or Ally X, for example, Armoury Crate may provide controls and power profiles that SteamOS cannot reproduce completely. Legion Go and Legion Go 2 hardware also differ in displays, detachable controllers, firmware and power behavior; official Legion Go S support should not be generalized to every Legion Go. MSI Claw, AYANEO, GPD and OneXPlayer support should likewise be checked by exact model and release channel.
Common failure modes and recovery plans
| Problem | Practical response |
|---|---|
| No Wi-Fi | Keep a USB Ethernet adapter, phone tethering option or second computer available. Unusual wireless hardware may need additional support. |
| Controls do not work | Use an external keyboard, mouse or controller and return to the recovery environment if necessary. |
| Black screen or boot failure | Recheck the recovery image, boot mode and display path; retain the manufacturer’s Windows recovery media. |
| Poor battery life | Compare TDP, refresh rate, brightness and background services before attributing the result solely to SteamOS. |
| Games fail to launch | Check Proton compatibility, anti-cheat status, launcher requirements and Windows-only components. |
| Suspend/resume fails | Run several sleep cycles before relying on the device as a console. |
| Firmware tools are unavailable | Keep Windows accessible because some vendor firmware utilities may only run there. |
Who should install SteamOS?
Steam-focused users who prefer a console interface, understand recovery media and can tolerate model-specific troubleshooting are the best candidates. SteamOS is particularly attractive when most of your library is on Steam and you value Game Mode more than access to every Windows launcher or vendor utility.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep Windows if you rely on Xbox PC Game Pass, non-Steam launchers, competitive games with sensitive anti-cheat systems, Armoury Crate or similar utilities, or a predictable manufacturer-supported recovery path. Do not buy a niche handheld solely because it can “run SteamOS” unless you have verified support for the exact model and know how to restore its factory operating system.
Bottom line
SteamOS 3.7.8 was a genuine turning point: on May 22, 2025, Valve moved its handheld operating system beyond the Steam Deck and officially supported the Lenovo Legion Go S. By August 2026, stable SteamOS 3.8.16 and ongoing 3.8.25 beta work showed that third-party compatibility was expanding further.
But “ready for everyone” does not mean every AMD handheld is officially supported. SteamOS is becoming a broader handheld platform, while the safest plug-and-play choices remain the Steam Deck and devices Valve explicitly presents as SteamOS products. For other handhelds, treat installation as a reversible project only if you have backups, recovery media and a willingness to test every important hardware feature.
