The catch is that “free” usually means free-to-play, not completely free of monetization. Battle passes, cosmetic stores, paid expansions, gacha pulls, card packs, and convenience purchases are common.
This is a historical guide to the PC landscape of 2022. Every recommendation below could be started without buying the base game, but the amount of free content, account requirements, learning curve, and monetization model vary considerably.

The best free PC games of 2022
1. Apex Legends
Best for: Fast, squad-based battle royale with strong movement and low-pressure team communication.
Apex Legends combines responsive gunplay, distinctive playable characters, tactical squad decisions, and a useful ping system. The ping system is particularly valuable for players who do not want to use voice chat constantly. Its characters give teams different abilities without replacing the importance of aim, positioning, and movement.

- 【Professional Gaming Keyboard】The 104-key full-size keyboard has a standard layout with F-keys (function keys) and a numeric keypad, and 26 Anti-Ghosting keys allow you to press multiple keys simultaneously. The quality of the built-in steel plate of the keyboard is very strong and durable.
- 【Professional gaming mouse】The mouse uses high-precision optical sensor, sensitivity is 7200DPI, 12000fps scan rate, 1000Hz tour detection rate, can withstand 40G acceleration and 400IPS tracking speed, can meet your fast browsing and game requirements.
- 【Upgraded RGB Lighting Gaming Combo】All the keys of the keyboard, the light bar on the bottom side of the keyboard, and the RGB lights on the side of the mouse will glow. Your fingertips dance on the designed floating keycaps and click on the hyper-responsive mouse, accompanied by rainbow-like RGB lighting, allowing you to instantly enter the cool game state.
- 【Perfect Ergonomic Computer Game Combo】The adjustable tripod keyboard makes your keys easier. The anti-slip material mouse that is more suitable for the hand can reduce your hand fatigue.Soft leather wrist rest made from smooth faux leather and memory foam for extra relaxation while gaming.
- 【High-quality Game Combination】The curved ABS keycaps are exquisite in workmanship, the built-in steel plate of the keyboard base is sturdy and resistant to falling, the non-slip ABS material mouse has a better grip, and the soft leather wrist-rest filled with memory foam is more textured. High quality allows you to choose worry-free.
It is a strong starting point for competitive free-to-play games, although “accessible” does not mean easy. Battle royale matches can be punishing for newcomers, the mechanical skill ceiling is high, and solo queueing can be frustrating when teammates have different objectives.
Monetization: Seasonal content, battle-pass progression, cosmetics, and character unlocks are part of the live-service structure. It is not a self-contained offline shooter.
2. Fortnite
Best for: The broadest mix of battle royale, social play, creative modes, and live events.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFortnite’s traditional 2022 identity centered on building, shooting, and surviving against other players, while its expanding mode lineup made it useful for players who wanted more than standard battle royale matches. It is also one of the easiest recommendations for groups because its social features and broad audience make it a natural meeting place.
The trade-off is constant change. The item shop, battle pass, events, modes, and overall structure can feel overwhelming, and players seeking a straightforward competitive shooter may prefer Apex Legends or Valorant.
Monetization: The competitive foundation is free to start, while cosmetics and battle-pass content dominate the store.
3. Destiny 2
Best for: Polished first-person shooting across PvE activities, PvP, and a persistent science-fiction setting.
Destiny 2’s New Light experience gave free players a substantial introduction, including access to activities such as Strikes, Crucible, and Gambit. Its shooting, weapons, classes, and cooperative activities made it one of the most satisfying free starting points for players who wanted an MMO-like game without committing to a traditional subscription.
However, the free version is not the complete Destiny 2 ecosystem. Major expansions, seasonal content, and some other activities are paid, and the changing story can be difficult to follow. It is also online-first rather than an offline campaign.
Monetization: The base game is free to begin, but expansions and add-on content eventually become important for players who want the full experience.
4. Warframe
Best for: Fast PvE combat, collecting equipment, crafting, and long-term progression.
Warframe remains one of the strongest free choices for players who prefer cooperative or solo PvE over competitive matchmaking. Its distinctive third-person movement, large selection of warframes and weapons, and steady progression loop provide an enormous amount to do.
The opening is its biggest weakness. New players can struggle to understand the progression order, crafting economy, missions, and story. The game also asks players to accept substantial farming and repeated activities as part of its normal rhythm.

The ergonomic design of this gaming keyboard makes you feel comfortable while typing and gaming!
Monetization: Optional purchases can reduce waiting and grinding. They do not turn the game into a conventional paid campaign, but they can change how quickly progression feels.
5. Path of Exile
Best for: Players who want a dark-fantasy action RPG with unusually deep builds and endgame systems.
Path of Exile offers extensive character customization through its skill tree, skills, equipment, leagues, and endgame. It is a long-term hobby rather than a quick casual game, and its depth gives it exceptional replay value.
That depth is also the barrier to entry. The interface and progression systems are not especially self-explanatory, and many new players use build guides to avoid making an ineffective character. Choose it if experimentation and complexity sound appealing, not if you want a simple dungeon crawler.
Monetization: The core action RPG is free to start, with optional purchases supporting the long-term experience.
6. League of Legends
Best for: Players seeking a major competitive MOBA with a large champion roster and extensive long-term depth.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →League of Legends is easier to recommend than Dota 2 only in a relative sense: it is still difficult, team-dependent, and demanding. Its huge roster, competitive ecosystem, and map knowledge offer years of learning, while each match provides a clear strategic problem to solve.
New players should expect a significant knowledge burden. Champion abilities, items, objectives, matchups, and team behavior all matter, and frustration or toxicity can be part of the experience.
Monetization: Players can start free, but champion access, cosmetics, and collection choices form a substantial part of the surrounding economy.
7. Dota 2
Best for: Players who want maximum strategic depth in a MOBA.

Dota 2’s enormous hero roster, item interactions, map systems, and team compositions create an exceptionally deep competitive game. It rewards players who enjoy studying interactions and improving over a long period.
It is one of the least beginner-friendly recommendations here. Matches can be long, mistakes can have lasting consequences, and communication and game knowledge matter greatly. League of Legends is the more approachable alternative, but neither game is truly casual when played competitively.
Monetization: The game is free to start through Steam, with monetization centered largely around optional content and cosmetics.

8. Valorant
Best for: Players who prefer precise, round-based tactical shooting with character abilities.
Recommended Free Tools
Valorant sits between a traditional tactical shooter and a hero game. Teams attack and defend sites, rounds are valuable, and accurate aim matters, but agents introduce abilities that shape how teams take space and gather information.
It is a better choice than Apex Legends for players who prefer slower, deliberate rounds and coordinated site attacks. It is a worse choice for anyone who dislikes ability systems, high-stakes matchmaking, or team-dependent play.
Monetization: Cosmetics and battle-pass systems are central to the commercial model; the competitive game is free to start.
Launcher: A Riot account and Riot’s PC client are required.
9. Genshin Impact
Best for: Players who want a large open world, character-switching combat, exploration, and frequent content updates.
Genshin Impact offers a substantial free opening, attractive presentation, elemental combat, and a world designed around exploration. It is the most obvious choice here for someone who wants an open-world action RPG rather than a competitive multiplayer game.
Its free-to-play model needs an explicit warning. Characters and weapons are acquired through gacha mechanics, so “free” does not mean monetization-neutral. It is a poor fit for readers who want a traditional one-time-purchase RPG or who prefer to avoid randomized acquisition systems.
Monetization: Gacha pulls, premium currency, and optional spending can influence how quickly players obtain characters and equipment. Spending should not be treated as necessary for enjoying the opening, but the system is prominent.

Best for: Players who want a conventional MMO without a mandatory monthly subscription to begin.
Guild Wars 2 provides a persistent world, exploration, professions, group events, and a large established community. The core free experience is substantial enough to serve as a genuine introduction to the MMO rather than a short trial.
Free accounts have restrictions compared with paid accounts, and the expansions are not included. It is best suited to players who enjoy long-term online progression and do not need a self-contained campaign.
Monetization: The core account is free to begin; expansions and additional content cost extra.

11. Dauntless
Best for: Cooperative monster hunting with a lighter and more approachable presentation than Monster Hunter.
Dauntless revolves around a clear loop: hunt a large creature, collect materials, craft better equipment, and take on stronger hunts. It is a useful recommendation for groups that want cooperative PvE without entering a competitive shooter or MMO.
Experienced hunters may find it less mechanically rich than Monster Hunter, while everyone should expect repetition and grinding. Live-service balance and available content can also change over time.
Monetization: Optional cosmetics and progression-related systems surround the free hunt-craft-upgrade loop.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Best for: Short team-shooter matches built around heroes and distinct roles.
Overwatch 2 became free-to-play on October 4, 2022, making it a late-2022 recommendation rather than a game that had been free throughout the entire year. Its role-based heroes and varied abilities create a different rhythm from Valorant or Apex Legends.
Team composition, role balance, hero changes, and battle-pass progression can all affect the experience. Players who liked the original paid model may also need time to adjust to the free-to-play structure.
Launcher: Blizzard’s Battle.net ecosystem is relevant for the PC version.

13. Rocket League
Best for: Pick-up-and-play competitive sports with a very high mechanical ceiling.
Rocket League’s premise is immediately understandable: drive rocket-powered cars and hit a ball into the opposing goal. The basic rules are simple, but aerial control, positioning, rotations, and timing give the game remarkable depth.
It works well for quick sessions and groups, though beginners should not confuse a simple premise with easy mastery. Competitive improvement takes practice.
Monetization: The game is free to start, with optional cosmetic and seasonal content.
14. Gwent
Best for: Players who want a more deliberate digital card game with tactical decision-making.

Gwent is a strong option for readers who prefer planning, deck construction, and managing several rounds rather than real-time combat. Its appeal is less about reflexes and more about reading an opponent and deciding when to commit resources.
Monetization: Collection-building and card acquisition are central considerations for any free digital card game. Players should expect a progression economy rather than a one-time complete card set.
15. Hearthstone
Best for: A polished, accessible digital card game with a large established audience.
Hearthstone is easier to understand at a glance than many strategy games, but building competitive collections can require time or spending. It is a good fit for players who want short matches and a familiar fantasy presentation, provided they are comfortable with card-pack monetization.
Monetization: Card packs and collection progression are the important caveats. The game is free to download, but competitive access to a broad card pool is not equivalent to owning a complete traditional card game.

- Smite: A third-person MOBA with mythology-based characters, useful for players who want a different perspective from League of Legends or Dota 2. Official site
- Team Fortress 2: A classic team shooter that remained available in 2022, though its age and server, bot, and spam issues deserve consideration. Official site
- Planetside 2: A niche but distinctive choice for enormous battles rather than conventional small-team matches. Official site
- Splitgate: A distinctive 2022-era shooter combining arena combat with portals. Its long-term population should not be assumed from its novelty alone. Official site
- Heroes of the Storm: A streamlined Blizzard MOBA worth considering if you prefer shorter, team-focused matches.
- Pokémon TCG Online: A historical 2022 recommendation only. It was later replaced by Pokémon Trading Card Game Live, so it should not be treated as a current download suggestion.
What “free-to-play” really means
Free to start is not the same as complete
Free-to-play means there is no upfront purchase required to begin. It does not promise that every expansion, character, cosmetic, card, campaign, or endgame activity is included. Destiny 2 and Guild Wars 2 are especially important examples: their free starting packages are substantial, but paid expansions eventually matter for players who want the complete ecosystem.
Different kinds of monetization
- Cosmetic stores: Purchases change appearance rather than directly changing combat power. Fortnite and Valorant are easier recommendations for players who want this model, although stores and battle passes still create spending pressure.
- Battle passes: Seasonal tracks provide time-limited rewards and can encourage regular play. They are optional, but missing a season may mean missing its progression window.
- Gacha: Genshin Impact uses randomized character and weapon acquisition. This is materially different from buying a fixed cosmetic.
- Card packs: Hearthstone and Gwent use collection systems. A free player can begin playing, but building a broad competitive collection takes time and may involve spending.
- Convenience purchases: Warframe can let players spend money to reduce waiting or grinding. That is not the same as directly buying combat victory, but it changes the perceived value of progression.
- Paid expansions: Destiny 2 and Guild Wars 2 demonstrate why “free MMO” often means free core access rather than every current feature.
Do not assume that every free game is pay-to-win, and do not assume that every game without direct combat purchases is equally pressure-free. The relevant question is what money changes: appearance, access, collection speed, grind, or competitive capability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPractical considerations before downloading
Launchers and accounts
Steam is relevant for games such as Dota 2 and Destiny 2, while Riot’s client is required for League of Legends and Valorant. Fortnite is associated with Epic Games, Apex Legends with EA’s account ecosystem, and Blizzard games such as Overwatch 2 and Hearthstone with Battle.net. Publisher account and launcher policies can change, so check the official game page before installing.
Internet and offline play
Nearly all of these recommendations are online-first. Competitive matches, MMO worlds, live-service progression, and many PvE activities require an internet connection and an account. None should be selected if your priority is a fully offline RPG.
Hardware and storage
Live-service games frequently grow through updates, so exact installation sizes become outdated quickly. As a broad guide, League of Legends, Dota 2, Valorant, and older games tend to be lighter than Destiny 2, Warzone, Fortnite, or Genshin Impact, which can be heavier or receive frequent large updates. Check the official requirements for the specific version and date you intend to install.
Solo players and voice chat
Warframe, Path of Exile, and Genshin Impact are the clearest solo-friendly choices. Destiny 2 offers strong PvE but has activities designed around groups. Apex Legends, Overwatch 2, League of Legends, Dota 2, Valorant, and Rocket League can be played without constant voice chat, but their designs still depend heavily on teammates and coordination. Apex’s ping system makes it particularly workable for players who prefer not to speak.
Recommended Free Tools
Children and younger players
Free games can include in-game purchases, voice and text chat, user-generated content, social features, randomized acquisition systems, and strong competitive pressure. Use platform and publisher account controls, review spending permissions, and do not assume that “free” means suitable for every age.
What changed after 2022?
Counter-Strike changed names and status for modern readers. CS:GO was the relevant Counter-Strike recommendation in 2022, but Valve released Counter-Strike 2 on September 27, 2023, replacing CS:GO as the current standalone Steam product. Read the 2022 recommendation as historical and direct modern players to Counter-Strike 2.
Pokémon TCG Online should not be presented as current. It was included in historical 2022 coverage but was later replaced by Pokémon Trading Card Game Live.
Live-service games are moving targets. Content availability, monetization, launchers, system requirements, progression, and player populations can change after publication. The recommendations above describe the 2022 PC landscape and should not be read as a guarantee that every system remains identical today.
Bottom line
For most players, start with Apex Legends for competitive shooting, Fortnite for broad social play, Warframe for free PvE progression, or Guild Wars 2 for a traditional MMO. Choose Path of Exile or Dota 2 only if you welcome a steep learning curve, and approach Genshin Impact, Hearthstone, and other collection-driven games with a clear understanding of their monetization.
