Techtonica is a virtual, part-time software engineering program for eligible women and non-binary adults in the United States. Its current program has two stages: a free Web Dev Foundations course, followed by a tuition-based Software Applications program for selected participants. Completing the program does not guarantee a job placement.

What is Techtonica?

Techtonica is a fiscally sponsored nonprofit project that offers software engineering training and career support with an economic-empowerment focus. Its current program is remote and part-time. Part I introduces full-stack web development through group learning; Part II offers more advanced, personalized, project-based software application learning with mentoring. The curriculum is mostly full-stack JavaScript and also touches project management, UI/UX design, and data analysis, according to Techtonica’s FAQ.

The program uses active learning: participants work through schedules and assignments with support from mentors, volunteers, and peers rather than relying on an instructor to direct every step. Techtonica has described its training as remote since March 2020; that does not mean a later job placement must also be remote.

How the two program stages work

Stage What it involves Cost and selection
Part I: Web Dev Foundations Full-stack web development basics, learned through group work. The current cohort is scheduled for September–December 2026, including pre-work. Techtonica lists capacity of up to 30 participants. Free. Techtonica says Part I does not include stipends or placements.
Part II: Software Applications More advanced, personalized, project-based learning with mentoring. The current program page plans this stage for January–July 2027. Techtonica selects 10–15 successful Part I completers. Tuition and need-based assistance apply.

Dates, cohort capacity, and selection details are from Techtonica’s Part-Time Software Engineering Program page and describe the cohort currently listed there; check that page for changes before applying.

Schedule and workload

The program page lists a Monday–Friday schedule from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Pacific, or 20 hours per week, with some weekend hackathons. “Part-time” therefore means a recurring weekday commitment, not a flexible course that can necessarily be completed at any time. Applicants should account for the listed hours, pre-work, and possible weekend events.

How much does Techtonica cost?

Part I is listed as free. Part II’s listed full tuition is $14,000 paid upfront or $15,000 in six monthly payments. Techtonica also describes need-based sliding-scale tuition, tuition scholarships, and stipend scholarships. Eligibility for aid depends on financial need; the page does not guarantee that any particular applicant will receive a specific award.

Techtonica reports that 93% of participants since it adopted tuition were eligible for need-based, sliding-scale tuition and stipend scholarships. This is an organization-reported figure, not an independently verified outcome. Its program page also says income increase is “usually 3-5x,” but the material available does not specify the measurement method. Treat that statement as Techtonica’s reported claim, not a promised result.

Who can apply?

Techtonica’s current eligibility rules are specific and may change. The program page lists requirements and conditions that include:

  • Being an adult woman, cisgender or transgender, or a non-binary person.
  • Having digital literacy, including familiarity with a computer, internet, mouse or trackpad, browser, and email, plus meeting the page’s stated typing threshold.
  • Having a high school diploma or GED and completing four prerequisite workshops.
  • Being able to commit to the program schedule and having stable housing.
  • Living in the United States, having a U.S. bank account, and being legally employable in the United States. Techtonica says it cannot help with visas.
  • Meeting additional prior-education and work-history restrictions listed on the program page.
  • Being willing to work at an assigned partner company if matched, and to participate in media and pitch activities.

A potential placement may require relocation within California. Remote training should not be taken as assurance that a placement will be in the participant’s current location or remote. Review the live eligibility criteria before applying, especially if relocation, work authorization, or prior education may affect your fit.

Does Techtonica provide a laptop?

Techtonica’s FAQ says it provides MacBooks to participants who need them. Applicants should check with Techtonica about current equipment arrangements rather than assuming they need to buy a computer before the program.

Does Techtonica guarantee a job?

No. Techtonica says some successful Part II graduates may be placed in paid technical roles with partner companies, while others may receive job-search support. Placements are limited and not guaranteed. The FAQ describes partner-company expectations such as supporting junior talent, providing regular manager check-ins and mentoring, and participating in cohort activities.

Techtonica’s sponsor page reports that, even with hiring freezes in 2021 and 2022, 87% of its graduates stayed with placement companies beyond the initial six months. That is a historical figure reported by Techtonica; it does not establish an outcome for the current cohort. The page also describes sponsor and hiring-partner involvement, but the available material does not establish an independent evaluation of program outcomes.
