Wizards of the Coast has described Waystone’s Guidance as perhaps the strongest and most polarizing card in Alchemy, while its February 2026 analysis gave the Kona archetype the highest win rate among the ten most popular Best-of-One Alchemy decks. This ranking weighs those official statements, deck centrality, balance changes and late-2026 relevance—not a single claimed Wizards top-ten list.
There is an important deadline: Wizards plans to retire Alchemy on February 2, 2027, with Alchemy: Reality Fracture intended to be the final release. The cards will remain usable in Historic, Timeless, Brawl and Competitive Brawl, so a wildcard can still have value after the dedicated format disappears.

Which Alchemy cards are best to craft?
1. Waystone’s Guidance
Waystone’s Guidance has the clearest direct endorsement in the available official record. Wizards called it “perhaps the strongest and most polarizing card in Alchemy” and said it appeared in almost every aggressive white deck. Its Mobilize pressure can turn an early board into a growing threat, so the card is useful as both an initial play and an escalation tool. Craft it first if you regularly play aggressive white decks and want one card with reach across more than a single list.
2. Kona, Rescue Beastie
Kona is the payoff around which the Planet/Omniscience combo is built. Brood Astronomer and Formidable Speaker provide consistency, while Wizards’ February 2026 analysis reported that the Kona archetype had “by far the highest win rate” among its ten most popular Best-of-One Alchemy archetypes. The caveat is commitment: Kona is an excellent reason to build that shell, but a poor blind craft if you do not enjoy combo play.
3. Summitfest Closing Ceremony
Summitfest Closing Ceremony is the leading blue-red anchor in the late-2026 evidence. Wizards’ October 2026 banned-and-restricted announcement specifically cited blue-red decks built around it as still strong and popular. Its value is therefore greatest when you already own, or intend to complete, the Izzet shell rather than when you need a generally playable card for any collection.

4. Tablet of Discovery
Tablet of Discovery shares that blue-red recommendation. Wizards named it alongside Summitfest Closing Ceremony when describing the popular, powerful Izzet strategy, making it a central support card rather than an interchangeable cantrip. Crafting Tablet makes most sense after deciding that this particular Izzet plan will be your main Alchemy deck.
5. Golden Sidekick
Golden Sidekick is the defining investment for White-Black Bats. Wizards reported that Bats was the most popular deck across ladder levels after Golden Sidekick arrived, which is unusually strong popularity evidence for a single card’s place in an archetype. Its opportunity cost is lower for players who already have the Bats shell and much higher for anyone collecting cards without a tribal or life-focused plan.
6. Sanguine Soothsayer
Sanguine Soothsayer belongs beside Golden Sidekick, not as a generic black or white staple. Wizards buffed it to add resilience to Bats and described the deck as distinctive and life-gain oriented, while also noting that it was not among Alchemy’s strongest archetypes. That makes Soothsayer a synergy craft: worthwhile for Bats specialists, but not the first wildcard purchase for a broad collection.

7. Mardu Thunderkite
Mardu Thunderkite earns its position through pressure and a specific explosive interaction. Wizards described it as strong on its own and especially brutal when cast through Three Tree Battalion. Players who can reliably support that Mardu pattern get a threat with a clear payoff; players who cannot should treat it as a lower-priority craft despite the card’s individual strength.
8. Charged Conjuration
Charged Conjuration rose in the February 2026 rebalance, which made it cheaper for Storm. Wizards characterizes it as both mana generation and a payoff, giving the card an archetype-enabling function rather than merely adding efficiency to an existing deck. Its ranking reflects that strategic importance, but Storm’s narrow requirements make the wildcard decision highly personal.
9. Tempest Trapper
Tempest Trapper received a cost reduction and a body adjustment in the same Storm-focused rebalance. Like Charged Conjuration, it helps produce mana while contributing a payoff, so the two cards should be evaluated as a package when you are building Storm. Outside that strategy, the changes do not establish Tempest Trapper as a universal staple.

10. Polterheist
Polterheist rounds out the list because Wizards deliberately strengthened it after the Heist deck had receded. The larger body and revised ward payment were intended to make the card playable rather than weak. That is meaningful evidence of improved role performance, but it is not the same as proof that Heist is currently the format’s best deck, so craft it for that strategy rather than for general use.

Start with the deck you can play immediately, then account for where the card remains legal after February 2, 2027. The following decision order limits wasted rare and mythic wildcards:
- Choose an archetype first. White aggro points to Waystone’s Guidance; Kona, Storm, Bats, Izzet or Heist each require a more specific commitment.
- Craft the engine before the finisher. For example, Kona’s supporting pieces and the Izzet core determine whether the headline card can function consistently.
- Check your non-Alchemy plans. Digital-only Alchemy cards remain available in Historic, Timeless, Brawl and Competitive Brawl after the format’s retirement.
- Spend duplicate protection and boosters carefully. Alchemy acquisition is an Arena collection decision involving boosters, gems and wildcards, not a paper-card purchase.
- Recheck legality and metagame data before spending. Alchemy is still actively managed, and the October 2026 percentages are only a dated snapshot.
What does Alchemy’s retirement mean for these cards?
Wizards announced that Alchemy will be removed on February 2, 2027, with Alchemy: Reality Fracture as the final planned release. Retirement removes the dedicated format, not the cards from Arena: the digital-only cards continue to be legal in Historic, Timeless, Brawl and Competitive Brawl. That makes broadly useful cards such as Waystone’s Guidance more defensible long-term crafts than cards that function only inside a narrow, changing shell.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Alchemy cards in paper Magic?
No. Alchemy is an Arena format built around digital-only and rebalanced cards, so these cards do not represent ordinary paper releases. Acquisition is handled through Arena boosters, gems and wildcards.
What happens to my Alchemy cards when the format ends?
They stay in your Arena collection and remain legal in Historic, Timeless, Brawl and Competitive Brawl, subject to those formats’ own rules and future changes. The announcement removes Alchemy as a standalone format on February 2, 2027.
