Subnautica: Below Zero received generally favorable reviews, with critics praising its underwater exploration and more prominent story. The trade-off is a smaller, more directed world than the original Subnautica; on Nintendo Switch, some reviewers also reported performance imperfections. The verdict depends on platform and on whether you want a tighter adventure or the first game’s greater sense of scale.

Underwater exploration still leads
The central appeal remains exploring, gathering resources, crafting tools, surviving environmental hazards and building a habitat. The setting shifts to icy biomes on Planet 4546B, with areas to explore both beneath the water and above the surface. Unknown Worlds describes those systems on its official game page; Steam likewise presents it as a single-player underwater adventure by Unknown Worlds Entertainment.

A more prominent story gives the journey direction
Compared with the original, Below Zero puts more emphasis on characters and narrative progression. Critics who welcomed that change found it gave the adventure clearer direction while retaining the exploration-and-survival foundation. IGN’s PC review, quoted on Metacritic, called it “a leaner, meaner standalone expansion to Subnautica that improves on the story and mechanics, but doesn’t give us as much room to explore.” That is IGN’s assessment, not an official description.
How it compares with the first Subnautica
The most consequential difference in the reviews is scale. Critics describe Below Zero as smaller and more directed than Subnautica. That can suit players who prefer a clearer narrative path, but it may disappoint those who most value the original’s expansive, isolated feeling and freedom to explore.
- Choose Below Zero if: you want another survival-and-crafting expedition, with a stronger character-focused story and a more guided sense of progression.
- The original may suit you better if: you are looking primarily for a larger world and a greater feeling of open-ended discovery.
It is not simply a guided narrative adventure: hunger, thirst, resource gathering, crafting and dangerous wildlife remain part of the survival experience. The publisher’s description of the game highlights those systems alongside habitat building.

Do the reviews differ by platform?
PC
The PC Metacritic page showed an 82 Metascore from 30 critic reviews when accessed October 8, 2026. That score reflects the listed PC reviews; it should not be applied automatically to console versions.
Nintendo Switch
The Switch page showed a 76 Metascore from 10 critic reviews on the same date. Its review excerpts include praise for a solid portable port as well as reports of stuttering, pop-in or more disruptive performance issues. Those observations are specific to Switch reviews and do not establish how the game performs on PC or other consoles.
What player reviews say
Steam’s audience reviews are a separate measure from critics’ Metascores. On October 8, 2026, Steam showed 89% positive among 55,667 English-language user reviews overall, and 87% positive among 367 recent reviews. Both figures can move as players post reviews; they are not critic scores or a platform-wide rating. See the Steam listing for the current figures and game details.
Is Subnautica: Below Zero worth playing?
The favorable critic reception supports recommending it to players who want more exploration and survival in the Subnautica setting, especially if a stronger story and clearer direction appeal to them. Its smaller world is the main reason a fan of the original might prefer that game instead. Switch players should weigh the platform-specific performance reports rather than assuming the PC reception applies unchanged.
