For most Surface Pro owners, the safest way to install firmware and drivers is Windows Update, with the Surface app used to check update status. Download a Microsoft .msi package only when you need an offline install, are repairing a failed update, are imaging several identical devices, or need tightly controlled deployment. The .msi must match the exact Surface Pro model and Windows build; using the wrong package can leave firmware components unchanged or cause installation errors. Microsoft’s current download page is Download drivers and firmware for Surface Pro.
This guide explains both update paths, lists the current package IDs, shows how to match filenames to Windows builds, and gives model-specific servicing end dates.

Which way should I update Surface Pro firmware?
Choose Windows Update for routine updates; choose an MSI when the device is offline, an automatic installation has failed, or you are preparing multiple machines of the same model. Manual packages provide control but also make model and build selection your responsibility.
| Situation | Best method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday personal use | Windows Update, checked through the Surface app | Microsoft recommends the automatic channel and it selects applicable updates. |
| Installation troubleshooting | Model-specific MSI | A direct reinstall can address a failed or incomplete automatic installation. |
| No internet on the target device | Download the MSI elsewhere and transfer it by USB | The package can be copied to an offline Surface for installation. |
| Several identical business devices | Staged MSI deployment | IT can control model and Windows-version matching during imaging or deployment. |
| Surface Pro X | Windows Update | Microsoft directs Surface Pro X owners to Windows Update rather than a listed MSI. |
How do I update Surface Pro drivers automatically?
Windows Update is the normal path. The Surface app provides a convenient status check and points you to available updates, including optional driver entries.
- Connect any accessories that should receive firmware: the Surface Pro Type Cover, Surface Pen, or Surface Dock.
- Charge the Surface to at least 40 percent, leave it connected to power, and keep it turned on.
- Connect to a stable internet connection.
- Open the Surface app.
- Expand Help & support and check the update status.
- Select Check for updates when that option appears, then allow Windows Update to complete the installation.
- After the main update process finishes, open Windows Update’s Optional updates area and install available driver entries whose names include “Surface.”
Keep the accessories attached until the process is complete. A Type Cover, Pen, or Dock can have its own firmware delivered as part of the update session.
How do I install a Surface Pro firmware MSI manually?
Manual installation is intended for offline recovery, controlled deployment, imaging, and troubleshooting. Download only from Microsoft’s Surface Pro drivers and firmware page.

- Identify the exact Surface Pro generation, processor variant, and connectivity variant. For example, Surface Pro 9 Intel and Surface Pro 9 with 5G (SQ3) use different packages.
- Check the installed Windows release and build in Settings > System > About or Settings > Windows Update.
- Open the model’s Microsoft Download Center entry and select Download.
- Choose the .msi filename that matches both the Surface model and Windows version. Microsoft examples include
SurfaceLaptop7_ARM_Win11_26100_25.101.12926.0.msiandSurfacePro8_Win11_22621_25.083.35877.0.msi. - If Microsoft does not list an exact match for your installed Windows build, select the closest package with a lower build number. Do not substitute a higher build simply because its version looks newer.
- Run the downloaded .msi and follow the installer prompts.
- For an offline device, copy the file to a USB drive, safely move it to the Surface, and run it locally.
The package naming convention identifies the product, Windows release, build, version, and revision. For example, SurfacePro11_Win11_26100_24.091.12892.0.msi denotes a Surface Pro 11th Edition Snapdragon package for Windows 11 build 26100. A filename match is more reliable than selecting a package by a similar-sounding model name.

A Surface .msi is cumulative rather than a single-driver download. Depending on the model, one package can contain several device-level updates released together.
- UEFI firmware
- System Aggregator Module
- Battery and battery-monitoring components
- Keyboard controller and embedded controller firmware
- Wi-Fi and LTE components
- Video components
- SSD firmware
- Intel Management Engine components on applicable Intel models
Because these components interact, install the complete model package instead of extracting one device entry from it. IT administrators can stage the cumulative package by model and Windows version when building system images or deploying to a fleet.
Why must I connect the Type Cover, Pen, or Dock before updating?
Microsoft instructs owners to attach supported accessories during the update so their firmware can be included. A connected Type Cover, Pen, or Dock is detected as part of the update session; leaving it disconnected can postpone that accessory’s firmware update even if the Surface itself updates successfully.
Power and battery conditions also matter. The documented preparation is at least 40 percent battery, AC power connected, the Surface turned on, and a stable internet connection for automatic updates. These conditions reduce the chance of an interrupted firmware operation.

Why is my Surface Pro not getting firmware updates?
Start by separating an eligibility problem from an installation problem. A model may be outside its servicing period, Windows Update may not yet have offered an applicable package, or a manual MSI may not match the installed build.
Check the model and servicing status
Confirm the generation in Settings > System > About, then compare it with Microsoft’s lifecycle dates below. Devices past the end date can still use previously released packages, but Microsoft no longer publishes new driver or firmware updates for them.
Check Windows Update and optional drivers
Use the Surface app’s Help & support > Check for updates path, finish the normal update run, and inspect Optional updates for entries containing “Surface.” This catches driver items that are not presented in the main update list.
Check an MSI selection
For a manual install, verify the exact model, processor or LTE variant, Windows release, and build encoded in the filename. If there is no exact build, use Microsoft’s closest lower build package. A package for another generation is not a substitute.
Check accessories and power
Reconnect the Type Cover, Pen, or Dock, meet the 40-percent battery minimum, connect AC power, and keep the device online and awake while using the automatic path.

Use the model’s update history
Microsoft maintains a separate update-history page for each Surface Pro generation. The model page records supported Windows versions, release notes, fixes, and component versions shown in Device Manager. Compare those component versions with the entries on your Surface when you need to determine whether an update actually installed.
Are Surface Pro drivers still supported?
Support is model-specific. Microsoft’s policy provides at least four years of driver and firmware updates for devices released before January 1, 2021, and at least six years for devices released on or after that date. The servicing end date is the point after which new packages stop; old packages remain downloadable.

For an out-of-service model, Microsoft’s older packages can still be useful when reinstalling Windows or repairing a component, but there will be no newly published firmware after the listed date.
How can I verify which firmware installed?
Use the Surface Pro generation’s Microsoft update-history page to see the release date, supported Windows versions, fixes, and component versions. Then open Device Manager and inspect the relevant entries, such as UEFI, System Aggregator, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, keyboard, or other components named in the package. The history page is the reference for what a particular release was intended to change; Device Manager shows what is present on your machine.
For example, Microsoft’s Surface Pro 9 history includes 2026 releases addressing security vulnerabilities, trusted-accessory verification, unexpected shutdowns, battery monitoring, clock reliability, keyboard behavior, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, UEFI, and Surface integration components. The release notes help distinguish a normal cumulative update from a hardware fault that needs separate troubleshooting.

What are the risks of manual firmware installation?
The main risk is selecting a package for the wrong model or Windows build. Manual installation also gives you no automatic model detection, so keep the downloaded file with its model and build notes when staging it for another device.
- Do not use an MSI for a different Surface Pro generation or processor variant.
- Do not choose a higher Windows build when Microsoft instructs you to use the closest lower build.
- Do not disconnect power or force a shutdown during installation.
- Do not assume an old package means the model is still receiving new releases; download availability continues after servicing ends.
- If the installer refuses to run, return to the model page, recheck the Windows build, and use Windows Update for models Microsoft does not provide as an MSI.
Which update path is best for gaming on a Surface Pro?
Use the same firmware policy whether the Surface Pro is used for games, school, or work: keep Windows Update current and install the cumulative package appropriate to the model when automatic servicing cannot be used. Firmware updates cover platform components such as UEFI, storage, wireless, battery, and controllers; they are maintenance releases, not a promise of higher game frame rates. For a gaming setup with a Type Cover, Dock, or other supported accessory attached, include that accessory during the update so its firmware is not left behind.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFrequently Asked Questions
Can I keep using an older Surface Pro after its firmware support ends?
Yes. The device and previously released packages do not disappear when servicing ends. You should understand, however, that Microsoft will no longer publish new driver or firmware fixes for that model after its lifecycle date.
How do I identify whether my Surface Pro is an Intel or Snapdragon model?
Open Settings, choose System, then About and review the processor information and model description. Use that information together with the generation and any 5G or LTE designation when selecting a Download Center entry.
Can I copy a Surface Pro MSI to another computer?
You can copy the file to a USB drive and run it on another Surface, but the receiving device must be the same supported model and Windows-build family named by the package. A shared folder or USB transfer does not remove the requirement for an exact model match.
Where can I see what changed in a specific Surface Pro release?
Open the Microsoft update-history page for your Surface Pro generation. It lists the release date, supported Windows versions, fixes, and component versions, which you can compare with Device Manager on your device.
