There is no single best shield fuse in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: the right attachment depends on whether you need a launch, a smoother route, extra defense utility, or a way to disrupt enemies. The 15 combinations below are ranked by usefulness across those jobs, not by Nintendo; its guidance encourages experimentation rather than publishing a top-15 list. [Nintendo’s shield-surfing guide]
How shield fusions work—and what to watch
Fuse can attach objects to an equipped shield, adding an effect or changing how the equipment behaves. Nintendo recommends experimenting with materials and devices, but the attachment is not always reusable: some devices are consumed when triggered, and removing a fused material through the pouch destroys that material. [Nintendo’s abilities overview] [Nintendo’s game guidance]
- Think about the job: launch options trade a shield attachment for height; traversal options change how surfing feels on particular routes; combat options activate under specific conditions.
- Consider shield durability: an explosive attachment can put a weak shield at risk, and ordinary shield surfing still wears the shield.
- Expect a material cost: disposable devices are spent when used, while removal through the pouch loses the attached material.
For shield surfing, ready the shield with ZL, jump with X, then press A in mid-air. [Nintendo’s controls and tips]
Best shield fusions for launching and getting airborne
1. Rocket shield — quick vertical launch
Fuse a rocket for a rapid upward launch when you need height without building a larger setup. The rocket is consumed after launching, so save this for a moment when the elevation is worth the one-use attachment.

2. Spring shield — a spring-assisted jump
A spring gives you a launch option for a quick upward or forward jump. It is a useful alternative to a rocket when a spring’s bounce suits the route; the device is consumed when used.
3. Time Bomb shield — delayed explosive launch
A Time Bomb provides a launch after a delay, so it can help when you have room to set up and want to time your movement. Allow space for the blast and avoid treating it like an instant, compact launch.
4. Bomb Flower or Bomb Barrel shield — dramatic blast, high risk
These explosive attachments can produce a forceful launch, but the shield itself is part of the risk. Nintendo warns: “While your shield will protect you from the blast, it’s also a fast way to destroy a low-level shield.” Use a shield you can afford to lose rather than risking a valuable one. 5. Wing shield — a higher shield-surf jump
A wing is a technique-oriented choice for players who want a higher initial jump while shield surfing and an easier route into bullet time. Choose it for that aerial setup, not as a general-purpose defensive upgrade.

- Ultrahand: Using the new Ultrahand ability, Link can pick up, move, and rotate almost any object, and can even attach objects together to create bridges, vehicles, and more!
- Fuse: Magically fuse almost any object to Link’s current weapon, shield, or arrow to increase durability, damage, or even add a new effect. Experiment with lots of different combinations to come up with surprising—and sometimes hilarious—results!
- Ascend: Add a new dimension to your exploration with Ascend, which gives Link the ability to pass through solid objects above him. Rise up through ceilings, hillsides, and even certain enemies to create seemingly impossible shortcuts.
- Recall: Use Recall to make objects in motion move backward through time, letting Link ride fallen boulders skyward, recover thrown weapons, or send projectiles back where they came from.
Best shield fusions for surfing and ground traversal
6. Cart shield — wheeled travel on flatter ground
A cart gives shield surfing a wheeled feel that suits flatter terrain. It is a route-specific traversal choice rather than a way to avoid shield wear: surfing still wears the shield.
7. Mine Cart shield — for rail routes
A Mine Cart is the more specialized pick when the route involves minecart rails. Its value depends on being in the right setting; it is not a broadly useful upgrade for ordinary ground travel.
8. Sled shield — smooth travel on suitable terrain
A sled makes a good surf attachment when the surface and route suit it. Compare it by terrain and handling needs rather than assuming it is the fastest option everywhere.
9. Frozen-meat shield — lower-friction land travel
Frozen meat offers a situational lower-friction option for moving over land. It is worth considering when that sliding behavior fits the route, not as a universal replacement for other surf attachments.

10. Fan shield — powered surfing experiment
A fan can be used for a powered shield-surfing experiment, but its behavior depends on the device setup. Treat it as a situational traversal idea, not as a passive defensive effect that is always active.
Best shield fusions for combat and defense utility
11. Frost Emitter shield — nearby freezing and interruption
A Frost Emitter can freeze or interrupt nearby threats, making it useful for controlling a fight when enemies are susceptible. The device can consume resources while active, so the effect has an operating cost.
12. Flame Emitter shield — proximity pressure against susceptible foes
A Flame Emitter can apply a contact or proximity effect and is useful against enemies vulnerable to it. It is a matchup-dependent combat tool, not a reliable answer to every enemy.
13. Shock Emitter shield — electric control in the right encounter
A Shock Emitter offers an electric control effect that can help against groups or susceptible targets. Its usefulness depends on the situation and device use, so choose it for a fight where that control matters.

14. Sapphire shield — reactive elemental crowd control
Elemental gems can create retaliatory effects, making a Sapphire shield a reactive option when enemies press close. It can add crowd-control utility, but the exact result depends on the encounter; do not expect the same payoff against every foe.
15. Puffshroom shield — automatic smoke for an escape opening
A Puffshroom can create smoke after a triggering hit, giving you a chance to disengage or set up Sneakstrikes. It is less controlled than using the material directly with arrows or reusing it with a Forest Dweller weapon, but its defensive trigger can be useful when you want the shield to create an opening for you.

A Muddle Bud shield is another reactive option: when its close-range trigger occurs, it can disrupt a group by turning enemies against one another. That can be valuable in an emergency, but it is less controlled than choosing when and where to use the material directly. If group disruption is the specific job you need, consider it instead of one of the combat picks above; it is not a separate all-purpose winner.
How to choose the right combination
- Need height now? Choose a Rocket or Spring for a straightforward one-use launch, or a Time Bomb if you can accommodate its delay.
- Want a surf setup? Match Cart, Mine Cart, Sled, or frozen meat to the terrain and route; expect shield wear while surfing.
- Trying to control a fight? Use an emitter or Sapphire when its effect suits the enemy, or choose Puffshroom for a reactive smoke opening.
- Protecting a valuable shield? Avoid explosive experiments on a low-level shield, and remember that removing a fused item consumes the material.
Nintendo’s guidance is to experiment with Fuse, not to follow an official ranking. The Hylian Shield’s defense is exceptional, but as Console Pulse senior editor Aiden Nguyen puts it, “The Hylian Shield wins defense so completely that the interesting decisions happen everywhere else.” That makes the useful question less “Which fuse is best?” and more “What do I need this shield to do?”
