Super Mario RPG’s Nintendo Switch remake is a faithful, colorful return to Mario’s first role-playing adventure. It refreshes the 1996 Super Nintendo game with updated visuals and rearranged music while keeping its turn-based battles, timing-based commands, humor, and cast of unlikely allies intact. Nintendo Life reviewer Alana Hagues praised its charm and post-game content, while noting occasional frame drops and a level of challenge that may feel slight to some players.
What is Super Mario RPG on Switch?
Released on 17 November 2023, Super Mario RPG for Nintendo Switch is a remake of the 1996 Super Nintendo game—not a new entry in the series. Its story sends Mario after the Star Road is broken, bringing him together with Princess Peach, Bowser, Mallow, and Geno to take on the Smithy Gang.

The adventure mixes exploration with turn-based combat. Its settings include forests, sewers, and rivers, with treasure and minigames along the way. The straightforward premise and bright presentation make it approachable, while the unusual party and comic tone give this Mario adventure its own identity.

Visuals and presentation
The remake updates the original’s visuals without abandoning its identity. Hagues describes the result as faithful, charming, and full of humor. That is the reviewer’s assessment rather than a claim of independent technical testing, but it captures the remake’s central appeal: a more modern presentation around the same recognizable adventure.

Post-game content
The review highlights post-game content as a welcome addition to the remake. It gives returning players more to do after the main adventure, though the available details do not establish how much additional playtime it provides.

What is combat like, and is it too easy?
Combat remains turn-based, with timed Action Commands adding a small but important layer of active input. Time an attack correctly to increase its damage; time a defense correctly to reduce or avoid incoming damage. Nintendo says a perfectly timed attack can hit every enemy, while a perfectly timed defense can prevent damage.
Successful Action Commands fill an Action Gauge used for party-specific Triple Moves. If battles feel challenging, Nintendo says players can select Breezy difficulty. On the other hand, players looking for a demanding RPG may find the base game too easy: Hagues flags modest difficulty as a possible drawback, particularly for players who already know the adventure.

Is it a good first Mario RPG?
It can be a welcoming first step for someone curious about turn-based role-playing games. The battle system explains itself through simple commands and timing, and the playful story keeps the journey grounded in familiar Mario characters. The same accessibility that helps newcomers may disappoint players who want sustained difficulty or elaborate combat systems.
For fans of the original, the decision is more about presentation and convenience than a radically different game: the remake refreshes the visuals and music, preserves the core adventure, and adds post-game content. Those who value the original soundtrack can switch to it, but must first clear the game to unlock the Sound Player.

Nintendo Life’s 2023 review by Alana Hagues awarded the remake 9/10, praising its updated presentation, humor, rearranged soundtrack, and post-game content. Its caveats were occasional frame drops in water-heavy areas and when returning from cutscenes to battles, alongside a base game that may be too familiar or easy for some players. Those performance observations belong to that review; they should not be read as results from independent testing.
