Sword of Faith is a Sanctic Psyker power in Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. It replaces the psyker’s weapon with a sword of sheer will for the rest of combat, and its listed attacks range from a 1 AP strike to a 3 AP cone of flame. The wiki lists a 175-momentum requirement and a 50-momentum activation cost.
What Sword of Faith does
When activated, Sword of Faith replaces the psyker’s current weapon until combat ends. It is an ability that creates a temporary weapon, not a separately acquired sword. Its attack options include a single-target strike, an area attack, a line of flame, and a cone of flame. The attack descriptions say it does not affect targets without souls.
The Rogue Trader Wiki ability entry describes the power as dealing the same damage as Purge Soul with the same bonuses. Its weapon entry lists 1–4 direct damage and additional conditional modifiers, including effects against certain enemy categories and after an enemy has damaged the psyker or an ally during combat. It also lists additional damage based on psy rating. Because the pages do not identify a game patch, check the current in-game ability text before relying on these detailed damage interactions for a build.
How to unlock Sword of Faith
The ability entry lists these prerequisites:
- Sanctic Powers
- Psyker Terminus
- Either Hammer of the Emperor or Light of the Emperor
These are the wiki’s listed requirements; availability or wording may differ by game version.

Momentum cost and attack options
The wiki lists a minimum of 175 momentum to activate Sword of Faith, with an activation cost of 50 momentum. Once transformed, the weapon’s listed attacks have different action-point costs:
| Attack | Listed AP cost |
|---|---|
| Single-target strike | 1 AP |
| Area attack | 2 AP |
| Line of flame | 2 AP |
| Cone of flame | 3 AP |
Choose an attack based on the targets’ positions and the AP available for the turn. The entries provide attack costs and shapes, but do not establish a universally best option or a tested build comparison.
Does Sword of Faith count as a force weapon?
Yes. The ability entry says Sword of Faith counts as a force weapon for relevant talents and bonuses. It also says that if the psyker was holding a force weapon when activating the power, that weapon’s bonuses remain. This lets force-weapon synergies matter even though the visible weapon changes to the sword of will.
How Sword of Faith damage scales
The wiki ties its damage to Purge Soul and says the same bonuses apply. It also describes a repeat-use effect that raises damage by the psyker’s resolve; the weapon entry separately lists additional psy rating damage and conditional modifiers. These details are version-sensitive, and the pages do not specify which game patch their values describe. Treat them as wiki-listed mechanics rather than guaranteed values for every current build.

What to weigh before using it
- Momentum: Activation spends 50 momentum after reaching the listed 175 threshold.
- AP and attack shape: Compare the listed action-point cost with whether a strike, area, line, or cone best fits the targets in range.
- Build bonuses: Resolve, psy rating, and force-weapon-related talents or carried-weapon bonuses may affect damage, according to the wiki entries.
- Target eligibility: The attack descriptions exclude targets without souls.
The mechanics above come from community wiki entries, not official developer documentation. Since those pages do not identify a patch version, confirm the live ability and weapon descriptions in your game before planning around exact costs or damage.
