2. Script Hook V — best foundation for script mods
Script Hook V provides a scripting framework and ASI loader used by many GTA V script mods. It is an enabling component, not a standalone gameplay overhaul, but it is a common starting point when a mod’s instructions require it. Confirm current game-build support on the Script Hook V page.

Check edition-specific loader requirements and the author’s anti-cheat guidance; avoid using Story Mode mod files in GTA Online.

OpenIV is an archive editor and mods-folder workflow associated with Legacy modding. It is a setup utility, not a player-facing mod by itself. Enhanced has a different archive-modification context, so do not follow a Legacy OpenIV guide as if it automatically applies to Enhanced.

12. OpenRPF — best archive-loader option for Enhanced
OpenRPF is an Enhanced mods-folder option. Its creator warns that Legacy-format files can crash Enhanced unless converted to compatible formats. Use the OpenRPF page to check its current instructions and supported formats; never drop a Legacy download into Enhanced on the assumption that the file structure is interchangeable.
13. Gameconfig for Legacy & Enhanced — useful for content-heavy setups
Gameconfig is a configuration choice for setups that add content, rather than a necessary first install for every player. The guide lists separate files for Legacy and Enhanced. Use the file intended for your edition and follow its dependencies; a mismatched configuration can undermine an otherwise compatible setup.

What to install first
There is no single universal mod stack. A visual-only change, a trainer, and a plugin-based police setup have different requirements. Follow the target mod’s own installation notes and add only the infrastructure it names.
- Identify your edition and build. Confirm whether your PC installation is GTA V Legacy or Enhanced and note its current game build.
- Open the mod’s current creator page. Verify that it supports your edition and build, then read its stated restrictions and dependencies.
- Choose the right file workflow. OpenIV is associated with Legacy archive modification; OpenRPF is an Enhanced mods-folder option. Do not mix Legacy-format assets into Enhanced without the conversion the creator requires.
- Install only named frameworks. Script Hook V, Script Hook V .NET Enhanced and RAGE Plugin Hook serve different requirements. Do not assume one substitutes for another.
- Add mods in a controlled order. Follow each author’s instructions, especially for gameconfig and mods that add content. Keep track of what you changed so you can isolate a conflict.
- Recheck after a title update. A game update can leave frameworks or file overlays needing updates. Check framework and mod pages again before troubleshooting the mod as if nothing changed.
Do GTA V mods work on Enhanced?
Some do, but compatibility is not automatic. Legacy and Enhanced are treated as separate executables, and a mod that works with one edition may not work with the other. OpenRPF’s page specifically warns that Legacy-format files can crash Enhanced unless converted. Check the author’s page for your exact edition, build and any conversion instructions before installation.
Why mods stop working after an update
Frameworks and file overlays can need corresponding updates when GTA V changes. LCPDFR’s guidance on modding after a title update notes that Script Hook V and RAGE Plugin Hook are common dependencies affected by game updates, and tools may need to update before dependent mods work again. Check the framework’s current status and the mod’s requirements before reinstalling or changing files.
Keep Story Mode mods out of GTA Online
This list is for PC Story Mode. Some mod pages explicitly limit a mod to single-player, and framework or anti-cheat guidance may differ by tool. Follow each creator’s warnings and do not use Story Mode mods in GTA Online. A mod being downloadable or described as a trainer does not establish that it is safe or supported for online play.
