There is no official Nintendo ranking of the hardest enemies in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This is an editorial ranking based on how much damage mistakes can cost, how difficult attacks are to read and dodge, how much preparation or specialized counterplay helps, pressure from terrain or multiple enemies, and how strongly the fight changes with your equipment and progress.

The order is necessarily subjective: an enemy that is manageable with upgraded armor and strong fused weapons may be dangerous early on, while familiar attack patterns can make a punishing fight feel routine. Enemy color and horn shape also signal strength within a type; Nintendo says many enemies progress from red to blue, black, and white as they get stronger. Nintendo’s beginner guide recommends preparing with Fuse, armor upgrades, healing, and tactical materials.

How this ranking works

This list ranks 15 enemy types and encounters by the danger they tend to pose, not by a fixed stat or a universal difficulty setting. The ranking reflects a typical fight when Link is reasonably equipped for the region, while recognizing that progression changes the challenge: stronger weapons, armor, health, and experience can sharply reduce the threat. Group fights, awkward terrain, and the need to exploit a specific opening count too. The ranking is an editorial judgment, not a Nintendo-published difficulty order.

For general preparation, Nintendo advises strengthening weapons with Fuse and upgrading armor to reduce damage. Bomb Flowers, Puffshrooms, Muddle Buds, and Dazzlefruit can also change the terms of a fight rather than simply adding damage. Nintendo’s guide recommends using such tools tactically and avoiding fights when under-equipped.

The 15 hardest enemies in Tears of the Kingdom

  1. Gleeoks

Gleeoks combine three attacking heads, elemental hazards, and a second phase that makes positioning and preparation matter. Flame, Frost, and Thunder Gleeoks each demand the right elemental protection and healing supplies; King Gleeoks add multiple elements to the problem. The basic tactic is to hit all three eyes with arrows to bring the creature down, then close in for melee damage before it recovers. Missing the opening or misjudging an elemental attack can make the fight costly. Nintendo Life’s Gleeok guide covers the forms and encounter approach.

  2. Lynels

Lynels are dangerous because their attacks punish impatience and their close-range patterns take practice to read. Keep enough distance to observe their movements, dodge at the right moment, and use Flurry Attack openings rather than trying to trade hits. Do not rush in just because a Lynel is nearly defeated. A 2023 Prima Games guide reports 2,000 hit points for a standard Lynel; that is the guide’s figure, not a Nintendo-published statistic.

  3. Gloom Hands

Five fast hands pursue Link, turning a fight into a scramble to manage several threats at once. The encounter can appear wherever gloom is found, so the approach and escape routes may vary. The guide recommends defeating all five to clear the encounter, and retreat is a valid choice if Link is not ready. The hands may transform after defeat, so do not assume the first phase is the end. Nintendo Life’s enemy guide describes the encounter.

  4. King Gleeoks

King Gleeoks merit a separate place from the other Gleeoks because they bring multiple elemental threats together. You need to stay attentive to which hazard is coming while still creating openings against three heads. Arrows aimed at each eye are central to knocking the beast down; elemental preparation and healing make the long fight more forgiving. The difficulty depends heavily on whether Link has the equipment and supplies to withstand its elements. Nintendo Life’s Gleeok guide includes King Gleeoks.

    Rank #2
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
    • Ultrahand: Using the new Ultrahand ability, Link can pick up, move, and rotate almost any object, and can even attach objects together to create bridges, vehicles, and more!
    • Fuse: Magically fuse almost any object to Link’s current weapon, shield, or arrow to increase durability, damage, or even add a new effect. Experiment with lots of different combinations to come up with surprising—and sometimes hilarious—results!
    • Ascend: Add a new dimension to your exploration with Ascend, which gives Link the ability to pass through solid objects above him. Rise up through ceilings, hillsides, and even certain enemies to create seemingly impossible shortcuts.
    • Recall: Use Recall to make objects in motion move backward through time, letting Link ride fallen boulders skyward, recover thrown weapons, or send projectiles back where they came from.
  5. Flux Constructs

Flux Constructs shift between forms and can attack from awkward angles, but their glowing cube weak point gives you a clear way to interrupt the fight. Use Ultrahand to pull the cube out; the construct collapses temporarily, creating a damage window. There are three types, each stronger than the previous one. Reaching elevated targets can be a challenge, and a spring or another Zonai device can help. Nintendo Life’s guide explains the weak-point tactic.

  6. Frox

Frox fights are complicated by their Depths setting and the creature’s size. Shoot its eye to stun it, then attack the mineral deposits on its body. When it tries to inhale Link, throwing a Bomb Flower into its mouth can interrupt the attack and create another opening. The fight becomes much harder if you miss the eye or let the Frox control the pace. Nintendo Life’s guide outlines this counterplay.

  7. Molduga

Molduga uses the sand itself to threaten Link, so staying on solid high ground is part of the fight. Use a bomb or an arrow to lure it out of the sand, then attack while it is stunned. The method is straightforward once understood, but being caught in the open or failing to create a safe opening can quickly turn the encounter against you. Nintendo Life’s enemy guide describes the lure-and-stun approach.

  8. Battle Talus

A Battle Talus adds a Bokoblin stronghold to the usual Talus threat. The extra enemies create pressure while the Talus itself remains dangerous, so Link must decide whether to handle the archers first or climb up and attack the mineral deposit. Terrain and the group’s positioning make this more demanding than a basic Talus encounter. Nintendo Life’s guide covers the encounter.

  9. Hinox

A Hinox is large and can punish Link if allowed to control the distance. Shoot it in the eye to stun it, then move in to attack. Depths Hinoxes add gloom damage to the threat, making positioning and preparation more important. The eye is a clear weakness, but the window to use it safely is what makes the encounter demanding. Nintendo Life’s guide notes the Depths variant’s gloom danger.

  10. Stone Talus

Talus fights ask you to identify and reach a mineral deposit while avoiding heavy attacks. Their size makes the danger easy to see, but getting a safe route to the weak point can be awkward, particularly when the terrain limits movement. The Battle Talus ranks higher because of its added Bokoblin pressure; a standard Talus is still a substantial fight if Link lacks the damage or mobility to exploit its opening quickly. See Nintendo Life’s enemy guide for Talus encounter advice.

  11. Captain Constructs

Captain Constructs hit harder than the most basic Constructs and appear in encounters where Link’s equipment and combat familiarity may still be limited. Their strength also scales through stronger types, making the color and horn cues useful warnings rather than decoration. Fuse can help Link keep pace with the increasing durability and damage. Nintendo explains enemy strength cues and recommends weapon preparation in its beginner guide.

  12. Boss Bokoblins

Boss Bokoblins are most threatening with a group behind them. Their allies can crowd Link, complicate target selection, and punish tunnel vision. Use tactical materials to disrupt or redirect the group, and take advantage of openings rather than getting surrounded. Their danger varies considerably with the size of the group and the terrain, which makes them less consistently punishing than the top-ranked minibosses.

  13. Horriblins

Horriblins can make enclosed spaces uncomfortable by attacking from ceilings and forcing Link to adapt his aim and movement. Their unusual positioning is the main challenge: a strong weapon is less useful if Link cannot safely reach or target them. Watch where they cling, create an opening, and avoid letting several attack from different angles at once.

  14. Lizalfos

Lizalfos are quick, mobile opponents that can make attacks difficult to land and punish careless timing. Their strength varies by color, and stronger variants can be more dangerous as the game progresses. Keep your guard and movement responsive instead of assuming a hit will connect; use Fuse and tactical materials to overcome a mismatch in equipment. Nintendo notes that color and horn shape communicate strength among enemy types in its beginner guide.

  15. Wizzrobes

Wizzrobes create pressure from a distance and can make elemental preparation matter more than raw weapon damage. Their attacks are easier to manage when Link recognizes the element and has room to move, but they can be disruptive when encountered alongside other enemies or in cramped terrain. Their place here reflects that situational pressure: they can be a nuisance or a serious threat depending on the encounter.

What changes the difficulty most?

  • Progression: Stronger fused weapons shorten fights, while armor upgrades reduce how punishing a mistake is. Enemy color and horn shape can warn that a stronger variant is present.
  • Preparation: Healing food and protection suited to the enemy’s elements can prevent a difficult fight from becoming a survival test. Fuse improves weapon strength; Nintendo also recommends tactical use of Bomb Flowers, Puffshrooms, Muddle Buds, and Dazzlefruit.
  • Encounter context: A Battle Talus or a Boss Bokoblin group can be harder because of extra enemies, while a Gleeok becomes more manageable when Link has space, suitable gear, and enough arrows.
  • Player familiarity: Learning a dodge window or a weak point often matters more than adding another weapon upgrade. Lynels reward observation and Flurry Attacks; Flux Constructs reward locating and extracting the cube.

When to avoid a fight

Not every enemy needs to be defeated immediately. If armor, healing, or weapons are inadequate, leaving the area and returning later is a sensible way to manage risk. This is especially true when a fight combines a dangerous enemy with terrain or multiple attackers. Nintendo’s advice is to prepare first and use tactical items—or avoid an unfavorable fight—rather than treating every encounter as mandatory.
