No—not in the PC sense. Cities: Skylines Nintendo Switch Edition runs on Nintendo Switch 2, but that backward compatibility does not add Steam Workshop, Paradox Mods, or a way to import PC-made buildings, vehicles, props, meshes, textures, or code. The Switch 2-specific Cities: Skylines – Expanded Edition, released October 28, 2026, adds a built-in map editor and larger city-building tools instead. You can create landscapes and maps inside the game, but currently documented Switch 2 features do not include an external mod browser or custom-asset importer.

Can you use Cities: Skylines mods on Switch 2?

The original Nintendo Switch Edition is supported on Switch 2, with Nintendo describing its behavior as consistent with the Nintendo Switch version. That statement covers compatibility, not access to the PC mod ecosystem. Neither the original edition nor the Expanded Edition is documented as supporting Steam Workshop subscriptions, Paradox Mods for the original game, or imported user files.

In practical terms, you can use the content shipped with your Switch game and the in-game creation tools provided by the Expanded Edition. You cannot follow a PC guide that tells you to subscribe to a Workshop item, copy files into an Addons folder, or install a custom asset package and expect the same process to work on Nintendo’s console.

What can you create on Switch 2 without external mods?

Switch 2 supports more built-in creation than the original console release. Those features are part of the game software, so they do not require downloaded community files.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Build maps with the Expanded Edition editor

Cities: Skylines – Expanded Edition includes a map editor described by Nintendo as a way to “create and customize your own landscapes and maps before you start building.” You can shape the starting environment and then begin a city on that map. This is in-game editing, not an importer for a heightmap, model, texture, or map package made on a computer.

Use a larger city footprint

The Expanded Edition raises the stated buildable area to 25 tiles, up from the original nine-tile limit. The additional space changes how far a city can spread, but it does not mean that external terrain or asset files can be added.

Adjust presentation and placement

The Switch 2 edition adds controls for time of day, rain, fog, and environmental coloring, plus precision-placement improvements. It also offers separate performance and quality graphics options: Paradox lists a 60-fps performance target and a 30-fps quality target. These are configuration targets supplied by the publisher, not a guarantee that every scene will maintain a fixed frame rate.

Use the included expansions and input options

Expanded Edition content includes 10 listed DLC expansions and content packs. The game also supports keyboard and mouse input alongside traditional controller configurations. Both features are packaged support; neither opens a route to Steam Workshop or third-party asset files.

Why do PC mods not carry over to the console?

PC mod support depends on services and folders that are not part of the documented Switch 2 workflow. Paradox’s support information for the original Cities: Skylines discusses Steam Workshop content and desktop Addons locations for Windows, macOS, and Linux. A Switch 2 owner does not have access to those operating-system folders or a documented Steam client integration.

PC custom assets are also more than saved-game data. A building, vehicle, prop, mesh, or texture may require the asset file itself, dependencies, and sometimes a code mod. A console save cannot resolve those dependencies simply because the save was copied from another platform. The Switch 2 product information does not describe a supported import mechanism for any of those file types.

This is why “the game runs on Switch 2” and “the game supports mods on Switch 2” are separate questions. The first is confirmed for the original edition; the second is not documented for the original game on this platform.

What is the difference between the original Switch Edition and Expanded Edition?

The original release is a backward-compatible Switch game. Expanded Edition is a separate, Switch 2-optimised release with a map editor, a larger buildable area, additional presentation controls, and more included content. Neither edition is documented here as providing the PC Steam Workshop workflow.

Edition External mod access Built-in map editing Included content Buildable area Controls and graphics
Nintendo Switch Edition Not documented for Steam Workshop, Paradox Mods, or imported assets Not listed in Nintendo’s compatibility description After Dark and Snowfall Original nine-tile limit Runs on Switch 2 with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch
Cities: Skylines – Expanded Edition Not documented for Steam Workshop, Paradox Mods for the original game, or imported assets Built-in map editor 10 listed DLC expansions and content packs 25 tiles Keyboard and mouse support; performance and quality options with publisher-stated 60-fps and 30-fps targets

Original Nintendo Switch Edition

Nintendo lists the original edition as supported on Switch 2. Its listing identifies the game and the included After Dark and Snowfall expansions, but does not describe a mod browser, asset importer, or PC-save dependency system. If you already own this version, Switch 2 compatibility lets you continue playing it; it does not turn the edition into a moddable PC build.

Cities: Skylines – Expanded Edition

Paradox announced Expanded Edition on October 7, 2026, for release on October 28, 2026. Its feature list focuses on native Switch 2 improvements rather than a port of the desktop mod architecture. The launch announcement gave a suggested retail price of $49, £41.49, or €49, with a 70% loyalty discount for existing Nintendo Switch owners from October 28, 2026 through April 28, 2027. Those are launch terms and can change by region, store, or date.

What does “custom assets” mean in this case?

The phrase covers two different activities, and only one is clearly available on Switch 2.

  • Built-in creation: use the Expanded Edition map editor and normal city-building tools to shape terrain, roads, districts, and services with objects supplied by the game.
  • Imported player assets: add a building, vehicle, prop, mesh, texture, map package, or code modification produced outside the game. Switch 2 materials do not document this capability.

Changing terrain in the editor therefore does not make the game “custom-asset compatible” in the PC sense. It is a supported creative mode contained within the console edition.

Can you install Steam Workshop mods on Nintendo Switch 2?

No supported installation path is documented. Steam Workshop subscriptions are tied to Steam accounts and the desktop version’s file and content system; the Switch 2 edition has no published instructions for signing into Workshop, downloading an item, or placing its files in a console directory.

  1. Do not assume a Workshop URL can be opened in the game’s console menus. No such browser or subscription workflow is listed.
  2. Do not copy a PC asset archive to an SD card or USB device expecting the game to scan it. An external-asset importer is not described for either Switch edition.
  3. Do not treat a map editor as a Workshop replacement. The editor creates maps inside Expanded Edition; it does not import a map authored on PC.
  4. If a future platform update adds mod support, use the instructions in that announcement rather than adapting desktop Addons-folder guides. Until then, regard external mods as unavailable.

Can you transfer a modded PC city to Switch 2?

You should not expect a modded PC save to work as a complete city on Switch 2. A save that references Workshop assets or code mods may contain dependencies the console edition cannot locate, and no official cross-platform dependency-resolution workflow is documented.

  • A PC save without mods may still differ in compatibility by edition and update; the cited Switch 2 materials do not promise universal save transfer.
  • A save that depends on custom buildings, vehicles, props, textures, or scripts should be treated as platform-bound.
  • Keep the original PC save untouched and make a separate backup before attempting any transfer experiment.
  • If your goal is to recreate the city, use the console’s native tools and included content rather than relying on the missing dependencies.

Does Cities: Skylines II prove that the original game supports mods on Switch 2?

No. Cities: Skylines II has separate Paradox Mods documentation describing a cross-platform mod service for that sequel, including documented map and code mods and later asset-mod support. Its architecture and platform promises cannot be used as evidence that the original Cities: Skylines on Switch 2 has the same service.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Search results often mix the two games because both use “Cities: Skylines” in their names. Check the exact game title and platform before following a mod guide: a Cities: Skylines II Paradox Mods page may be accurate for the sequel while being irrelevant to the original Switch 2 release.

Which Switch version should a creator choose?

Choose based on the type of creation you want, not on an expectation of PC mods.

  • Choose the original edition if you already own it and mainly want the existing Switch experience on Switch 2. Its confirmed benefit is compatibility, not new mod functionality.
  • Choose Expanded Edition if you want the built-in map editor, 25-tile scale, environmental controls, precision-placement improvements, keyboard-and-mouse support, graphics options, and the 10 included DLC expansions and content packs.
  • Choose a PC version instead if access to Steam Workshop subscriptions, desktop asset folders, or imported code and models is the deciding requirement. Those workflows are outside the documented Switch 2 feature set.

The Expanded Edition’s launch pricing was $49 / £41.49 / €49, with a stated 70% loyalty discount for existing Nintendo Switch owners through April 28, 2027. Verify the price and eligibility in your regional Nintendo store before purchasing, since launch promotions are time-limited.

What should you do if a guide tells you to enable mods?

First identify the game and platform named in the guide. Instructions mentioning Steam, a Windows/macOS/Linux Addons folder, or Cities: Skylines II’s Paradox Mods service are not instructions for the original Cities: Skylines on Switch 2.

For the console edition, stay within the menus and content supplied by the game. Use Expanded Edition’s map editor for custom landscapes, select its graphics and control options to suit your setup, and use the included expansions for additional systems and assets. If Paradox later documents a Switch-specific mod service, that announcement should define supported file types, account requirements, and edition compatibility; no such details are currently listed.

What is the bottom line for Switch 2 players?

Switch 2 gives Cities: Skylines players native compatibility and, in Expanded Edition, substantially more built-in creation space. It does not currently provide documented access to Steam Workshop, original-game Paradox Mods, imported custom buildings or vehicles, or PC mod dependencies. Think of Expanded Edition as a larger, better-equipped console sandbox—not as the PC mod ecosystem running on Nintendo hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a future Switch 2 update automatically make PC mods work?

There is no published promise that a system or game update will add PC-style mod support. A real change would need platform-specific documentation explaining distribution, file handling, moderation, and edition compatibility; until that appears, treat the current feature list as the limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I make a custom map in Expanded Edition and share its file with a PC player?

The built-in editor lets you create maps inside the Switch 2 game, but the available product descriptions do not specify an export format or cross-platform sharing channel. Creation on the console should not be assumed to produce a portable PC map file.

Do the 10 included DLC packs mean every PC expansion is included?

No such blanket claim is established. The launch materials describe 10 included expansions and content packs, while the original Switch listing specifically names After Dark and Snowfall; check the edition’s regional content list for the exact included items.

Is keyboard-and-mouse support available in the original Switch Edition?

Keyboard-and-mouse support is listed as an Expanded Edition feature. Nintendo’s compatibility listing for the original edition confirms play on Switch 2 but does not state that the original release gains the newer input options.
