Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If Fortnite won’t let you join a game, first check Fortnite’s service status, then note the exact error and whether you’re trying to matchmake, join a party, or enter a custom private match. The cause could be an Epic service issue, a local connection problem, a competitive-content restriction, or a private-match rule—so don’t assume your device is at fault.
1. Check whether Fortnite matchmaking is affected
Start with Epic’s Fortnite Status page and its Live Issues and Bugs page. If matchmaking is listed as affected, wait for Epic to address the incident and try again. A status page showing services operational does not prove the problem is on your device; it only means no relevant incident is currently reported there.
On October 8, 2026, Fortnite Status listed matchmaking as operational and reported no incidents. That is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee about the service when you encounter the problem.
2. Pin down what “can’t join” means
Before changing settings, identify whether you can’t queue into any match, can’t join a friend’s party, see a numbered matchmaking error, are trying to enter competitive content, or are joining a custom private match. Those situations have different rules and error messages. If other people in your party can play while you cannot, note that too; it helps distinguish a broader service problem from an issue affecting one player or device.

3. Understand the numbered matchmaking errors
| Error | What Epic says it can mean | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Matchmaking Error #1 | Epic documents more than one version. A general message describes failure to connect to a match; tournament-specific text may say the Battle Bus has already departed. | Read the full message. If it indicates a connection failure, check status and follow the connection steps below. If it is tournament-specific, the queue may have closed for that match. |
| Matchmaking Error #2 | The message may describe trouble connecting to the content beacon service, or say you do not have permission to play competitive content. | Use the exact wording to tell a connection problem from a competitive eligibility restriction. Connection troubleshooting will not grant eligibility. |
| Matchmaking Error #3 | Epic reproduces the in-game wording: “Looks like all the Battle Buses headed out are full. Give it another shot in a few minutes, if it keeps up, visit our status page.” | Try again in a few minutes, then check status if the problem continues. |
| Matchmaking Error #5 | Epic says Fortnite could not connect you to a match, usually because of a server issue or network connection problem. | Check service status, restart Fortnite, and use Epic’s connection troubleshooting guide. |
| Matchmaking Error #7 | Epic includes Error #7 in its support article about Errors #5 and #7, but the available description here does not establish a specific cause for #7. | Follow the message and the linked official support guidance rather than assuming it has the same cause as Error #5. |
Epic’s support article describes Error #5 as appearing when Fortnite cannot connect a player to a match and says it is usually caused by a server or network connection problem. Its separate article on Errors #1, #2, and #3 shows why the exact wording matters: Error #2, in particular, can indicate lack of permission for competitive content, not simply a bad connection.
4. Restart Fortnite, then choose connection checks that fit
For Error #5, Epic recommends restarting Fortnite and, if the problem persists, following its connection troubleshooting guide. The guide covers inability to matchmake, connect to Fortnite games, or join parties, as well as packet loss and high latency. Its options include:

These are diagnostic options, not guaranteed fixes. Choose steps that match your platform and symptom; Windows-specific actions do not apply to every console or device. If you are unsure how to change a network or system setting, consult the relevant device instructions before doing so.
5. If you’re joining a party or private match
Joining a friend’s party
Epic’s connection guide treats inability to join a Fortnite party as a possible connection symptom. Check whether Fortnite services are operating, restart the game, and use the connection guide if party joining still fails.

Joining a custom private match
Custom private matches have rules that do not apply to ordinary public matchmaking. Epic’s guide requires participants to use the host’s region and the correct playlist, enter a valid key, and join before the match starts. Once play begins, the custom lobby closes to new joiners. Ask the host to confirm the region, playlist, and key, and try again before the next match starts.

If the status page shows matchmaking as operational and relevant connection checks have not helped, contact Epic Player Support. Include your platform, the full error text or number, what you were trying to join, and whether other party members could enter. Epic’s documentation does not establish a response-time guarantee or confirm that every unreported matchmaking problem is a known bug.
