If Streamlabs Desktop shows a black preview, an empty game list, or no Game Capture source, start with the documented reset: close the game and Streamlabs, delete the existing Game Capture source, relaunch Streamlabs Desktop with Run as Administrator, reopen the game, and add Game Capture again. - Close the game and Streamlabs Desktop completely.

How do I make Streamlabs capture the correct game window?
When automatic detection fails, stop asking Streamlabs to guess. Select the game directly in the source properties, then test the anti-cheat option.
Use a specific window
Open the Game Capture source properties and set the mode to Capture Specific Window. Pick the running game from the window list. This is more dependable when several games, launchers, or overlays are open at once.

If the game changes its window title or launches through a separate executable, choose Capture foreground window with hotkey. Assign a hotkey, focus the game, and press it. This tells Streamlabs which active window to hook instead of relying on the initial detection.
Toggle the anti-cheat hook
In the same source properties, toggle the anti-cheat compatibility option and test again. Anti-cheat systems can reject a normal hook, while the compatibility mode can allow capture in some titles. If the game has its own anti-cheat policy, follow the game’s rules; a setting that works for one title may fail or be prohibited in another.
Which programs commonly interfere with Game Capture?
Game Capture relies on a software hook. Any program that injects its own overlay, frame counter, monitoring layer, or security scan into the game can take precedence or block that hook.
Disable conflicts for one test session
- Third-party in-game overlays, including chat, recording, or performance overlays.
- FPS counters and hardware-monitoring overlays.
- Antivirus features that scan or inject into running applications.
- RivaTuner Statistics Server.
- MSI Afterburner overlay and monitoring components.
Close these tools temporarily, restart Streamlabs and the game, and test a short recording. Should I change fullscreen mode or use Window Capture?
Yes. Exclusive fullscreen is a frequent reason a hook appears to fail, and some games do not permit Game Capture at all. Switch the game to borderless fullscreen or windowed mode, then try the matching fallback.
Borderless fullscreen
Borderless fullscreen keeps the game at the monitor’s size without taking exclusive control of the display. It often lets a hook or window-based capture remain active while you switch scenes or check the preview.
Window Capture
Add Window Capture and select the game’s window. Use this when Game Capture remains black after the permission, targeting, and conflict checks. Window Capture is also the documented approach for games that block a Game Capture hook, provided the title is running in borderless or windowed mode.
Known blocked-hook examples
OBS states that Destiny 2 and Counter-Strike 2 do not allow its Game Capture hook and recommends Window Capture in borderless or windowed mode. Streamlabs likewise warns that some games are impossible to capture with Game Capture. These are compatibility limits, not evidence that your scene is configured incorrectly.
Why does my laptop show Game Capture but not Window or Display Capture?
On a laptop or all-in-one PC with switchable graphics, the GPU assigned to Streamlabs determines which capture paths are available. Streamlabs says high-performance graphics expose Game Capture, while integrated or power-saving graphics are needed for Display or Window Capture.
- Open Windows Graphics Settings.
- Add Streamlabs Desktop to the app list if it is not already present.
- Add the game’s executable as well.
- For Game Capture, set Streamlabs and the game to High-performance graphics.
- For Display Capture or Window Capture, set both to the Integrated or Power-saving graphics option.
- Restart Streamlabs Desktop and the game after changing either assignment.
Do not mix assignments while testing. Streamlabs notes that a laptop cannot run Streamlabs on both GPUs at once for these capture paths. OBS gives the same general advice for multi-GPU systems: assign the applications to the high-performance GPU when using Game Capture. If a capture method disappears after a GPU change, that can be expected; select the method supported by the active assignment.

What if the game is running but the preview is still black?
Separate a hook failure from a preview or rendering problem. A source can be active while its transform is wrong, and a fullscreen game can stop rendering when it loses focus.
Reset the source transform
Right-click the source in the preview and choose Transform > Reset Transform, then choose Fit to Screen. This restores the source’s position and scale if it was accidentally moved off-canvas or reduced to an unusable size.

Test without alt-tabbing
Some fullscreen games stop drawing frames when they are minimized or alt-tabbed. Record a short clip while the game remains focused, or move the preview to a second monitor so you can observe it without taking focus away. A preview that is blank only after alt-tabbing does not prove that the capture source failed.
Check the source order and visibility
Make sure the Game Capture or Window Capture source is visible in the Sources list and is above opaque images, color layers, or other full-screen sources. This is a scene-composition check, not a hook repair, so perform it after confirming the source is actually receiving frames.
Do I need to install anything or update drivers?
After the capture and GPU checks, repair the Windows components that Streamlabs lists as prerequisites for a stable hook.
- Install or repair the current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Update the graphics driver for the GPU used by Streamlabs and the game.
- Update Streamlabs Desktop and the game to supported versions.
- Restart Windows after the installations and test with a newly created source.
These are maintenance steps, not a reason to purchase a particular utility or hardware product. If the problem began immediately after a driver or game update, record the version and timing; that information helps distinguish a new compatibility issue from a persistent permissions problem.

Streamlabs’ setup guidance labels gameplay sources as Game Capture or Screen Capture. In practice, Window Capture is the focused fallback when a game rejects the hook, while Display or Screen Capture is the broadest fallback when you need everything visible on a monitor.
How can I tell whether the game itself blocks Game Capture?
Use the same game in borderless or windowed mode with Window Capture. If that produces a stable image while Game Capture remains blank after the documented reset, explicit targeting, conflict removal, and GPU checks, the title is likely refusing the hook.
Do not keep escalating permissions or disabling security software indefinitely. Streamlabs says some games cannot be captured with Game Capture, and OBS documents specific blocked-hook examples. Work through these checks in order so each result narrows the cause:
- Close the game and Streamlabs; delete and recreate the Game Capture source.
