That reported figure follows the studio’s August announcement of a redundancy consultation expected to affect up to 75 colleagues; it is not a company-confirmed final total.
What happened at Supermassive Games?
On October 5, Tindle wrote on LinkedIn that his own role had been at risk and that his last day at the studio had arrived after 16 years. He said more than 70 colleagues were leaving, naming developers, artists, producers, quality-assurance staff, operations employees and others. PC Gamer quoted Tindle’s post; VGC also reported the figure and the roles he listed.
Tindle praised the departing staff, saying, “Any studio would be lucky to have them.” His account is the basis for the more-than-70 figure; Supermassive has not been shown in the available reporting to have confirmed that as the final number.
Why do reports cite both 75 and more than 70?
The figures refer to different statements made at different stages. On August 11, Supermassive said it had begun a redundancy consultation that it anticipated would result in the loss of up to 75 colleagues. That was the company’s forecast for the consultation, not a final tally. PC Gamer reported the announcement and its stated rationale, and Game Informer reproduced the company’s statement.

The two numbers are broadly consistent, but they should not be treated as two official measurements of the same finalized figure. PC Gamer said it did not know how many staff would remain after the cuts. The reporting available as of October 7 does not establish the studio’s remaining headcount or a precise company-confirmed outcome.
What reason has Supermassive given?
In its August statement, the studio described the consultation as “a necessary step to help ensure the sustainability of the company” and said supporting affected people was its priority during the process. That is the stated rationale; the reporting does not establish a more specific cause or quantify the financial impact of this round.

Supermassive released Directive 8020 on May 12, 2026, roughly three months before announcing the consultation. The timing alone does not show that the game’s performance caused the layoffs. Game Informer lists the release date and platforms; PC Gamer cautioned against treating reception of the game as an established explanation for the workforce decision.

Supermassive is a British developer based in Guildford, Surrey, known for Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology. VGC reports that Bandai Namco published the first four Dark Pictures games, while Supermassive self-published Directive 8020. It also reported a separate round in July 2025 in which more than 30 developers were made redundant, linking that round to a delay of Directive 8020. VGC’s October report provides that background.

Those earlier cuts are separate from the 2026 consultation. Reports also refer to layoffs in 2024, but the available accounts do not reconcile the rounds and counting methods into a reliable cumulative total, so adding them together would risk overstating what is known.
