The reliable way to keep superhero timelines straight is to maintain one checklist per continuity, choose either release order or in-universe order for that checklist, and record watched titles in a tracker that will not silently lose your progress. Start a first MCU run with release order; use Disney+’s current Complete Timeline for a rewatch or lore map. Keep the 2013–2023 DCEU separate from the DCU that began with Creature Commandos in 2024, and label The Batman and Joker as Elseworlds rather than forcing them into either list.
This system also prevents the most common mistake: treating every Marvel, DC, Spider-Man, X-Men and television title as one mega-universe. The sections below show what belongs together, which order fits your goal, how to save checkmarks across devices, and how to build a short catch-up list when a theatrical deadline matters more than completeness.

What is the simplest way to track a shared-universe timeline?
Use four decisions before you watch anything:
- Separate continuities. Create distinct lists for the MCU, DCEU, new DCU, Fox X-Men, Sony Spider-Man films, and any other universe you follow.
- Choose an order. Release order protects first-time reveals; in-universe chronology is better for a second pass; an essentials cut is for a deadline.
- Define the scope. Decide whether your MCU list contains films only, all Disney+ seasons, One-Shots, specials, animation and the Netflix-era shows, or only titles needed for a particular story.
- Use one progress system. A browser-local checklist is convenient but fragile. A signed-in tracker or a paper backup is safer when you switch devices.
Write the date and scope at the top of the list. “MCU films, release order” and “MCU Complete Timeline, including every season” are different projects, so a checkmark is meaningful only when you know which project it belongs to.
Which MCU watch order should I use?
For a first viewing, use release order beginning with Iron Man (2008). WatchOrders gives the same advice: chronological order is a stronger second pass, while a first chronological run can reveal where later stories are set and spoil discoveries that were designed for release order.

Release order for a first watch
Release order follows the cinema or Disney+ debut sequence and the Phases that build toward crossover films. Post-credit scenes land in the sequence in which Marvel Studios designed them, so character introductions, callbacks and the scale of each crossover develop naturally. The WatchOrders essential release-order cut is listed at 94 hours 7 minutes, useful when you want the narrative shape without every optional title.
In-universe chronology for a rewatch
Chronological order places events by story date. It starts with material set in the 1940s and 1990s before moving through the modern era, but exact years are not always fixed. Loki and What If…? operate outside a normal single timeline, and the studio may move a title when its interpretation of continuity changes. The official Disney+ list is therefore the safest current reference, not a fan-made year calculation.
MCU Watchlist uses narrative coherence when dates conflict, cross-checking official statements, Disney+ placement and fan chronology. That is a useful editorial choice for a rewatch, but it does not make chronology the superior first-watch order.
Essentials and speed-run cuts
If you are catching up for Avengers: Doomsday, use an essentials list instead of trying to consume every season and special. Esquire Philippines reports approximately 230 hours for a maximal “Road to Doomsday” list, about 95 hours for its movies-only version and about 33 hours for a 15-title speed run. Those are publishers’ compiled runtimes, not an independent timing test. Disney+ also has a “Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday” playlist; a Reddit tracker counted 15 titles in that selection, with Loki seasons treated separately.
What does Disney+’s official MCU timeline include?
Disney+ is Marvel Studios’ current, living canon board. Marvel.com’s 22 October 2026 guide tells viewers to open the Marvel brand page on Disney+ and choose either the MCU Movie Timeline or the MCU Complete Timeline. The Complete view includes films and television seasons as separate entries and is republished when Marvel changes the placement.

The published Complete Timeline on 22 October 2026 begins with Eyes of Wakanda, then Captain America: The First Avenger, the Agent Carter One-Shot and Captain Marvel, before Iron Man. It runs through VisionQuest. Netflix-era seasons of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher appear in-season, along with I Am Groot, Loki, What If…?, Marvel Zombies, Thunderbolts*, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Wonder Man, Daredevil: Born Again season 2 and The Punisher: One Last Kill.
Marvel Studios executive Brad Winderbaum called Disney+ the studio’s “medium to define the canon now.” The Netflix shows were added after his January 2024 comments that he was comfortable treating Daredevil as part of the Sacred Timeline. The Direct reported another republish in June 2026 that swapped Wonder Man and Daredevil: Born Again season 2; the October list subsequently placed VisionQuest after the special. Treat screenshots and old fan spreadsheets as dated snapshots.
How do I save MCU checkmarks without losing them?
Pick one tracker and stay with it. Local browser storage is fast but disappears when site data is cleared or when you move to another browser. A Google-signed tracker is more suitable for a television, phone and desktop workflow.

For a simple setup, use Disney+ to confirm placement, then mirror only the titles you intend to watch in one tracker. If you need cross-device continuity, sign in to the Reddit tracker or export a spreadsheet; do not maintain three competing checklists.
Is the official MCU timeline book still useful?
Yes, but only as a Phase 1–4 reference. DK’s The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline was released on 24 October 2023, runs 344 pages and lists ISBN 0744090997 and 9780744090994. Anthony Breznican, Amy Ratcliffe and ReBecca Theodore-Vachon created it in close collaboration with Marvel Studios, with infographics and stills covering the Sacred Timeline from before the Big Bang through the Blip and the Multiverse.

Brad Winderbaum described the book as the first time the studio was “officially laying out the timeline.” Its own scope statement limits the printed sequence to Marvel Studios projects through Phase Four on Earth-616. It originally omitted productions made by other companies; the Netflix series were later added to Disney+ but not to a confirmed new print edition. Searches did not surface a 2025 or 2026 updated volume covering Phases Five and Six, so use the book for historical context and Disney+ for current placement.
How should I track the DCEU and the new DCU?
Keep two separate lists. The DCEU is the closed film continuity that ran from Man of Steel (2013) through Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023). The DCU is the rebooted continuity that began with Creature Commandos in 2024 and is still expanding.

Cinopsys recommends release order for a first DCEU run and the single chronological adjustment above for a rewatch. For the DCU, treat the list as open: James Gunn has described it as an alternate universe in which stories can occur at different locations or times, while also saying it is not completely disconnected. Clayface is connected, set before Superman, and is the first DCU film explicitly out of chronological order. Do not use that flexibility as a reason to merge the Gunn-era titles with the DCEU.
Where do Spider-Man, X-Men and the Arrowverse belong?
Keep adjacent Marvel and DC material in labeled side collections rather than silently adding it to the MCU or DCU. The Fox X-Men films are a different Earth; the Raimi and Webb Spider-Man films are optional side quests in Road to Doomsday; and an animated Spider-Verse is not automatically an MCU entry.

How much time does a complete timeline require?
Use published estimates to choose a realistic scope. Runtimes vary with the edition, episode count and titles a guide includes.

Marvel’s in-universe present day is reported as 2028 as of Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), but that story date is not a viewing requirement. It is a reminder that “chronological” lists can span decades, branches and alternate realities without becoming a single ordinary calendar.

- Create a master sheet with a continuity column. Use values such as MCU, DCEU, DCU, Elseworlds, Fox X-Men and Sony Spider-Man. Add format (film, season, special, One-Shot or animation) so seasons are not mistaken for one long title.
- Choose your default order. Mark the list as Release, Disney+ Complete, or Essentials. Never switch modes halfway through without recording the change.
- Record status, date and version. Use “watched,” “skipped,” “optional” and “not yet released,” plus the date you copied the list. This preserves your context when Disney+ republishes its order.
- Back up local progress. Export a spreadsheet or screenshot before clearing browser data, changing browsers or using private browsing. Local checkmarks do not follow you automatically.
- Schedule by available hours. Road to Doomsday’s 230-hour estimate translated to roughly 13 hours a week from mid-August 2026 to the 18 December 2026 theatrical date. Recalculate from your own start date instead of assuming that pace.
- Review scope before adding a title. If a tracker adds a new special or adjacent film, decide whether it belongs to your project before marking it watched.
Where can I watch these titles?
Availability is regional and changes through licensing deals. Esquire Philippines placed the Road to Doomsday MCU titles on Disney+, with some Spider-Man films also on Netflix and the Tobey Maguire trilogy described there as Netflix-only. What’s On Disney Plus notes that Sony and Universal arrangements leave holes in some countries. MCU Watchlist maintains a US guide spanning Disney+, Netflix, Max and Hulu, but that guide should be checked for your country and date.
DCU theatrical films and series are associated with cinema releases and Max/HBO distribution, including series such as Lanterns and Peacemaker. Do not treat a service’s catalog as proof of canon: use Disney+ or the relevant studio’s continuity information for order, then check your local services for playback.
How should I prepare for Avengers: Doomsday?
The sources place Avengers: Doomsday in theaters on 18 December 2026. Because that date and the associated playlist are time-sensitive, confirm them near your viewing window. If you have months, use release order or the full Disney+ Complete Timeline. If you have weeks, select Disney+’s Countdown playlist, the WatchOrders essentials cut or Road to Doomsday’s 15-title run and leave the 230-hour list for later.

Keep the Fox mutant entries visibly labeled as “Doomsday side scope” if your chosen checklist includes them. That notation prevents a temporary event checklist from being mistaken for a claim that every legacy film belongs to the MCU’s main continuity.
What mistakes make timeline tracking fail?
- One mega-list: It hides which continuity a title belongs to and makes a completed list impossible to interpret.
- Chronology on a first watch: It can reveal later-story placement and undercut release-order surprises.
- Mixing seasons and films: A season-by-season list is longer but more accurate than one checkbox for an entire series.
- Trusting an old screenshot: Disney+ has republished its Complete Timeline, so record the date of your copy.
- Assuming every checkmark syncs: Road to Doomsday, MCU Watchlist, WatchOrders and many apps store progress locally.
- Counting availability as canon: Licensing determines where a title streams, not which universe it belongs to.
- Forcing Elseworlds into canon: The Batman and Joker should remain their own labeled collection.

The method prioritizes studio authority for placement, release order for spoiler-safe first watches, Disney+ chronology for rewatching, explicit continuity labels, season-level granularity, and progress persistence across devices. Runtime figures come from the named publishers above; no independent study establishes a universally “best” order.

Can I use a paper checklist instead of an app?
Yes. A dated printout is immune to browser-storage loss and is useful beside a television. Write the continuity, order type and edition date at the top, then update the sheet when Disney+ republishes its Complete Timeline.
Why does a title sometimes appear twice in a tracker?
Shared-universe apps may place one title in more than one collection, such as a Marvel legacy list and a Spider-Man list. In Geeks Watchlist, marking it watched in one collection marks it in the other, so duplicate appearances do not mean duplicate viewings.
Should animated MCU entries count toward a movie-only marathon?
Only if your chosen scope says so. The Complete Timeline includes animation such as What If…?, I Am Groot and Marvel Zombies, while a movie-only cut intentionally excludes them; record the scope rather than treating either choice as the sole correct canon list.
How do I keep a list after switching phones?
Prefer a Google-signed tracker or export your checklist to a spreadsheet before changing devices. Apps and sites that store marks only on-device will not transfer automatically, even when the title catalog itself is identical.
