For an all-AMD desktop with a spare NVMe drive, SteamOS is the closest route to a Steam Deck-style machine, but its recovery installer wipes the target disk and its official PC support remains limited. For Nvidia or Intel graphics, same-disk Windows dual-booting, or a normal graphical installer, Bazzite is the practical choice. Use a 16GB-or-larger USB 3.0 drive for either operating system. SteamOS requires Secure Boot disabled; Bazzite can use Secure Boot after you enroll Universal Blue’s key. Neither operating system replaces Windows for every game: kernel-level anti-cheat games such as Fortnite, Valorant and Call of Duty still generally require Windows.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Free plan / price Platforms Checked
SteamOS All-AMD living-room PCs or handheld-like desktops with a dedicated drive AMD hardware, NVMe target, Secure Boot off; wipe-and-reimage installer Free recovery image Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame, Legion Go S; beta support on other AMD systems Oct 2026
Bazzite Nvidia or Intel systems, conventional installation and Windows dual-boot x86_64, UEFI, 8GB RAM, 64GB free internal SSD; GPU-specific images Free ISO Desktop and laptop PCs with AMD, Intel or Nvidia graphics Oct 2026
Windows 11 Anti-cheat-heavy libraries, Game Pass and Nvidia-specific features Standard Windows installer and broad vendor support Not stated Desktop and laptop PCs with full vendor support Oct 2026

SteamOS and Bazzite both run Windows games through Proton, but they are different projects. SteamOS is Valve’s Arch-based system with Steam Game Mode and KDE Plasma. Bazzite is an immutable Fedora Atomic image maintained by Universal Blue; its optional Bazzite-Deck images provide a similar Gamescope session but are not Valve-certified SteamOS.

Which operating system should you install?

Choose based on graphics hardware, disk layout and the games you must run rather than on the desktop theme.

Choose SteamOS when the PC is all AMD

SteamOS is the better fit for an all-AMD system that has a spare NVMe SSD and can dedicate that disk to the operating system. Valve’s current recovery image includes a Deck/Machine/PC path, and SteamOS 3.9.5 was released to all users on 23 October 2026. Valve’s release notes also describe motherboard bootloader work and suspend/resume fixes for RDNA1 and RDNA2 discrete GPUs. Generic desktop support is still less comprehensive than support for certified hardware.

Valve’s exact support split is important: "Currently, the only devices officially Powered by SteamOS are Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame and Legion Go S." Valve also says, "SteamOS can be installed on additional AMD-powered devices beyond those listed above." Other AMD handhelds, AMD discrete graphics cards and systems such as the Legion Go and ROG Ally are treated as beta support, with limited Valve troubleshooting outside the certified list.

Choose Bazzite for Nvidia, Intel or Windows dual-boot

Bazzite publishes separate AMD/Intel and Nvidia images, including proprietary Nvidia drivers in the -nvidia variants. It has a live environment and an Anaconda-style graphical installer, and its documentation covers Windows dual-boot on one disk or separate disks. That makes it the default route for an Nvidia desktop or for anyone who cannot erase Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SteamOS is not a practical Nvidia or Intel-discrete installation today. GameSpot reported that Valve was working toward official Nvidia support for 2027, but that is secondary reporting rather than a date promised in Valve’s support FAQ. Unofficial community scripts exist, but they are not the supported installation path described here.

Keep Windows for specific compatibility requirements

Windows remains the straightforward choice for kernel-level anti-cheat games, Game Pass and software that depends on vendor-specific Windows drivers. Fdaytalk lists Fortnite, Valorant, Call of Duty, Battlefield 6 and Destiny 2 among games that fail or remain problematic under Proton because of anti-cheat. A Linux installation can coexist with Windows, but it should not be treated as a universal replacement.

What do you need before installing?

Prepare the hardware and backups before downloading an image. A failed boot is recoverable; an erased disk without a backup is not.

Item SteamOS Bazzite
Installer USB Valve says 8GB minimum; use 16GB or larger USB 3.0 Current guide calls for 16GB or larger; older guidance says 10GB minimum
Firmware UEFI with Secure Boot disabled UEFI required; CSM/Legacy unsupported; Secure Boot can be enrolled
Graphics AMD is the practical target; Nvidia and Intel discrete graphics are not supported as a normal path Download the matching AMD/Intel or Nvidia image; Gaming Mode has extra Nvidia caveats
Storage Plan on an internal NVMe SSD dedicated to SteamOS 64GB free is the absolute desktop-guide floor; 120GB or more is realistic for games
Input Keyboard and controller recommended Physical keyboard required when the system has no touchscreen; USB keyboard is needed to unlock encrypted storage
Network Needed for updates and first-run setup Internet is useful for testing and updates; the live installer can start without it
  • Back up documents, game saves and recovery keys. Image installation can destroy partitions.
  • For SteamOS, physically disconnect every internal drive you want to keep. Do not rely on selecting the right disk in the recovery interface.
  • For Bazzite, have a wired keyboard available and record any LUKS password somewhere safe. Bazzite’s documentation warns that forgetting the encryption password makes the data unrecoverable.
  • Use Fedora Media Writer or Rufus to create the USB. Bazzite’s desktop documentation says Ventoy is not recommended and provides no support for it, even though a newer guide describes extra Secure Boot steps for some Ventoy setups.

How to install SteamOS on a custom gaming PC

SteamOS uses a recovery desktop rather than a Windows-style partition wizard. The normal custom-PC procedure is a complete wipe of the selected device, so treat the target NVMe as disposable until the installation is finished.

1. Confirm the hardware and isolate the target disk

Use an AMD-based PC with an NVMe SSD. Disable overclocking while installing, and disconnect SATA drives, secondary NVMe drives and the Windows disk. Leaving several drives attached increases the chance of erasing the wrong device or placing boot files somewhere unexpected.

2. Download Valve’s current recovery image

Get the Deck/Machine/PC image from Valve’s SteamOS download page. Prefer the current image over an old mirror; older images may lack Mesa updates needed by newer AMD GPUs, including RDNA 4 models. The image is compressed as an .img.bz2 file.

3. Flash a 16GB-or-larger USB 3.0 drive

On Windows, Rufus can write the image. On macOS or Linux, Balena Etcher is a graphical option. Linux users can use Valve’s documented command, replacing the filename and device node with the values on their system:

bzcat steamdeck-recovery-4.img.bz2 | sudo dd if=/dev/stdin of=/dev/sdX oflag=sync status=progress bs=128M

/dev/sdX is an example, not a literal device to paste blindly. Identify the USB by its capacity before running dd, because choosing an internal disk will overwrite it.

4. Disable Secure Boot and open the UEFI boot menu

Enter firmware setup with the motherboard’s Del, F2, F12 or Esc key, disable Secure Boot, save, then choose the USB from the one-time boot menu. SteamOS and Bazzite have opposite Secure Boot guidance: leave it off for SteamOS; Bazzite can enroll its own key.

5. Start the recovery desktop

Booting the image may leave the screen dark for a while before the KDE recovery desktop appears. Wait rather than powering off immediately. Connect a display directly to the supported AMD graphics output if the motherboard has several choices.

6. Select the wipe option

On the recovery desktop, choose Wipe Device & Install SteamOS, then confirm. Valve describes this option as: "Select the Wipe Device & Install SteamOS option on the desktop. This will fully wipe your device and install stock SteamOS." The recovery menu also includes Re-image Device, Repair SteamOS and other tools, but Repair is intended to preserve an existing installation rather than convert a Windows disk.

7. Complete first boot

Remove the USB when prompted and allow the PC to boot from the NVMe drive. Choose language, network and display settings, sign in to Steam and install the first operating-system update. Desktop Mode uses KDE Plasma; Steam Game Mode is the controller-first interface. SteamOS 3.9 notes record a change from Plasma 6.4.3 to Plasma 6.7.3.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Update before adding games

Run SteamOS updates from the System section of Settings in Game Mode, then reboot. Add games only after the update completes so firmware, Mesa and controller changes are applied together.

Can SteamOS dual-boot with Windows?

Valve’s official dual-boot wizard is not ready. Valve states: "While Steam Deck and Steam Machine are fully capable of dual-boot, the SteamOS installer that provides a dual-boot wizard isn’t ready yet. This will ship alongside SteamOS once it’s complete."

A community workaround uses separate drives: disconnect the Windows drive, install SteamOS on a second NVMe, reconnect Windows and select the desired disk from the motherboard’s UEFI boot menu. This is not the same as an officially supported same-disk wizard. Do not present same-disk SteamOS dual-boot as a normal supported option.

What should you do if SteamOS has no network after installation?

This is a community-reported recovery procedure, not a Valve guarantee. Fdaytalk documents systems that reach the desktop without networking or fail the first update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Ctrl+Alt+F4 to open a text console.
  2. Log in as deck; the recovery environment commonly has no password set for this account.
  3. Try systemctl start NetworkManager, then steamos-update.
  4. Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to return to the graphical session and retry the update.

If the machine has Nvidia or Intel discrete graphics, or only SATA storage, switching to Bazzite is usually more productive than forcing an unsupported SteamOS configuration.

How do you choose the correct Bazzite ISO?

Use the live image picker at download.bazzite.gg rather than copying a filename from an old guide. Four choices determine whether the resulting system fits your PC.

Machine type: Desktop

Select Desktop for a custom tower or laptop. Handheld images are for handheld layouts and controls. A television-focused computer can still use the desktop machine choice with a Deck image selected below.

GPU vendor: AMD/Intel or Nvidia

Choose the Nvidia variant when the PC has an Nvidia GPU. The -nvidia images include proprietary drivers. Installing the generic image on an Nvidia system is a common avoidable error. Bazzite documents ujust switch-image for changing image variants later without a complete reinstall, although a clean install is simpler when the disk is still empty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Desktop: KDE Plasma or GNOME

KDE Plasma is the closest match to SteamOS’s desktop and is the easiest choice for a controller-focused build. GNOME is available through the -gnome image for users who prefer its workspace model.

Steam Gaming Mode: Bazzite-Deck

Choose Bazzite-Deck, or -deck-nvidia for Nvidia, when the PC should boot directly into a Gamescope Steam session. Desktop Mode is available from the Steam power menu. Steam Gaming Mode requires a Steam account. Modern AMD cards such as RX 4xx and newer, newer 600M/700M integrated graphics and Intel Arc are supported with varying caveats; Bazzite maintainers document major caveats for Nvidia Gaming Mode.

How to install Bazzite on a desktop or laptop

Bazzite’s installer gives you a live preview and conventional storage choices. It is still an operating-system replacement, so back up the target drive before beginning.

1. Check the minimums

The official hardware guidance calls for x86_64, UEFI firmware, a 2GHz quad-core CPU or better, 8GB RAM, Vulkan 1.3-capable graphics and an internal SSD. The desktop guide lists 64GB free space; the hardware guide gives 50GB as a minimum and 120GB as a recommendation. Use GPT partitioning. An MBR install fails; Microsoft provides an MBR-to-GPT conversion tool for Windows users who need to prepare a disk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Download and optionally verify the ISO

Choose the image in Bazzite’s picker and download it. The official pages do not pin one permanent build string, so use the current picker instead of relying on a blog’s version number. A SHA256 check is optional but useful when a download was interrupted or mirrored.

3. Flash the USB

Fedora Media Writer is the preferred cross-platform tool. Rufus is a Windows alternative and Etcher works on macOS or Linux. Use a 16GB-or-larger USB 3.0 drive, let the tool erase it, and eject it cleanly after writing.

4. Boot the live environment

Use the motherboard’s F9, F12 or Esc boot menu and select the USB in UEFI mode. Explore the live desktop and check displays, Wi-Fi, audio and controllers. Live-session performance is only a compatibility check, not a prediction of installed-game performance.

5. Set regional options

Choose language, region, keyboard layout and time zone. A physical keyboard is required on systems without a touchscreen.

6. Select storage carefully

Select only the intended target drive. Automatic storage configuration is the normal option on the current live ISO. Manual partitioning for same-disk dual-boot is associated with the legacy ISO, so do not improvise partition layouts unless you are following the matching Bazzite documentation.

Enable LUKS encryption only if you can retain the password. At every boot the encrypted volume needs keyboard input; losing the password means losing the data. Do not enable a separate root account. Create an administrator user with a password you will remember.

7. Install, reboot and remove the USB

Review the summary, start installation and reboot when it completes. Remove the USB so the computer does not return to the live environment. The first boot shows GRUB with the current deployment and a previous deployment that can serve as a rollback target if an update causes trouble.

8. Finish Secure Boot enrollment if enabled

If Secure Boot is on, enroll Universal Blue’s key when the blue MOK screen appears. Choose Enroll MOK and enter universalblue. The password is typed using an English QWERTY layout even when the physical keyboard is AZERTY, and the characters remain hidden.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you skipped enrollment, temporarily disable Secure Boot and run ujust enroll-secure-boot-key, enter universalblue, then re-enable Secure Boot. ujust bios can open firmware setup. A BIOS update may turn Secure Boot back on and require enrollment again.

How do you dual-boot Bazzite with Windows?

Bazzite documents both same-drive and separate-drive arrangements. Separate drives are safer because each operating system keeps its own EFI files.

Separate-drive method

  1. Back up both disks and shut down Windows.
  2. Physically disconnect the Windows drive before installing Bazzite, as the documentation highly recommends.
  3. Install Bazzite to the second SSD using automatic storage.
  4. Reconnect the Windows disk and use the motherboard’s UEFI boot menu to choose Windows or Bazzite. You can place Bazzite first in firmware boot order if you want GRUB to appear by default.

If Windows is installed second, disconnect the Bazzite drive during the Windows installation so Windows cannot place its EFI files on the Linux disk.

Same-drive method

  1. In Windows, disable BitLocker and Fast Startup, then reboot.
  2. Use Windows Disk Management to shrink the Windows partition and leave unallocated space.
  3. Boot the Bazzite live ISO and choose automatic partitioning on the target disk. The current live installer does not provide the same manual layout controls as the legacy ISO.
  4. After the first Bazzite boot, run ujust regenerate-grub so Windows is added to the GRUB menu.

Keep a Windows recovery drive available. Dual-booting other Linux distributions, especially non-atomic Fedora installations, is not officially supported by Bazzite’s guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What Secure Boot setting should you use?

Use opposite policies for the two operating systems. SteamOS needs Secure Boot disabled for the custom-PC recovery path. Bazzite supports Secure Boot after its Universal Blue key is enrolled.

System Setting Failure symptom Fix
SteamOS Disable Secure Boot before booting the USB and leave it off USB will not boot or firmware rejects the loader Enter UEFI, disable Secure Boot and retry
Bazzite Enabled is supported after MOK enrollment bad shim signature or you need to load the kernel first Disable Secure Boot temporarily, run ujust enroll-secure-boot-key, enter universalblue, then re-enable it

How should you set up games after installation?

Sign in to Steam, install updates and use Proton for Windows titles. ProtonDB reports are a useful per-game compatibility check, while Steam Deck Verified or SteamOS Compatible labels are only a first filter and are not guarantees on a desktop, especially with Nvidia hardware.

Other launchers

Bazzite documentation points to Linux launchers such as Lutris and related tools. Heroic is commonly used for Epic and GOG libraries; Lutris can manage Battle.net, EA and Ubisoft installations. These tools do not change the anti-cheat limitations of the underlying game.

Secondary game drives

Bazzite uses BTRFS by default. Format a secondary SSD as BTRFS or a hard drive as Ext4. Bazzite’s hardware guide states, "NTFS and exFAT/FAT32 are NOT SUPPORTED." NTFS can prevent games from launching and eventually corrupt data under Proton or Wine; FAT-family filesystems lack the symlinks needed by compatibility prefixes. There is no reliable shared Windows/Linux game-library filesystem. Using WinBtrfs is an at-your-own-risk workaround rather than an official solution.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

What Proton can and cannot do

TechSpot reported more than 18,000 titles running through Proton at the time of its 2026 coverage. Fdaytalk summarized ProtonDB ratings as showing around 80 percent of the top 100 Steam games running well. Those are published figures from those sources, not a guarantee for your hardware or a Valve promise. Keep Windows available for games whose anti-cheat driver does not support Linux.

SteamOS versus Bazzite: the practical decision

Decision point SteamOS Bazzite Windows 11
GPU support AMD discrete and AMD handhelds; generic PC support is beta AMD, Intel and Nvidia images; Nvidia Gaming Mode has caveats Full vendor support
Installer Recovery desktop with wipe/re-image flow Graphical Fedora installer with live session Standard installer
Dual-boot No official wizard; separate-drive workaround Documented same-drive and separate-drive Windows setups Not applicable as a Linux dual-boot target
Interface Steam Game Mode plus KDE Plasma KDE or GNOME; optional Steam Gaming Mode on Deck images Traditional desktop
Support route Valve support is limited outside certified devices; PC bugs go to SteamOS GitHub Universal Blue documentation and community Discord OEM and Microsoft support
Best fit All-AMD couch PC with a dedicated NVMe Nvidia/Intel PC, Windows dual-boot or conventional installation Anti-cheat, Game Pass and Windows-only software

How we picked these installation paths

The recommendations follow the documented hardware gates, installer behavior, storage support, Secure Boot requirements and Windows dual-boot options. SteamOS ranks first only for the narrow all-AMD, dedicated-NVMe use case; Bazzite ranks first for Nvidia, Intel, same-disk Windows or a conventional installer. Windows remains in the comparison because anti-cheat and platform-specific software can make Linux unsuitable for a particular game library.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change from the KDE Bazzite image to GNOME without reinstalling?

Bazzite provides image-rebase helpers through ujust, including ujust switch-image for changing variants. Rebase only after confirming the exact current image name in the official picker and keeping a rollback deployment available in GRUB.

Will a live Bazzite session tell me how games will perform?

No. The live session is mainly for checking display output, networking, audio and input devices. Installed drivers, updates, shader caches and Proton configuration can change game behavior substantially.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if a motherboard firmware update turns Secure Boot back on?

Bazzite may stop booting until its signing key is enrolled again; temporarily disable Secure Boot, run ujust enroll-secure-boot-key, enter the enrollment password and turn Secure Boot back on. SteamOS custom-PC installs should remain with Secure Boot disabled.

Can one USB drive install both operating systems?

Yes, provided it is rewritten between installations. A 16GB-or-larger USB 3.0 drive covers the stated media requirements, but flashing a new image erases the previous installer.

Do SteamOS and Bazzite share the same recovery tools?

No. SteamOS offers Valve recovery actions such as Re-image Device and Repair SteamOS, while Bazzite keeps an earlier immutable deployment in GRUB for rollback. Their update and repair procedures should not be mixed.
