Unknown Worlds revealed Subnautica 2 during the Xbox Partner Preview on October 17, 2024. The announcement described it as a sequel to Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero, set on a new planet beyond Planet 4546B. Its teaser introduced the underwater setting and creatures, but did not give a specific launch day; the stated goal was Early Access in 2025. Did Subnautica 2 release in 2025?
No. The 2025 date was the original target, not the final release date. On July 9, 2025, Unknown Worlds announced that it was moving the Early Access release to 2026 after private community playtests. The studio said feedback highlighted areas for improvement in the environment, creatures and story, and that it wanted more time before release. It also described planned additions for that extra development time, including more biomes, vehicle upgrades, tools, story expansion and creatures; those were plans announced at the time, not guarantees about the finished game. Subnautica 2 Early Access release date and platforms
Subnautica 2 entered Early Access on May 14, 2026. Unknown Worlds’ release announcement links to Steam, Epic Games Store and the Xbox/Microsoft Store. Xbox’s May 2026 feature also listed Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and ROG Xbox Ally, with access through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Solo play, co-op and cross-platform multiplayer
You can play alone or invite up to three friends, for four players total. Xbox described co-op as cross-platform and said players can invite friends on other platforms. Multiplayer is optional; the game can be played solo. In Xbox’s May 2026 feature, Unknown Worlds programmer Sam Dark described inviting friends across platforms as a menu-based process.
