If your Team Fortress 2 server is missing from the server browser, first verify that it is running in Internet mode with sv_lan 0. Then test from the same router with the host’s private IP, clear every browser filter, and check the host firewall and UDP port forwarding. A direct-IP test tells you whether the game server is unreachable or merely absent from Steam’s public list.

Start with a three-minute diagnosis
Do these checks in order. They separate a configuration problem from a discovery problem before you change router settings.

sv_lan 0. This makes the server an Internet server.sv_lan 1restricts it to LAN clients. - From a player on the same router, connect to the host’s internal IP address, not the public address. Include the server port if it is not the default, for example
connect 192.168.1.25:27015. - From outside the home network, try a direct connection to the public address and forwarded port.
- Reset the in-game browser filters for map, region, latency, player count, password status, and “not full.”
If a direct connection works but the listing is absent, the TF2 process is reachable and the remaining fault is registration, filtering, or Steam master-server communication. If direct connection fails, stay focused on server mode, the listening port, firewall rules, NAT, and forwarding.
1. Confirm that TF2 is running in Internet mode
Steam Support’s guidance is explicit: “In order for Internet players to connect to your Server, you must enable your Server to be an Internet Server.” Enter sv_lan 0 in the server console, or place it in the configuration file that your server loads.

For a listen server
A listen server runs from the player’s TF2 client. Put the setting in listenserver.cfg, or execute it after the map has loaded:
sv_lan 0Restart the map or server after changing the file so the setting is applied. If you intend to run only a private LAN game, use sv_lan 1 instead; Internet players will not be able to join that instance.
For a dedicated server
A dedicated server runs separately from the player client and normally reads server.cfg. Add:
sv_lan 0Check the console after startup and after each map change. Configuration files can be overwritten by a launch script or another config, so verify the live value rather than assuming the file was loaded.
How to recognize a mode mismatch
- Players on the same home network can see or join the game, but friends on the Internet cannot.
- The server appears only when LAN-oriented filters are used.
- A restart changes the behavior because the setting was entered in the console but not saved to the configuration file.
Correcting sv_lan does not open a router port by itself. It only allows the server to operate as an Internet server; firewall and NAT rules still determine whether outside traffic can reach it.
2. Joining from the same Wi-Fi requires the private IP
A client and server behind the same router should use the server’s internal address. Steam’s router guidance notes that a client behind the same router cannot connect through the server browser using the server’s external address. Many routers do not support, or do not correctly handle, this “hairpin” path.

Find the host’s internal address
On the computer running TF2, identify the IPv4 address assigned by the router. On Windows, ipconfig displays it under the active adapter. On Linux, ip addr shows the address on the active interface. Use the address in the private ranges commonly assigned by home routers, such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x.

Connect directly
Open the TF2 developer console on the joining client and enter:
connect INTERNAL_IP:27015Replace INTERNAL_IP with the host’s actual address. If the server uses another listening port, substitute that port. This test does not depend on public browser registration, so it is the correct first check for two machines on one home network.
Prevent the address from changing
DHCP can assign a different private address after a reboot. Create a DHCP reservation in the router for the server computer, or assign a carefully chosen static address that matches the router’s subnet. Update any firewall or forwarding rule if the host address has already changed.

A server can be registered and reachable while hidden by the browser’s current search settings. Reset the following filters to their broadest values:
- Map: choose all maps rather than the map currently running.
- Region: allow all regions if players are connecting from different locations.
- Latency: remove a strict ping ceiling.
- Player count: clear minimum and maximum limits that exclude the current population.
- Password: include password-protected servers when appropriate.
- Not full: disable this filter while testing an occupied server.
After changing filters, refresh the list rather than relying on a previously cached result. Test from a second Steam account or another computer when possible; that distinguishes a local browser setting from a server-wide listing problem.
4. Check Steam browser access and the host firewall
Steam’s browser troubleshooting identifies several causes of incomplete or stalled results: a firewall or master-server block, incorrect Steam rates, packet loss, and router firmware behavior. Facepunch’s Source-engine troubleshooting also recommends checking whether the Steam Server Browser works independently and whether another Source game can retrieve servers.
Separate a TF2 problem from a browser problem
- Open the Steam Server Browser outside TF2 and see whether ordinary servers populate.
- Try another Source-engine game on the same computer, if one is available, to see whether its browser retrieves results.
- Temporarily remove overly narrow filters and refresh.
- Check whether the problem affects every network on the computer or only one home connection.
If no games populate, investigate Steam connectivity, packet loss, local firewall policy, and the router before editing TF2 configuration. If other games list normally but your server does not, return to the server’s mode, port, and registration checks.

Permit the actual host process
On the computer running the server, allow the TF2 or dedicated-server executable through the operating system firewall for the network profiles you use. A rule on another PC does nothing. If the firewall asks for a port, allow the server’s UDP listening port and keep the rule limited to the intended executable or local network where practical.
Security software can create a second, separate block. Check its event log for dropped UDP packets, then retest after creating a narrowly scoped allow rule. Do not leave the firewall disabled as a permanent fix.
Account for packet loss and router firmware
Packet loss can make browser results incomplete even when a server eventually appears. Test the connection at a time when the network is quiet, and reboot or update router firmware if its behavior changed after an upgrade. A browser stall combined with normal direct-IP access points toward discovery traffic rather than the TF2 process itself.
5. Forward the correct UDP port
Steam documents UDP local port 27015 as the default gameplay port for dedicated and listen servers. Without forwarding, a Source server may be absent from the browser for clients outside the home network.
What the forwarding rule must contain
- Protocol: UDP.
- External port: the public port friends will use.
- Internal port: the port on which TF2 is listening.
- Destination address: the server computer’s private IP.
For a default setup, forward UDP 27015 to UDP 27015 on the host’s private address. Apply the rule to the actual router that owns the public connection. If you have a second router, mesh gateway, or modem-router combination, you may need forwarding on both devices or a bridge/DMZ design that you understand and can secure.
When 27015 is already occupied
Steam’s Source-server guide recommends trying nearby ports 27016–27019 or the range 27021–27032 when the default is unavailable. Choose one port, configure TF2 to use it, forward that same UDP port, and include it in direct-connect tests. Do not forward a range unless you have a specific reason; one explicit rule is easier to audit.
Keep the destination stable
Forwarding follows an IP address, not a computer name. If the router later gives the host a new address, the rule points at the wrong device and the server disappears for Internet players. Reserve the address with DHCP or use a static configuration compatible with the router’s subnet.

Remember the host firewall
Port forwarding only moves traffic to the host. The operating-system firewall must also allow the same UDP port, and the server must actually be listening on it. A forwarded port with no process behind it will fail every direct-IP test.
6. Use direct-IP tests to isolate discovery
Run tests from two different network positions because each one answers a different question.

Interpret the combinations rather than treating “not listed” as one fault:
- Local direct connection works; outside direct connection fails: check
sv_lan 0, the public-facing firewall rule, NAT/port forwarding, a changed private IP, and carrier-grade NAT. - Outside direct connection works; browser listing fails: inspect filters, Steam browser access, master-server communication, packet loss, and router firmware.
- Both direct tests fail: verify the live listening port, server startup, firewall rules, and whether the server is still running.
- Local direct connection fails but the host appears to work locally: confirm the exact private IP, port, and whether the host firewall allows traffic from the local network.
Do not use a second device on the same Wi-Fi to validate the public address. That test can fail because of router hairpin behavior even when Internet players can connect normally.
7. Listen server or dedicated server?
The right architecture affects visibility, uptime, and how many router constraints you must solve. Steamworks describes the unified Steam server browser and identifies dedicated servers as the best choice for persistent games such as Team Fortress 2.

8. A complete repair sequence
Use this checklist when you want one repeatable procedure rather than isolated guesses.
- Stop the server and record the intended listening port.
- Set
sv_lan 0in the activeserver.cfgorlistenserver.cfg. - Start the server, load a map, and confirm the live configuration in the console.
- Find the host’s current private IP and reserve it in the router.
- Allow the server executable and UDP listening port through the host firewall.
- Forward UDP 27015, or the selected alternative port, to that private IP.
- From the same router, use
connect INTERNAL_IP:PORT. - From an outside network, use the public address and port.
- Reset every browser filter and refresh the Steam list.
- If direct access works but listing still fails, test Steam browser access, another Source game, packet loss, firewall/master-server blocks, and router firmware.
Change one layer at a time and retest. Altering the server port, firewall, router, and browser filters simultaneously makes it impossible to tell which change fixed the problem.

9. Common symptoms and the right next action
“My friends cannot see it, but I can play locally”
Check sv_lan 0 first, then test the public address from an outside network. If the outside test fails, inspect UDP forwarding, the host firewall, and carrier-grade NAT. A local success alone does not prove Internet reachability.

“The server appears only after I remove filters”
Keep the broader filters or add constraints one at a time to identify which setting excludes it. Map, region, latency, player count, password, and “not full” each can hide a valid result.
“Direct IP works, but the browser never lists it”
The server process and network path are functioning. Focus on Steam browser access, master-server communication, packet loss, router firmware, and stale or narrow browser filters instead of repeatedly changing the TF2 port.
“The forwarding rule worked yesterday”
Compare the router’s destination address with the host’s current private IP. DHCP changes are a frequent cause of a previously correct rule becoming ineffective. Also confirm that the server still uses the same port after a restart.
“The same public address fails from my own Wi-Fi”
That is consistent with a router that does not support NAT loopback. Use the host’s private IP for same-router players and reserve the public-address test for a genuinely external connection.

Check the Steam Server Browser independently, test another Source game, and investigate local firewall blocks, incorrect Steam rates, packet loss, and router firmware. This symptom is broader than one TF2 server configuration.
10. When home hosting is the wrong tool
Home hosting is reasonable when you control the router, receive a public address, can keep the host online, and want full administrative control. It becomes a poor fit when the connection uses carrier-grade NAT, the router cannot forward ports, firewall policy is locked down, or the community expects a server to stay online while your gaming PC is off.
A managed TF2 host can remove those particular network and uptime constraints. Choose that route only after deciding that persistent availability is worth giving up some infrastructure control, and verify the provider’s current capabilities, access method, and terms before moving a community.
