There is no single best base location in Enshrouded. Choose a waterfront ruin, waterfall, frozen lake, or tropical basin if the view and building project matter most; choose a tower, central hub, high plateau, or travel-gap site if shorter journeys and resource access matter more. Your character’s progression, the size of the planned settlement, and your tolerance for enemies, Shroud, uneven terrain, and flooding should decide where the Flame Altar goes.
The most flexible choices are Harvest Homestead or Braelyn Bridge lakeside early on, Blue Goblet Tavern or Shorewatch in the mid-game, and Bittermelt Lake, Rothstep, or Fish Farm after you can handle tougher regions. Before committing, inspect the exact footprint: an altar cannot be moved without losing its upgrades.

Where should I build my first base?
For a first practical base, use Longkeep’s plains or Harvest Homestead. Longkeep is close to the opening route, has low threat, and includes a ruin slab, well, shelter, fireplace, and bed. Because the nearby Cinder Vault already provides fast travel, treat Longkeep as a temporary hub rather than spending a valuable upgraded altar there.
Longkeep: safest temporary start
- Best for: the first hours and players learning construction.
- Advantages: low-threat plains, basic shelter, and proximity to the opening route.
- Limitation: the existing Cinder Vault reduces the need for a permanent altar.
Harvest Homestead: early farm and home
Harvest Homestead is the stronger early permanent option. It has a furnished farmhouse, a second cottage, a cellar, prepared soil beds, and corn fields. A level 1 altar can cover the house; later upgrades can extend coverage toward the fields and Woodgard. It gives a new character a usable home and farming infrastructure without requiring a major restoration project.

Braelyn Bridge lakeside: early scenery with room to grow
Braelyn Bridge combines level ground, a pond, an island, and ruins. It suits a settlement that begins modestly and expands as the altar grows, while avoiding the extreme terrain work required by a mountain lake or giant waterfall town.
What is the best base location in Enshrouded?
The best location depends on the job you want the base to perform. Form-first builders should start with a view; function-first players should start with travel routes, elevation, and resources. Where is the best scenic or waterfront base?
Waterfront sites reward players who want the base itself to be the destination. They also demand more scouting: patrols, dark foliage, sloped ground, frozen terrain, and flooding can turn a beautiful plot into a difficult workshop.
Pondside ruins west of Fort Kelvin
This island-and-pier ruin makes a natural settlement center and is a standout picturesque choice. Scout the adjacent path first because enemy patrols can pass through the area.

Glenwood’s End waterfall
The neighboring waterfall in Revelwood includes a secret alcove that creates a strong fantasy backdrop. Dense foliage can make the site feel dark, so plan lighting and sightlines before laying out a large town.

Bittermelt Lake
In the Albaneve Summits, a partly frozen lake and frozen waterfall sit among snowy mountains. It is an endgame choice: difficult terrain and local threats assume late-game equipment and a willingness to build around the landscape.
Riverreach, Driftwood Wake, and Fish Farm
Riverreach is a monumental restoration: a huge town spans the area’s largest waterfall and includes working waterwheels and underground cells. Driftwood Wake is smaller, closer to the water, and better for fishing access. Fish Farm is an expert-tier pre-built base with several fishing pools, furnished rooms, and broad Veilwater Basin views.
Which base is best for fast travel and resources?
Function-first sites reduce the time spent crossing Shroud, climbing, or reaching a thinly covered region. They may look less dramatic than a waterfall, but the saved travel compounds over every crafting and gathering session.

Shorewatch and the Pillars of Creation
Shorewatch is a manageable Kindlewastes town with a tower that can be extended for longer glider jumps. Clear enemies before placing the altar. At the Pillars of Creation, the northern pillar is easier to build on; the southern pillar is closer to copper mines but contains an Engine Chambers structure. Both offer high-elevation launches toward southern Embervale.

The Mistbury Catacombs area sits in central grassland near Flame Shrines, Flame Sanctums, clay, scrap, and cloth, with a route toward the Pillars of Creation. A base south of Pikemead’s Reach sits on the safer side of a large Shroud wall and puts copper, hardwood, amber, shrines, and sanctums within reach.
Nomad Highlands plateau
Use the flattest part for the main hub and the edges for lookout posts. Its elevation links routes south to Springlands and west to Revelwood, while the slopes support gliding down to lower ground.
How does the Flame Altar change the decision?
The altar is the hard boundary for every build and the fast-travel point you will live with afterward. It cannot normally be placed inside the Shroud, needs reasonably level ground without obstacles, and stops the Construction Hammer outside its boundary.

Terrain changes outside a base can disappear after 30 minutes or a restart. Altars cannot be moved; extinguishing and replacing one loses its size upgrades. The world initially allows two altars. Current 1.0 guides report 15 before the final progression step and 16 at Flame level 11, which also enables Shroud removal or repulsion. Exact legacy values and recipe costs remain subject to change.
Every altar is also a fast-travel destination and provides Flame upgrades and skill resets. Avoid placing one directly beside an Ancient Spire unless duplicating that travel point is part of the design. Enshrouded has no base raids that damage buildings, but enemies can enter and attack you.
How should I choose between a view and a stronghold?
- Mark the purpose: decide whether the base is a home, farm, restoration, travel hub, or resource depot.
- Measure the footprint: stand on the proposed altar site and account for the current 40 m cube, future expansions, water, slopes, and existing walls.
- Scout threats: watch patrol routes, Shroud boundaries, and enemy entrances before committing.
- Check travel redundancy: compare nearby Ancient Spires, Cinder Vaults, and other fast-travel points.
- Test the approach: make sure the route supports hauling resources, gliding, and emergency exits.
- Place only when satisfied: the altar’s upgrades and location are effectively permanent.
For a balanced choice, Blue Goblet Tavern combines a furnished three-story shell, balconies, a hidden basement route, a nearby pond, mine, ore, and clay. Shorewatch balances a ready-made town with high-ground travel. Braelyn Bridge balances a pond and island with workable terrain. Rothstep balances a fishing pond and cave with an unusually broad late-game mineral list.

Map-data counts can help compare regional density but do not prove gathering yields or whether an altar fits. For example, Pindrop reports 356 plant placements near a Nomad Highlands Ancient Spire, 62 mining containers near an Albaneve Summits teleport platform, 52 near a Veilwater Basin platform, and 59 near a Cinder’s Cradle platform. Treat these as map counts and inspect the actual slope, water, view, and footprint in-game.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can enemies destroy my Enshrouded base while I am away?
There are no base raids that damage buildings. Enemies can still enter the settlement and attack your character, so entrances, patrol routes, and defensive sightlines remain important.
Can I move a Flame Altar after placing it?
No. Extinguishing and replacing an altar discards its size upgrades, so test the ground, travel route, and planned footprint before lighting it.
Is a lake base good for farming in Enshrouded?
Water can support farming, fishing, and stamina-related convenience. Flooding can also stop crafting stations and unsettle bed assignments, so keep critical rooms above the waterline.
