Controls and accessibility features
Button, stick, and motion controls
Nintendo says players can choose between button-and-stick controls and motion controls. The collection adapts the games for Switch play, giving players a choice rather than requiring motion controls for every session. Control availability can depend on how the system is being played and the controllers in use.
Switch 2 mouse controls
On Switch 2, Nintendo says a second player can use mouse controls to collect Star Bits and attack enemies. This supplements the listed single-system one- or two-player modes; Nintendo’s product listing identifies one or two players on one system.

Assist Mode
Nintendo’s Canada bundle description says Assist Mode provides additional health and helps players recover after falls. It is an option for players who want more forgiveness while working through the games, rather than a separate game or purchase. Feature details are described on Nintendo Canada’s bundle listing.
Storybook chapters and music
Nintendo says the Switch release adds Storybook material and an in-game music player called Soundtrack Mode. The new Storybook chapters offer additional character material, while Soundtrack Mode lets players listen to music from the games. Nintendo’s product pages do not establish further detail about the amount of added story content, so these additions are best understood as supplementary features rather than a separate campaign.
Rank #3
- A variety of playable characters are available, some with unique attributes that affect gameplay and platforming physics.
- Younger and less-experienced players will love playing as Toadette, who is brand new to both games, and Nabbit, who was formerly only playable in New Super Luigi U. Both characters offer extra assistance during play.
- Multiplayer sessions are even more fun, frantic, and exciting thanks to entertaining character interactions. Need a boost? Try jumping off a teammate’s head or getting a teammate to throw you.
- Features a wealth of help features, like a Hints gallery, reference videos, and a Super Guide in New Super Mario Bros. U that can complete levels for you if they’re giving you trouble.
- Three additional modes—Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle—mix up gameplay and add replayability, while also upping the difficulty for players who want to try something harder. Players can use their Mii characters in these modes.
Optional amiibo and book
Nintendo announced two game-specific amiibo figures for April 2, 2026. Scanning Mario & Luma grants a Life Mushroom in either game; Rosalina & Lumas grants a 1-Up Mushroom. These are optional figures, not requirements for playing either title. Nintendo also announced an illustrated hardcover edition of Rosalina’s Storybook, featuring the original art and story from Super Mario Galaxy; it is a related book, not a game manual or required accessory. See Nintendo’s announcement for the announced merchandise details. Check current local listings for availability.
