The studio said it needed more time to act on playtest feedback and add content. The delay unfolded amid a public dispute between publisher Krafton and the game’s former leaders—but the game has since launched in Early Access, and the parties later settled their legal dispute.
Why was Subnautica 2 delayed?
Unknown Worlds said community playtests had produced positive feedback on the environment, creatures, story, and overall direction, while also revealing areas that needed work. The studio said it wanted more time to respond to that feedback and add content before release. It announced the move to 2026 on July 9, 2025, writing, “With that in mind, we’ve made the decision to delay Subnautica 2’s Early Access release to 2026.” Unknown Worlds’ announcement is the source for that public explanation; it describes the studio’s stated reasons, not an independently established account of every cause behind the delay.

The studio said planned additions included more biomes, vehicle upgrades, tools, story expansion, and creatures. These were announced plans, not a guarantee that every item would be present at a particular release date.
What was the Krafton–Unknown Worlds dispute about?
The delay became entangled with a conflict over the running of Unknown Worlds and a performance earn-out tied to the studio’s former leaders. Krafton, Unknown Worlds’ parent and publisher, removed studio executives in July 2025. The Delaware Court of Chancery’s opinion recounts the leadership changes and board action requiring further review before Early Access release. The former executives alleged that Krafton’s conduct and the delay were connected to the earn-out; that allegation should not be treated as a court finding. Yonhap reported that the earn-out could be worth up to US$250 million.

The court opinion describes the litigation record, including the parties’ competing accounts and the court’s actions. It also recounts a Krafton finance projection of “over 1.67 million copies sold by Q4 2025” under a hypothetical August 2025 launch scenario. That was a forecast considered in the litigation, not a realized sales result. Read the Delaware Court of Chancery opinion.
Did Krafton and the former executives settle?
Yes. Yonhap reported on July 1, 2026, that Krafton and the former executives settled their bonus dispute and withdrew pending lawsuits. The report said Unknown Worlds would continue leading development while Krafton provided support. A Krafton official told Yonhap, “Krafton and Unknown Worlds are focusing on the development and official launch of Subnautica 2, putting fan experience as our utmost priority.” Yonhap’s report covers the settlement and the company’s statement.

When did Subnautica 2 come out in Early Access?
Subnautica 2 launched in Early Access in May 2026. Yonhap reported that more than 4 million copies had been sold following the launch, attributing that figure to a company update. It is a reported sales figure, not an independently audited total. The 2025 announcement therefore describes a past delay, not a release that is still pending.
