Stellar Repair for Outlook can be useful when an Outlook PST or OST is too damaged for Microsoft’s free Inbox Repair Tool, especially if you need a preview, deleted-item filtering or exports beyond a repaired PST. It is not an all-purpose Outlook crash fixer, and there is no independently audited universal recovery rate. The desktop edition processes files on a Windows PC and offers the broadest export options; the browser service avoids installing Outlook but requires uploading the file and imposes size and retention limits. How do the desktop, online and Microsoft repair paths differ?
The decisive choice is where processing occurs and what you need to do with the result. The desktop application keeps the source PST on your Windows computer and is the practical option for very large or numerous files. Stellar Online PST Repair sends the file to Stellar’s servers, while Microsoft’s SCANPST.EXE is a free local utility intended for routine data-file errors.

The vendor’s “unlimited” desktop wording does not remove ordinary constraints such as available disk space, scan time or the ability of the repaired output to open. It means the license is not advertised with the online service’s 5 GB ceiling.

It is more capable, but not automatically a better first step. ScanPST is free, local and appropriate for commonplace PST errors. Stellar adds a visual preview, filtering, deleted-item handling and many export targets, which matter when ScanPST cannot produce a usable mailbox or when you need to salvage particular folders and messages.

Microsoft warns that SCANPST can require repeated runs and that permanently deleted or irreparably corrupted items may remain unrecovered. Running it does not prove every mailbox object is intact; inspect important messages and attachments afterward.
What did independent testing actually find?
A ComputingForGeeks comparison published in 2026 used one severely corrupted PST. Its Stellar desktop and online results each contained 99 mailbox items, while the open-source readpst tool extracted 31. That is a single, product-specific test, not a success-rate benchmark: one file cannot establish how Stellar will perform on your PST, your Outlook version or your corruption pattern.

The vendor also publishes an endorsement from Exchange MVP Clint Boessen calling the tool “a fantastic tool.” It is a vendor-hosted testimonial, not an independently controlled test. Stellar’s product page claims “100k+ Files Repaired,” but gives no publication year or methodology, so the statement should be treated as undated marketing rather than a measured recovery statistic.
What can Stellar recover and export?
Mailbox content
The advertised recovery scope covers email messages, attachments, contacts, calendars, tasks, notes, journals and deleted items. Preview lets you inspect folders and content before committing to an output file, which is useful when a scan finds a mixture of healthy and damaged records.
Deleted items
Deleted-item recovery is an advertised capability, not a guarantee that every permanently deleted record can be reconstructed. Physical overwriting, severe structural damage or missing message data can still leave an item unavailable. Treat the preview as the practical test for your file.
Output formats
The desktop application can save recovered material as a new PST or as MSG, EML, RTF, HTML or PDF files. Those formats serve different purposes: PST preserves a mailbox structure for Outlook, MSG and EML are useful for individual messages, and the document formats are convenient for reading or archiving. Technician adds export to Office 365 and Live Exchange.
Do you need Outlook installed?
The answer depends on the path. The online service is advertised as not requiring Outlook. For the desktop application, an independent test found that classic Outlook was needed when saving the recovered data, even though scanning and previewing occurred in the repair utility. Plan for a compatible classic Outlook installation if your goal is a normal Outlook-importable result.

SCANPST is also a local tool, but Outlook is part of the subsequent workflow: after repair, you use Outlook to reopen or import the resulting data file. The requirement is therefore different from the online service’s browser-based process.
How should you repair a corrupt PST safely?
Work from a copy and keep the original untouched. A repair attempt can produce a partial result, and Microsoft explicitly recommends backing up the existing Outlook data file before starting the Inbox Repair Tool.
- Close Outlook and locate the source file. Identify the PST or OST that is failing. Do not work on the only copy; duplicate it to another folder or a separate backup drive.
- Run Microsoft’s SCANPST.EXE. Open the Inbox Repair Tool supplied with your Outlook installation, browse to the copied data file, choose the scan option and save the backup it offers before repair. If Microsoft reports errors, run the tool again as recommended; repeated passes may be necessary.
- Reopen the repaired copy in Outlook. Check folder names, recent messages, attachments, calendar entries and contacts. If the file remains inaccessible or important content is missing, do not overwrite the original with this output.
- Install the desktop Stellar trial when local processing is preferable. Load the copied PST or OST, let the scan finish and use the preview to inspect folders and messages. The preview is the point at which you can judge whether the file contains enough recoverable content to justify a license.
- Apply filters and select an output. Narrow the preview to the folders or items you need, then choose PST, MSG, EML, RTF, HTML or PDF. Choose Technician if you need Office 365 or Live Exchange export, or its split and compact functions.
- Use the online path only when its limits and privacy model fit. Upload one file within the applicable 500 MB free or 5 GB paid limit, wait for browser processing and download the repaired PST before the stated retention period ends.
- Verify before retirement. Open the new output separately, compare high-value messages and attachments with other copies, and confirm that the folders you need are present. Keep the untouched source until verification is complete.

The online service is a separate choice: one PST repair up to 500 MB is advertised as free, while a single-file plan up to 5 GB is listed at $29.99. Free-plan repaired files remain available for 24 hours and paid-plan files for 48 hours, according to Stellar. A large mailbox, multiple files or a need for repeated repairs can make the desktop license more practical than paying per online file.

It is less private than the desktop route because the PST is uploaded to Stellar’s server for automated processing. Stellar says there are no human touchpoints and that free-plan data is erased after 24 hours, with paid-plan data erased after 48 hours. Those windows are short, but they still require you to assess whether company, legal, health or customer information may be sent to a third party.

The file is larger than the online limit
The online service tops out at 5 GB for its paid single-file plan. Use the desktop application for a larger PST, or split the problem only after preserving the original; do not assume that compressing a damaged file will make its contents recoverable.
The scan finds fewer items than expected
Compare the preview with other mailbox copies, exported messages and known folder counts. A low item count can reflect permanent deletion or irreparable corruption, both of which Microsoft also flags as possible limits for ScanPST. Save only after checking the specific messages that matter.
The desktop output will not save or open
Confirm that classic Outlook is installed and compatible with the output workflow found in independent testing. Save to a new location with sufficient free space, keep the source copy intact and try a different export format when you only need individual messages or readable documents.
ScanPST appears to fix the file but Outlook still fails
Run ScanPST again on the backup copy, because Microsoft notes that repeated runs may be needed. If the repaired copy remains unusable, use Stellar’s preview rather than repeatedly modifying the only original.

Password protection or encryption blocks access
Stellar is marketed for encrypted and password-protected files, but access credentials and the condition of the underlying data still matter. Test the copied file in the preview; do not infer recoverability solely from the product’s supported-file description.
Which Stellar option should you choose?
- Choose ScanPST first when the failure looks like ordinary PST corruption, you want a free local attempt and you have made a backup.
- Choose desktop Professional when preview and broader save formats are the priority and you do not need Office 365 or Live Exchange export.

Is Stellar Repair for Outlook worth it?
